After looking around on the class it self, my GM brought up that Artificers cant make items with feats in them... This didnt sound right to me. Can someone give me a reference about this? I thought this information incorrect. 4th paragraph page 32 I do believe is where his argument comes from. I could have sworn that you could out of hand, but no use this ability to say make a ring without forge ring (magical ring of course). Anyone?

An artificer needs Forge Ring to make a magic ring. I don't think that was your question, but just to make sure.

As for an item that requires a specific feat for creation beyond an item creation feat (like Metamagic Rods), the Artificer still needs the feat in question. For an Enlarge Metamagic Rod, the Artificer still needs Enlarge Spell. His ability to fake spell requirements does not extend to feats.

Your DM is correct. An Artificer cannot make any item with feat prereqs via the use of their Use Magic Device check, because you cannot fake having a specific feat with UMD. This is mainly due to the fact that you could then fake having the creation feats, which would just totally screw everything up.

So, you still need to actually have taken the feats in question before you can make items that require it. However, honestly, I cannot think of a single item off the top of my head that requires a feat prereq other than the appropriate crafting feat.

Are there even any items that require, say, Power Attack to make?
Closest I could think of would be to make a scroll or wand of a spell with a metamagic feat already applied to it, in which case yes, you would still need to have taken the appropriate metamagic feat.

One might be willing to consider a house rule of adopting one of the uses for Action Points from UA, specifically allow the use of an action point (or two) to emulate a feat (http://www.d20srd.org/srd/variant/adventuring/actionPoints.htm#emulateFeat).

It's a stretch, but some DMs are more lenient than others.

In addition, I'd make so that all it gets you is the ability to roll the check to emulate a feat, it doesn't automatically let you do it. So, spend an AP to make an additional check, which if you fail you've wasted an AP, and since you can't spend more than one AP on a single thing at once, you couldn't use your AP to boost that check.

Would make crafting those items potentially very expensive, in terms of resources used, but doable.

yeah. some items need things like jump ranks or mobilty and such... I figured you could add and/or emulate those, but you could do things like emulate item creation feats and such. But I guess I was wrong on that. Thanks for the info. ;)
