But anyway, there is no WotC class called the Artifex. I don't know where you saw the name, but its either completely homebrew, or it was published by a third party publisher.

Description:
This man stands at roughly six foot. His body is covered by thick layers of metal armor. A massive shield rests in one of his hands, switched from time to time depending on which arm he uses. His helmet is silver-white and bears a pair of blue gems for eyes. Each of his arms is made of black metal, plated on the backs. One has an opening below one of the plates and the other has a curved blade that extends from around the area of the wrist. He carries many items over his body, and is an imposing figure with all the equipment he bears.

10-31-07, 05:03 PM Feat-wise, no he's not broken. A plain L15 Artificer would have a few more feats.

Skill-wise, well, someone doesn't realize that bonuses to Int from Items does not provide skill points. So, yes, he's got a ton more skill points than he should.

Cash-wise, he's got far too much in gear, unless the rest of his party is epic. 1mill in GP in the bank at L15? What the player might have done is turned XP into cash. He builds magic items to order, gets paid full value, then turns that around to make more items to order, making 25GP/xp. If the rest of the party hit L20, this guy blew 70000xp to make items, which comes out at 1750000 without counting the Artisan feats or lab effects taht might reduce XP costs. So, yes, it is possible for a character to wind up like that legally.

So, yeah, the only really busted bit is the Skill Points.

11-01-07, 10:11 AM Wherever it came from, much of it can be reverse engineered from the post above.

Over 10 levels, he only gained three feats from the class itself: an artificer would have gotten all of those and more.

HP = 136. +5 Con bonus, so subtract 75 and 6 for Artificer 1. That's 55HP over 15 levels. Subtract 3.5x4 for the remaining 4 Artificer levels and that's 41 over 10 Artifex levels. That's either an above average D6 or below average D8.

Saves and BAB are consistent with the Artificer's tables.

He's got special abilities I don't recognize...

* Reserve Boost
* Forge Master
* Spell Battery
* Craft Mastery
* Slow 3/day

but over the same 10 levels, the Artificer would receive Metamagic Spell trigger, 2 Bonus Feats, Metamagic Spell Completion, and Skill Mastery.

The Artifex comes in woefully deficient on the Infusion front.

Without knowledge of the specifics of the special abilities, I can't make a complete determination of balance, but that solid hit on Infusions makes me think the class can't be very broken.

His body is covered by thick layers of metal armor. A massive shield rests in one of his hands, switched from time to time depending on which arm he uses. His helmet is silver-white and bears a pair of blue gems for eyes. Each of his arms is made of black metal, plated on the backs. One has an opening below one of the plates and the other has a curved blade that extends from around the area of the wrist. He carries many items over his body, and is an imposing figure with all the equipment he bears.

Kreistor2 10-31-07, 05:03 PM	Feat-wise, no he's not broken. A plain L15 Artificer would have a few more feats. Skill-wise, well, someone doesn't realize that bonuses to Int from Items does not provide skill points. So, yes, he's got a ton more skill points than he should. Cash-wise, he's got far too much in gear, unless the rest of his party is epic. 1mill in GP in the bank at L15? What the player might have done is turned XP into cash. He builds magic items to order, gets paid full value, then turns that around to make more items to order, making 25GP/xp. If the rest of the party hit L20, this guy blew 70000xp to make items, which comes out at 1750000 without counting the Artisan feats or lab effects taht might reduce XP costs. So, yes, it is possible for a character to wind up like that legally. So, yeah, the only really busted bit is the Skill Points.

Over 10 levels, he only gained three feats from the class itself: an artificer would have gotten all of those and more. HP = 136. +5 Con bonus, so subtract 75 and 6 for Artificer 1. That's 55HP over 15 levels. Subtract 3.5x4 for the remaining 4 Artificer levels and that's 41 over 10 Artifex levels. That's either an above average D6 or below average D8. Saves and BAB are consistent with the Artificer's tables. He's got special abilities I don't recognize... * Studied Crafter * Salvage Parts * Forge Adept * Reserve Boost * Forge Master * Spell Battery * Craft Mastery * Slow 3/day but over the same 10 levels, the Artificer would receive Metamagic Spell trigger, 2 Bonus Feats, Metamagic Spell Completion, and Skill Mastery. The Artifex comes in woefully deficient on the Infusion front. * 1st Level: 6/day * 2nd Level: 6/day * 3rd Level: 6/day * 4th Level: 4/day vs * 1st Level: 7/day * 2nd Level: 7/day * 3rd Level: 6/day * 4th Level: 5/day * 5th Level: 5/day * 6th Level: 4/day 288 Skill points. (5+Int)x(5+3)=72 from Artificer. 216 from 10 levels of Artifex, then. 21.6/level from Artifex? the player made a mistake by adding Skill Points from items, so I can't determine how many SP/level the class gets. Without knowledge of the specifics of the special abilities, I can't make a complete determination of balance, but that solid hit on Infusions makes me think the class can't be very broken.
