| andrewknaut06-21-07, 12:49 AM | so I'm pretty sure you have to meet the prerequisites of the bonus feats that you could pick, such as extra rings. ya its a pretty noob question, but it doesn’t say anything so i thought i should double check. |
| andrewknaut06-21-07, 12:58 AM | sorry, i also have one more questoin it says that the artisan feats stack with themselves...so dose that mean if you take 4 of one of them you reduce the cost of xp, gold or time by 100%? thanks a lot for the time |

Since it doesn't actually say in the book we have to fall back on common sense. If you did not have to meet the pre-requisites for your bonus feats you could take a feat like extra rings at level 4 when it's clearly restricted to level 12 (and the ability to forge rings) for balance. Since the artificer and the bonus feats are so clearly linked I imagine KB would have mentioned something like you must be level 12 to take Extra Rings or choose it as a bonus feat for an artificer. So I'd say yes you must meet the pre-reqs just like a fighter and his bonus feats for the same reason. |

Two it was specifically adressed and fixed in the errata which can be found here. http://www.wizards.com/default.asp?x=dnd/er/20040125a And three even if you could take it multiple times since each time it affects the base cost it would not give you 100% free it would give you 25% of 100% of the base cost and with the second feat 25% of 75%(since with the first feat that's your new base cost in gold, xp or time see?) of the base cost etc. |
| andrewknaut06-21-07, 10:56 AM | alright thanks ya that seemed a bit broken as well im wondering if theirs an easy way to create an artificer at higher then level 1, due to his xp reserve and feats that give him cheaper item creations. Hes going to be level 4 and im giving him one of the craft feats at 3 and an other at 4, so should i go level by level, or just say that the gold he has at level 4 and the cost of his items are all restricted, but i don't have the xp reserves. thanks again |
| Shady31406-24-07, 04:15 AM | as well im wondering if theirs an easy way to create an artificer at higher then level 1, due to his xp reserve and feats that give him cheaper item creations. I'm not aware of one. There are character creators but I don't think any do anything with magical equipment especially when it comes to cost or taking craft reserves or the feats into account. Hes going to be level 4 and im giving him one of the craft feats at 3 and an other at 4, so should i go level by level, or just say that the gold he has at level 4 and the cost of his items are all restricted, but i don't have the xp reserves.thanks again Well if your DM is nice then yes you will just have to go level by level. Of course this is assuming your DM finds it reasonable for your artificer to have made it to level 4 spending gold and craft xp making items but never using any of those said items(it's kind of assumed you're going to consume those consumables) or selling them. I think most DMs (or maybe I just think most because this is what I would do for simplicity's sake) would just have you look at what you could create at level 4 (or perhaps level 3, in which case you'd see what you could have made at level 3 then start with everything in place at level 4 with full craft xp etc. It'd depend on the length of the adventure/campaign.), including your craft reserve and with your feats in place and let you start with whatever you decide to make. You could probably negotiate a bit. Maybe argue for a little extra gold from selling previous potions and scrolls etc. If YOU'RE the DM well then it's up to you. What will make it easier in the future is if you go level by level this time and see what an artificer would probably make. Record all that, save it, and then in the future you can have some idea what most artificers will probably have at lower levels since the useful stuff is probably going to be just as useful to other artificers. |

That is completely unnecessary since artificers gain those feats automatically. Also (you may already know this but your wording is unclear), you can't get an item creation feat with your bonus feats. Anyways, as for creating a level four character, I would go one level at a time to determine how much of your craft reserve you're using, since leftover reserve doesn't carry over to the next level. Your DM might make you roll UMD checks, though, just as if you were creating the item in game. Either way, you'll be paying half price for magic items, and it'll be worth it. |

I'm currently playing an 11th level Cleric who has crafted all of his own magical items, and a good portion of his party's magical items (custom weapons and stat enhancers mostly), and has never spent a single gold piece on a consumable. No scrolls or potions. I just recently bought 2 wands of Cure Light Wounds for 750 gp each, just so I would never have to bother casting another Cure spell. Having a character who doesn't craft or use consumables isn't entirely unreasonable. In fact, I'm in the same predicament as the OP. I'm going to replace my Cleric with a Warforged Artificer (got bored of the original), and am considering just going level-by-level, and using the "PC Wealth" table in the DMG to use up crafting reserve and gold. (Our campaign is treasure-heavy, so the PC Wealth table is conservative in comparison) |

You're a cleric not an artificer and you're at level 11 not 4. I'm also not sure what that has to do with what I said? A cleric doesn't need to make potions of CLW or whatever seeing as you can cast the spell. An artificer can only cast repair infusions. Unless it's an all warforged party or he's totally synergized with the party cleric a few potions of cure are generally a good idea. EDIT: FYI Wands are consumables. Unless you meant an eternal wand in which case that price would be ridiculous. And saying pick up a couple of wands is not much help to a level 4 artificer. Having a character who doesn't craft Would be a terrible, terrible artificer. or use consumables isn't entirely unreasonable. A PC artificer that never makes a single potion or scroll is certainly possible but what exactly do you think the PC should be making at level 1-4 that won't mostly be consumables? At level 1 all an artificer can make is scrolls. At 2 all he can make is scrolls and potions. You do know I was talking about his level 4 artificer right? And really having a character that doesn't USE scrolls, potions or wands EVER wouldn't be unreasonable?... For an artificer? In fact, I'm in the same predicament as the OP. (Our campaign is treasure-heavy, so the PC Wealth table is conservative in comparison) As I said it's your DM's call. I just personally find it ridiculous for a PC to spend every gold piece and craft xp point for however many levels (at the lower levels) and then to assume you never used or sold a single potion or scroll you made that entire time? Keeping in mind you have to have spent a certain amount of time crafting at the bare minimum before you leveled again or you'd have lost your xp reserve. And why wouldn't you make them since you'll just lose your craft reserve? Plus would it really matter if you skipped a few levels? Does a lvl 11 artificer really need a scroll he made at 1st level? |
