Artificer Homunculi sizing? [Archive] - Wizards Community

09-13-07, 12:58 PM The Craft Homunculus ability as detailed in the Class description (ECS 32) only talks about the basic Homunculus as detailed in the MM. It mentions that if given more than 6 HD (the limit of its advancement in the MM) then the homunculus becomes a Small creature.

In the errata, it clarified that an artificer could create other types of homunculus. When applied to a variant Homunculus which has a base size other than Tiny, would gaining HD also increase their size?

For example, would an Iron Defender (base size Small) grow to Medium size when advanced beyond 6 HD (the limit of its listed advancement)?

09-18-07, 05:16 PM I do believe it states (either in the Core Eberron book under the Arty class, or perhaps in Magic of Eberron under the Imp. Homuc. feat) that a Homuc can never be larger than Small size, for any reason.
You do however gain feats for the extra HD just as with any creture I believe.

My current PC just created his first Iron Def (at 8th PC level lol) using Imp. Homc and burning GP to boost it to 6HD, added Flying and Flaming attack (per Imp Feat) and fluffed it to look like a Dragon. He now has a Small little metal flying dragon-wannabe that sets anything it fetchs on fire and can take a decent beating.

This would seem to imply that it was talking about the standard MM Homunculus, which starts at size Tiny.
Hence my question about the Variant homunculi that start at different sizes.

09-21-07, 10:02 PM If the Homuc starts at Tiny then yes it would advance to small, but if it's already small then it's already small so it has no change to size.

It isn't. Eberron views all kinds of homunculi (Iron Defender, Wright, Harrier, Messenger, the standard MM one and so on) as homunculi. The reference to the MM only says what happens when the beasty is enlarged (as can be read in MM page 291).

"No matter how many HD it has, a homunculus never grows larger than small" should be specific enough.
