my player and i disagree on how the artificer's item creation ability works. particularly, i want to know if a 3rd level artificer create a heward's handy haversack. i'm under the impression that he must wait till he's a 7th level artificer (CL + 2, and a DC 29 UMD check), but wanted to make sure i have it right.

thanks in advance...

you are correct.. leomund's secret chest is a lvl 5 wiz/sorc spell.. i believe he's confused thinking he can create any item with a spell less than or equal to his CL+2...

You are almost correct: While the artificer could create the spell on his own only at seventh level, he can also use a spell from a scroll. Of course, the drawback is that that scroll would cost 1250 gp and he needs to pay another 1000 for the haversack construction - so all in all, he'd pay 250 gp more than if he simply bought one. Oh, well...

Yeah assuming there are magical stores around where you can just go buy a haversack from. I always hated the concept of one stop magical item stores in any fantasy world. Also the odds that one such shop had exactly what you wanted seems highly unlikely at the least.

Unless of course Heward outsourced haversack construction to the far east, and is mass producing the bags now. :)

thanks...ya, he's under the impression that all he needs to make is the DC 29 UMD check for leomund's secret chest and can ignore the caster level requirement.

thanks for the answer, but can anyone else confirm? i need a few more "that is right" replies before i show this thread to him.

i'm totally not understanding why you would infer that. the example with the bottle of air from the item creation ability description is pretty clear to me that all he needs for the leomund's secret chest requirement is a DC 29 UMD check.

It's general consensus that an artificer can either emulate the spell himself (UMD 29, can be tried two levels before a full caster can cast the spell) or substitute that with a scroll.

While for expensive items I concur with you (I prefer a broker system), a HHH is pretty much the standard of extraplanar storage space. Your local Cannith store (assuming you are in a major town) will have a few in reserve, just as they will have some +1 longswords ready to be enchanted up to the customer's wishes.

I agree that it is 7th level that is needed, but make sure that the requirement is for the right reason.

It isn't because the item has a CL of 9. It is because the spell requirement is for a 9th level spell, which he can't attempt until he's 7th.

if he gets the spell from a scroll or has a 9th level wizard who knows the spell to cast it for him during the creation process, then the only requirement is that he has the Craft Wondrous Item feat. The CLs on items have been stated before to be only the CL of the standard item as you find it in a treasure trove, not a crafting requirement.

The spell's level is actually 5, though you usually need a 9th level caster (reduced by two for the artificer) to cast it. Right reasons, eh?

ok, cool, didn't know that...even though it is an expensive option.

thanks for the answers everyone.
