I'm playing in a campaign that allows any book you can bring to the DM and I'm making a back up character, Warforged Scout lvl.1. But I was recently told that a Warforged Artificer would be the way to go. I have no idea what an artificer does and I don't want to buy the Eberron core book only to find out that they suck. What is an Artificer and what can they do.

The artificer is 'the builder'. They specialize in making magic items; they can also serve as trapfinders.

As far as their 'quality', well, Artificers are regularly listed in 'top 5 class' polls, frequently right behind the Cleric and Druid.

Actually, some times before any of them. It is my firm belief (and not only my own) that a prepared artificer can overcome any challenge and any adversary. The trick is that, since you rely so heavily on magic items, being a 'prepared artificer takes a whole lot more forethought than for any other class.

This is true. A cleric or druid can swap their spells ever day. Your magic item collection takes more time to tweak.

not to mention that as a warforged, it is always nice to have the repair damage infusions in a pinch.

They trade the ability to quickly overcome a foe for flexibility. But where the Wizard only has to plan 1 day ahead, the Artificer has to plan weeks or months ahead.
