The warforged race is a pretty dynamic race due to the racial benifits you draw from it.

At first glance the -2 wis and cha may be a turn off. And indeed bards and other charisma based casters are probably not great choices, though the warlock isn't that bad off and meshes well with the always on aspect of being a warforged. Classes like cleric aren't hit too badly from the stat penalty, and make very solid melee style casters (clerics in adamantite body, druids in darkwood body). Also the new artiifcer class makes for VERY scary warforged.

Rogue style warforged also get the benifit of being totally immune to poison and disease (was that a poison trap I just failed my disable device on? meh whatever), never needing to sleep (24/7 on watch), and immunity to fatugue (i'll just hang from the celing here untill the guy I want to kill walks under me....9 hours later...)

But we can't ignore where warforged really shine, warriors - specifically fighters. I don't have much to say, other than look up the warforged juggernaut in the main eberron book.

I tend to favor making Warforges Artificers, Sorcerers, Barbarians, and Fighters.

i see what you mean with the warforged artificer, being able to heal itself, and how the barbarian never gets tired. they'd be pretty scary in battle

Even though warforged can be any class, some would take some pretty damn good explanations like a Warlock or other new but odd class. I liked the idea of Guile, the warforged ninja/cleric but man do his stats suck. :P

Well, an Idea I had about the Warlock is that the Warforged at one point was attempted to be possessed by a demon, and it almost succeeded, but the magic that controls the living part of the construct rebelled, so the demon is trapped in a quasi-real state inside the Warforged... which allows the warforged to have the Warlock powers.

I don't know if you really would want to do that in a game, but it's a neat idea for a single character.

Of course, you could just explain it away as the Warforged was build to be a blasting support unit, but that would be... I dunno... to star wars-esque
AkumaDaimyo

06-14-07, 09:08 PM
Doesn't work for blasting support unit. Warlocks get their power from infernal or fey. Blasting support unit would be a sorceror or wizard with emphasis on attack spells. Though that negative to CHA hurts their sorceror main stat. However Warlocks also need CHA to determine DC for saves vs their powers.

Warforged Ranger that focuses on archery, and don't forget to pick up the attachment that functions as a crossbow I think it is. Armbow I think it's called.

just so you know, warlocks dont have to draw their powers from demons or fey. you could tweak them and make it w/e you wanted.
if i had a forged lock i'd go with the "something messed up at forging, something else spilled in or a spell went off too close" or something like that, thus the warforged warlock.
he just had an extra influx of eldritch energy at creation

Since warforged are (at least hinted VERY strongly in secrets of xendrik) to be originally Quori "tech", warforged warlocks aren't all that difficult to swallow.

Also Merrix D'Cannith IS experementing with new versions of warforged at sharn's forge, odd and unique products aren't out of reason.

But it boils down to what the DM wants. If they say no to a warforged warlock, play a wizard/psion/soul knife going for soul bow prc/ranger/scout or whatever else you would like to be a ranged damage character - (warforged Psions with psi-forged body also rock).

I've always found the enjoyment of playing a warforged to be truely stepping away from "normal" thinking about things. A solid shift in the way you percieve things can make for a very fun experiance.
Eshenaleros

i can also see the point about stepping away from the norm. after all, isn't that what playing a big magical robot is all about? I'm thinking of going for soulknife, but i'm still not sure.

Barbarian is actually one of the classes with drawbacks - specifically, you can't use adamantine armor since it prevents fast movement and the two DRs you get overlap instead of stacking.

i didn't realise they didn't stack. hmm.... oh! i know what i'm gonna play! how does a multiclass fighter warforged with the adamantine body feat that also gets levels in artificer, and maybe even a level or two in psion sound?

Fighter/Artificer is a good solid idea, especially if you go for the meleeficer build and PrC to WF Juggernaut, I'm not sure if Psion would really be all that useful at that point though, but my practical knowledge of psionics is tenative at best, so others would be able to speak to that better than I.

Well, there's a certain famous NPC in the setting who (or should I say 'which'?) does exactly that. I wouldn't recommend psion though - one or two levels in a caster class will become pretty much irrelevant since you neither have the spell (er, power) levels to do anything major nor the power points to back it up with, so they're pretty much dead levels which grant you nothing except one good save and bad HP/BAB. Should you choose fighter/juggernaut, however, I'd definitely advise you to go looking for the variant dungeoncrasher class from Dungeonscape.

One thing to remember about the artificer is a fair amount of his power is tied up in making things - if your DM likes fast-paced games with almost no long-term downtime (like mine) make sure you don't mind losing a good deal of your crafting abilities.

Also consider this for some later equipment: dedicated wright + portable hole + artificer workshop + bottle of air. It'll give you a workshop that you can take on the road. The bottle of air is so any fires that need maintaining have air when the hole is closed.

First of all, Warforged are NOT robots. I know this was written with a bit of joke. My players always make that joke when explaining to a new player what a warforged is.

If I had to play a warforged Warlock, I'd tied him to his creation forge. His main quest might be to find the source of his power. He could try to find some answers about himself, flee his dreadful "clan" of warlock Warforged (which I'd give a clan name).

My point is, there's always a way, a credible way.

Artificer/Fighter would be a good choice. Not only because the artificer side can heal hitself, but boost it. A soulknife could be interesting. His design could be for assassinations, go beyond enemy-lines or simply act as the rogue character.

I've been trying my hand at a Warforged Duskblade. It seems to be a pretty interesting and well-suited class for the race. The duskblade class is also capable of becoming a Green Star Adept (Complete Arcane) at 5th level. The prestige class slowly turns your character into a construct. Some of the benefits of the prestige class are lost on the warforged but, at level 10, the Green Star Adept gains Rapid Repair allowing a warforged to regenerate hit points.

Is the campaign combat or roleplay heavy? I like all the ideas presented, but if it's roleplay heavy, might I suggest a character taht would be useless in most combats but might be fun to explore as a character concept?

Start with 1 level of warrior (Big note here, Warrior and not Fighter. I'm going for something different). Build the character like a warrior.
Now...from level 2 on take levels in rogue or some other class that's not all about frontlines fighting. Then play up the "I'm sick of War" Roleplaying card.

That's actually become a kind of annoying catchphrase. It's particularly annoying because by any reasonable definition Warforged totally *are* robots.

It's something people yank out and say when they want to say "Warforged don't do X" or "Warforged don't do Y", but it's certainly not a blanket explanation for how Warforged work. In fact, when people say it too much it begins to imply "Warforged are just a kind of metal human", which is *totally* wrong and a horrible way to play them (in my opinion).

Moreover, some DMs restrict barbarians use of magic items which is a huge drawback in an inherently magic realm. Check with your DM though.

At higher levels, this borders on "unplayable" (oops, no magic weapon against the lich and no gauntlets of ogre power? Well... you're screwed...), especially in worlds with a rich druidic and shamanistic tradition.

That would be a very uncommon houserule.

This isn't "some DMs". It's "those few DMs who haven't actually absorbed the change from 1e to 3e yet and don't get how power balance in 3e works".

A level 20 Barbarian who's not allowed to use magic items is going to get creamed by a level 20 Commoner who has a 20th-level PC's wealth in magical gear.

WOOp WOOP do not take green star adept:P
at 10th level you lose your constitution.. this is.. extremely bad:P, and soo not worht all the things you ignore by being a living construct from the prc. wow fast repair. for opssbly a drop of 100 health, for bonuses you oculd get taking juggernaught.. for 5 levels:P

Oh, hell yeah. Green Star Adept is a terrible PrC for anyone, but it's especially bad if you're a race that could be a Juggernaut instead.

The whole idea of a PrC for spellcasters that gives you the abilities of a tank is problematic. Same goes for Dragon Disciple (which only Bards or Sorc dips should take).

That would be because the class isn't meant for sorcerers. Try using assassin instead.

What about monk. You get that free +2 to armor and instead of taking a body feat take Kung Fu Genius. It makes the wisdom to armor problem go away by making it intelligence based. I don't remember but the slam may stack with the improved unarmed strike of a monk too. Get your self some power fist out ECS and pound away. There are lots of ways to trick out a monk they way you want. Rage, sneak attack, Damage Reduction and even Turning and Smite, all these can added to the monk class through he variants on Crystal keep.

Yesterday, I started playing a Warforged Paladin using the Level Substitution provided in one of the new books. Being able to use Smite Evil/Smite Construct could come in handy and he can also heal some of his own damage.
I figured into his backstory that he was created as a bodyguard for the archbishop assigned to a royal court. It just seemed that a warforged paladin would have to be created to the class rather than consciously choosing as a human would. After the Day of Mourning, he's out of a job and now roaming the land looking to do good.
Anyway, check out...I think it's Races of Eberron for the Warforged Paladin. His character voice is similar to a British Buzz Lightyear.

And you could take a level in warmage and pick up the Enlightened Fist PrC, giving you some pretty good spell access.

This combo is a good setup for the Spellcarved Soldier from the "Races of Eberron" (RoE) book. Awesome Prestige Class. Nice mix of magical enhancements plus fighting abilities.

What god do you serve?

Fun thing about Eberron is you don't have to serve anyone. Paladins can simply serve a cause. This works quite well with a Warforged Paladin; I think it states something like this in RoE.

So? If you really want to go straight barbarian, take Mithral Body. It's as good as any of the medium armors a normal barbarian would be wearing.

My last character, Stone, was a warforged "shock trooper" with Adamantine Body, one level of barbarian, then fighter into juggernaut. The idea was that his group of 'forged was created with an internal Eberronshard battery for short bursts of devastating power, intended to break enemy formations in a rush so others could exploit the opening. With Mithral Body and fast movement, the concept becomes "skirmisher", built to swoop in, strike hard, and fade away.

Who does that? Restrictive, and old-school DM's. I always thought that rule was rather silly, especially in 3.5 where it was pretty much opened up to allowing you to choose any race, with any class, wearing anything you wanted. If I wanna make a dwarf bard, wearing a +1 magical tutu, I better damn well be able to! Same as I should be able to play an elf barbarian (very fun to role play actually) wielding a +1 flaming great axe.

Such backward thinking DM's have always annoyed me.

It's not just that it's backward thinking, it's that it's literally incompatible with the current game balance.

Any character who doesn't use magic items becomes totally incapable of competing with any character who does very quickly. Any of the high-CR threats in the Monster Manual are basically impossible to even make a dent in without magic items. Barring magic items from Barbarians just means that Barbarians just became unplayable.

Right-right. And what's the point of playing if you can't collect phat magical lewt?

But back to the original post; I had a player who insisted that warforged were one of the worst races, not to mention totally broken. From a role play perspective, Warforged are the most pure. They are truly are children in this world and have a lot to learn. They could just as easily be played as wide-eyed as they can be played as the hardened warrior.

Their bonus lend them to just about any class. Even the -2 to Wis and Cha isn't such a big deal, even for a Cleric. I once made a Paladin Warforged and this player freaked out, "Why do that? You'll loose out on spellcasting." Well yeah, but a paladin isn't all about spellcasting. They truly make some interesting spellcasters (that +2 Con is a gift really with the extra HP that a mage is lacking). They are some of the most wonderous artificers.

The "Races of Eberron" book gives you some excellent substituition levels for paladin, fighter, and artificer that really flesh out their warforginess. A warforged fighter of any type (barb, or fighter, or monk) would be wildly interesting. They would make some odd rogues for sure. I would love to see a warforged Duskblade; that would be something to see.

Warlock would be pretty cool too; like mentioned before, perhaps when they were made some entity fused with them, allowing them strange powers. Maybe there was a small experimental line where they were fused with various bloods in the forge creating warlocks and sorcerers?

I really-really loved the warforged. They are one of the most unique things to come out of DnD in a very long time. They are so unusual compared to the typical fantasy races of elves and dwarves. In fact, Eberron is such a refreshing world compared to something like Faerun. I really just love it and can't imagine NOT using the setting. It brings so much great stuff to the table.

There is no real "perfect" class for a warforged, and no class they shouldn't attempt to go into. Be imaginative and if yer DM won't let you do it, then he's probably also restricting magical items to barbarians and you'll end up with a stuffy game experience anyways. Beat that DM with a hefty stick till his mind opens up...figuratively, not literally.

Man, that's ridiculous.

Next time your GM gets his editions confused, remind him that the 1E barbarian got magic items added to his allow list every few levels and wound up getting pretty much everything by 10th or so.

Better yet, remind him that at high levels you're supposed to be able to raise a barbarian horde to perform tasks for you. I believe the official example was something like "Dismantle the Grand Temple of Pelor brick by brick."
LoneStranger

07-23-07, 02:52 AM
Why does the guy think they're broken? Yes they have some benefits but they also have some new drawbacks as well so it's about as bad to be a warforged as it is to be just about any other race in D&D overall.

Anyway to the OP what did you decide to do for a class for your warforged? What did you finally take?
