| TevolRia01-26-08, 12:38 PM | An interesting question popped up the other day. I was reading the 3.5 revision of the crystal master, and at the time I was, like “Cool.” A few days later I was running an Eberron game when it hit me: what would happen if a Crystal Master chose for his gemstone to be a dragonshard? So here it goes: What would, in the collective opinion of the boards, and hopefully from the HellCow himself, each dragonshard’s effect be? |
| Edymnion01-26-08, 01:01 PM | You're going to have to post up what book its from so we can go check it out. I don't remember seeing anything called a crystal master... Or at least give us the basic idea of what the class does. |
| Amaril01-26-08, 02:16 PM | http://www.wizards.com/default.asp?x=dnd/psm/20040625d Technically, quori embedded shards are Siberys dragonshards that are implanted in your body. So I would treat them as normal. |

So I would treat them as normal. I saw that and it occured to me that those didn't quite fit the flavor I was looking for. that and it was more than a singular effect. what I was looking for was a singular effect for each dragonshard type. I just realized what you meant... oops. I like that, however, I don't want race to prevent the crystal master from getting hold of the siberys dragonshard effect, whatever it might be. |
| Amaril01-26-08, 03:57 PM | Make a feat with the embed gem class ability as a prerequisite that allows for a non kalashtar or inspired being to be able to use a quori embedded Siberys dragonshard. |
| Edymnion01-26-08, 04:40 PM | For Eberron shards, you could give them a... blast, it isn't magebane... its the +1 weapon enhancement that lets you suck up a single kind of spell and then cast it back at whoever shot it at you. Like you could get it for Magic Missile, and then suck up any magic missiles they shoot at you, then turn around and shoot them right back. Would fit the flavor, since Eberron shards are mainly used for storing arcane magic. |
| TevolRia01-26-08, 05:49 PM | Make a feat with the embed gem class ability as a prerequisite that allows for a non kalashtar or inspired being to be able to use a quori embedded Siberys dragonshard. a good idea. I think that siberys and khyber shards shouldn't be selectable at the first embed gem class feature, but I also think that the embed gem class feature and the quori embbeded shards shouldn't be able to stack... though that is just an opinion. I like the feedback. it makes me think about things that I normally overlook. Edymnion, I like that idea. what level do you think it should become available? |
| TevolRia01-26-08, 06:11 PM | here is an attempt for khyber shards: choose an element at the begining of each day. you gain an effect dependant on the element you have chosen. earth: you gain a bonus against bull rush attempts equal to the number of embedded gems you possess. air: you gain a fly speed equal to 5 feet per embedded gem. fire: you deal 1 point of fire damage with every attack you make. water: you gain a swim speed equal to 10 feet per embedded gem. let me know if this is too strong or too weak. |
| Edymnion01-26-08, 06:14 PM | Edymnion, I like that idea. what level do you think it should become available?None, you can get flat out power resistance with no restriction, which is far more useful than effective immunity to a single arcane spell. After all, if you take it early on, you either have to pick a low level spell (and hence won't get much use out of it at higher levels), or a high level spell (and no use out of it at lower levels), and since you can't swap them out, it tends to regulate itself. |

I like that... however, what's with this choosing a spell thing!? bah, no way. I think it should be the first hostile spell in an encounter. I think that's balanced since it's used only once per encounter, and against repeat enemies, they will either avoid spells or use something weak to start. |
| TevolRia01-26-08, 07:17 PM | OK, This one was practically smacking me in the face. perhaps the siberys dragonshard could grant the ability to use quori embeded shards without being a kalashtar or inspired. and perhaps if you already are of one of those races, it could provide the ability to not lose the HP for getting them. |
| Edymnion01-26-08, 07:32 PM | I like that... however, what's with this choosing a spell thing!?Thats the way the enchantment works. bah, no way. I think that's balanced since it's used only once per encounter, and against repeat enemies, they will either avoid spells or use something weak to start. No, that would be far more expensive, since it would give you complete immunity to one spell per combat, and make you practically immune to spell sneak attacks (not talking rogues here). The balance factor for this is that you choose a single spell, and thats it, thats all you can do. If you want more, get more of the same shard to embed. |
| TevolRia01-26-08, 07:49 PM | how about the first spell in combat, that you are aware of. would that me more balanced. |
| Amaril01-26-08, 11:35 PM | Thinking about it more, there really should be a distinction between a standard quori embedded dragonshard and a random Siberys dragonshard used as an embedded gem. What if the generic Siberys shard granted a +1 to saving throw DCs for powers manifested by the crystal master? My first draft would look something like this: You have the ability to embed a fragment of a Siberys dragonshard into your body as an embedded gem. Prerequisite: At least one embedded gem as the embed gem class ability Benefit: You can embed a Siberys dragonshard into your body instead of a regular gem. You add a bonus to the save DC of powers you manifest. The bonus is equal to +1 for each gem you have embedded in your body. This bonus stacks with the bonus from psionic endowment or greater psionic endowment. As far as a feat for any crystal master that is not a kalashtar or inspired to be able to embed a quori embedded shard... Despite not being a kalashtar or inspired, you have the ability to implant a quori embedded shard into your body as an embedded gem. Prerequisite: At least one embedded gem as the embed gem class ability, use psionic device X ranks, non-kalashtar or inspired Benefit: You can implant and use one quori embedded shard into your body as if you were a kalashtar or inspired. Implanting a quori embedded shard follows the same restrictions as the embed gem ability. Special: You can gain this feat multiple times. Each time you take the feat, it applies to a different type of quori embedded shard. Normal: Non-kalashtar or inspired are required to make a use psionic device check DC 25 to implant and use a quori embedded shard. These are drafts, but I'd be curious about what you think of the feats. |
| Omnirahk, half-Rahkshi01-27-08, 08:08 AM | I like the idea of Siberys shards increasing your power DCs, but I think it's a little powerful. At level 10, that's +6 to all DCs, when you have psicrystal synergy included. Let's not forget that aquamarine boosts your INT (and hence DCs, assuming you're a psion). It'd be too much if it stacks with psionic endowment. Although it's nice if it saves you two feats. Or limit it to +1, +1 for each additional two gems embedded. As for the "spell turning"-esque shard (which dragonshard was that again? I've lost track), I think it's fine for it to be the first spell that targets you. If you feel it's too good, make it require that you be psionically focused, or else that you expend an immediate action to bounce it back. |

I like it. good good. one more to go. the dreaded khyber shard! I don't even know where to begin on this one... |
| Omnirahk, half-Rahkshi01-29-08, 07:53 AM | Well, Khyber shards are associated with binding magic. I suppose you could go for a utilitarian benefit and say it allows you to construct magic items requiring binding (golems, airships, etc.) without casting the required summoning and binding spells, once per day. If you want a more useful one, how about this: "When you are targeted by a mind-affecting effect and successfully save against it, you may, as an immediate action, expend your psionic focus to use psionic dominate (as the power) against the source of the original effect as a psi-like ability (manifester level equals your manifester level). You may use this ability once a day per embedded crystal." (Or should it be once a day, plus one for every two more embedded crystals: twice at 3, three times at 5). That seems to match the binding idea decently. Although I don't particularly like it. TevolRia, I actually like that idea you proposed earlier where you can attune the Khyber shard to a different element. Just make fire deal 1 extra point of fire damage per embedded gem, rather than a static 1. All the others grow better with more embedded gems. Or maybe this effect - although it might make fire more powerful than the others: "When you manifest an energy power that allows a save, you may expend your psionic focus. Anyone who fails their save also takes a -2 penalty to attack rolls, damage rolls, saves, skill checks, and ability checks for one round. You may use this ability once a day per embedded shard." This is essentially the effect of Blistering Spell (PH2). I could be off, I'm away from book. Maybe change it to only work for powers with the [fire] descriptor. You could change the earth one to grant you tremorsense with a range of 5 feet per embedded gem. That'd be neat. |
| Amaril01-29-08, 09:44 AM | Khyber shards are really about binding extraplanar creatures in general. It has been applied to elementals in the utilitarian sense, but to fiendish creatures in the ancient mystical sense. In terms of psionics, binding could be applied to quori or cerebreliths. One idea is to have an embedded Khyber shard allow you to temporarily call and bind a quori spirit to your own body once per day, giving you the benefit of a chosen host feat (introduced in Complete Psionic). |

Are you familiar with the host feats in Complete Psionic? You could always set a time limit on how long the binding lasts (i.e. - minutes or hours). |
| TevolRia02-04-08, 03:19 PM | Are you familiar with the host feats in Complete Psionic? You could always set a time limit on how long the binding lasts (i.e. - minutes or hours). I own the book and like it very much (although there were many concepts that were good, they lacked enough detail to be a true awesomeness). the host feats require for you to already have a being residing in you though, don't they? or are you saying that they gain the benifit of a host feat to represent having an extraplanar being bound to them? temporarily of course. |

That's exactly what I'm saying, but more specifically the feat is chosen when the shard is embedded. The shard essentially allows them to call a quori spirit and bind it to the shard temporarily. Upon embedding, the crystal master determines what host feat the shard will grant once per day. One could even place a longer activation time (i.e. - one full round or even a minute or more). There are all sorts of ways to restrict the effect. |
| TevolRia02-05-08, 01:13 PM | Ok, so I'm going with that idea for khyber shards. that completes things then! |
| Amaril02-05-08, 01:24 PM | Regarding Eberron shards, what if for a limited duration (and uses per day) you were able to convert spells targeted at you to a number of temporary power points based on the spell level? Sort of like a reverse dweomer of transference (http://www.d20srd.org/srd/psionic/spells/dweomerOfTransference.htm). |
| Amaril02-05-08, 01:29 PM | Another note: I wonder if it would be broken if a quori embedded shards were to count as 2 gems for the purposes of embedded gem effects. |
| AlHazred02-08-08, 12:24 AM | I was also thinking of dragonshards when I saw the crystal master PrC; ah well, GMTA. I had different ideas for it, though. Eberron Dragonshard: The crystal master gains +2 hit points per embedded gem. In addition, while maintaining psionic focus, the crystal master is unusually stable and gains a +4 insight bonus to resist bull rush and trip. Khyber Dragonshard: The crystal master gains a +1 bonus on saves against enchantment effects, +1 for every two additional embedded gems. In addition, if the crystal master fails a saving throw against a possession attempt while maintaining psionic focus, he may make the saving throw again one round later; this second attempt expends the psionic focus. If the crystal master succeeds on the second saving throw, the possession attempt fails. (Level restriction: 6th) Siberys Dragonshard: Once per day (plus one additional time per day per two embedded gems), as an immediate action when targeted by a spell, the crystal master may reflect a single spell back on the person who cast it; this functions exactly as the spell turning spell. The crystal master may only use this power when you have psionic focus; this ability costs 1 power point per level of the reflected spell. (Level restriction: 8th) |
