| Daydreamer03-27-07, 04:15 PM | In magic of eberron, it introduces a Daelkyr known as the 'stained one' (non statted) and gives his surroundings and lair descriptions. In the book series about the dragon below, a powerful dragon is in service to a Daeklkyr. Now, at the end of the EBS when it stats a 'typical' Daelkyr it suggests there are only about 6 in the campaign setting. (in magic of eberron it says less than 10). The question i have is, that as incredibly powerful as they are at the end of the book, the sort of power hinted at them in other source material would seem to make them stronger than the typical one respresented. Have any of them been statted? like in a dragon magazine? Does my assumption make sense? Ideally if keith is here he could answer ;). Anyways what do you think. |
| AvonRekaes03-27-07, 04:23 PM | There's not 6-10 Daelkyr in the setting. There's 6-10 Daelkyr on the material plane, trapped in Khyber. The Daelkyr presented in the ECS is the weakest form of daelkyr, the shock troops. They're mostly found in Xoriat. The ones in Khyber, such as the Lord of Eyes, the Stained One, and the Master of Silence, are the generals. They're an order of magnatude above the standard Daelkyr. Look at the Devils. What's the lowest form of Devil? The Lemure, CR 1 or 1/2 right? What's the highest form of Devil? Asmdoeus, Lord of the Nine. CR 32 or something? That's the difference between the ECS Daelkyr, and the Stained One/Lord of Eyes/Master of Silence |
| Daydreamer03-27-07, 04:52 PM | Sorry, i meant in the material plane, not within the hole multiverse. Im not sure what you mean 'the shocktroops' after all they are CR 20 monsters....additionally it introduces them as just the 'Daelkyr' not 'Devil-pit fiend' or 'Tsucora-quori' this implies that Daelkyr isnt a subtype of monster, but that the Daelkyrs mentioned are the same type as for example the stained one. This also concretely implies to me only 6-10 such Daelkyrs are to be found on the material planer period. The only question is if they are, or are not stronger than the typical platform. |
| Belabras03-27-07, 04:58 PM | I think you have to consider the Daelkyr presented in the ECS to be the base creature. Each of the individual Daelkyr start from there, but have extra abilities and class levels on top of that. They've been on the material plan for thousands of years, after all. |
| Daydreamer03-27-07, 05:15 PM | I see, so its reasonable to assume they are stronger? but nothing that we might call 'official' clearly indicates this... id have to imagine they are stronger, as powerful as Cr 20 creatures are, the world has those aplently in dragons etc, if they were 'only' cr 20 creatures the locking them away would hardly be necessary. KEITH STAT OUT A DAELKYR LORD FOR DRAGON MAG OR SOMETHING. |
| Hellcow03-27-07, 05:16 PM | From this Dragonshard (http://www.wizards.com/default.asp?x=dnd/ebds/20050725a): The daelkyr are creatures of madness. A daelkyr drives mundane creatures mad with its presence, and it twists and corrupts everything that it touches. But not all daelkyr are alike. The greatest of the lords of Xoriat have their own specialties and unique powers. The Player's Guide to Eberron identifies a number of these greater daelkyr by name, but at the end of the day the precise number of daelkyr in the world and their power level is up to the DM. I agree with the general sentiment: the daelkyr in the ECS is a powerful creature, but it's around the same level as a balor or pit fiend. Beings like Belashyrra and Dyrrn the Corruptor are more on a level with archfiends. |
| Vharuck03-27-07, 05:17 PM | Keith has said that the ECS daelkyr is the weakest daelkyr you could find, with the daelkyr lords trapped in Khyber being exceedingly stronger. The point in only statting out the baseline is to allow the DM to tailor make any old daelkyr lord he or she wants. Maybe one will be a psion, or the other a rogue, or some such. Most likely it'll just be me throwing on as many outsider levels and cool powers as I want. |
| Daydreamer03-27-07, 05:22 PM | They dont seem to advance by class, but i figure you mean in terms of power type. I dont have the players guide to eberron :P, ill have to pick that up maybe. But that is the sort of 'official' answer i was looking for. Though i doubt they would be as strong as the rajahs, hmmm. |
| Hellcow03-27-07, 05:48 PM | Though i doubt they would be as strong as the rajahs, hmmm. Agreed. I compared them to archfiends. If you use my stats, the Overlords are considerably more powerful than archfiends. |
| AvonRekaes03-27-07, 05:50 PM | I didn't mean that Dealkyr were a subtype, I was using Devils to illustrate the power difference between a the baseline Daelkyr and the named Daelkyr lords you spoke of. The Stained One, Drynn the Corruptor, these are like Asmodeus or Mephistopholese. They're immensely powerful and unique beings with unique powers. I may have gone overboard comparing the standard Daelkyr to a Lemure, but it was just to point out that the CR 20 Dealkyr is the weakest Daelkyr you can ever encounter. |
| DragoonDarkfire03-27-07, 06:00 PM | My opinion is that there are only 13 Daelkyr in existence (Bakers dozen :P) and that one of them is either mysterious/gone or has some other unique characteristic to separate them. |
| Daydreamer03-27-07, 06:05 PM | Have you, or do you plan to stat a sample Daelkyr lord keith? |
| DragoonDarkfire03-27-07, 06:10 PM | I don't feel a Daelkyr LORD is necessary. The Daelkyr in EBC, to me anyway, aren't as powerful as Dyrrn or Belashyrra but they aren't servants or simple shock troops either. Each one is a plotter, a planner and an evil servant of madness who is a threat to a large part (or all of) Eberron. If you want shock troops or underlings to go through then use Mind Flayers or other Aberrations of his creation. I'm betting anything that while Belashyrra is far from vulnerable he probably doesn't have any actual Daelkyr to serve as guards or underlings. |
| Belabras03-27-07, 06:20 PM | Belashyrra is far from vulnerable he probably doesn't have any actual Daelkyr to serve as guards or underlings. Of course not. He's got lots of ridiculously powerful Beholders to do guard duty instead ;) |
| Dragom03-28-07, 02:18 AM | Yes the Special huge Beholder with 17 eyes and is supported by tentacles... and has chitinous hide... |
| Daydreamer03-28-07, 02:37 AM | Yes the Special huge Beholder with 17 eyes and is supported by tentacles... and has chitinous hide... huh? |
| Belabras03-28-07, 11:50 AM | I'm pretty sure Dragom is implying that Daelkyr like to make after market changes to their servants. Certainly seems plausible. |
| Daydreamer03-28-07, 01:55 PM | OH right, that, well ya. Over the summer i might stat up a few samples of these guys, just cause i like to know whats what. |
| ChimericalWolf03-28-07, 03:40 PM | I'm pretty sure Dragom is implying that Daelkyr like to make after market changes to their servants. Certainly seems plausible. Pimp your Aberration? I'm ridin' spinnas. I'm ridin' spinnas, I can't stop? |
| Yakman03-28-07, 06:31 PM | Have you, or do you plan to stat a sample Daelkyr lord keith? He did in the ECS. That's the sample one. The REALLY big ones are up to the DM--I think the best way is just to grab the stats of one of the archdemons or arch devils from BoVD or whatever and use them. |
| Vharuck03-28-07, 06:54 PM | Pimp your Aberration? I'm ridin' spinnas. I'm ridin' spinnas, I can't stop? *Begins creating the daelkyr named Blizzizzang, Lord of Shiny Objects* |

| Teron Gorefiend03-29-07, 02:10 AM | My opinion is that there are only 13 Daelkyr in existence (Bakers dozen :P) and that one of them is either mysterious/gone or has some other unique characteristic to separate them. He's gone good, and is now the scariest of the lot. "But why wouldn't humans want live cockatrices grafted to their bodies?" Seriously, thirteen daelkyr in Eberron, minus one killed or banished by ancient Dakhaani and Gatekeeper heroes, sounds good. You could build a campaign around the PC's trying to learn how they did it and replicate their success before the daelkyr's presence in Eberron releases Tul Oreshka, the Rajah of madness. |

Well, it isn't canon, but there is that ghost Daelkyr from the first Dragon Below book. By all accounts he was killed by goblinoid/gatekeeper forces in the original war. |
| Daydreamer03-29-07, 03:50 AM | I read the dragon below book, i didnt get the impression the Daelkyr was a ghost...perhaps i cant remember it quickly, can u cite the book if you have it? |
| Lancer201003-29-07, 10:24 AM | *Begins creating the daelkyr named Blizzizzang, Lord of Shiny Objects* When I see posts like this, I have to try and not laugh out loud, simply because I'm in the middle of class. |

You could build a campaign around the PC's trying to learn how they did it and replicate their success before the daelkyr's presence in Eberron releases Tul Oreshka, the Rajah of madness. Well here's an idea. 13 Daelkyr only 13 daelkyr are in existence. Though a few were killed in the Daelkyr war that brought the ancient empire of Dahakanni to it's knees (most lore states that about three were killed), the number of Daelkyr will always remain the same. Since they are outsiders native to their plane it is as impossible to kill them as it would be to kill all Rakshasa's or all Quori. There are only 13 daelkyr in existence, 6 are imprisoned in the depths of Khyber and 6 are also imprisoned within Xoriat. Although Dyrrn the Corrupter is infamous as the most powerful daelkyr in Gatekeeper lore. He is in fact not the most powerful in existence. That one belongs to Kyrrakilat the Wanderer. Kyrrakilat (N paragon daelkyr) has left Xoriat behind altogether and tours the multiverse. Visiting planes and worlds at his will. He comes and goes as he chooses and some say he is truly the most insane daelkyr of all. For unlike his brethren he doesn't seek to destroy worlds or corrupt anything short of those who get in his way. He simply comes and goes to planes as he chooses and looks up completely random and inane information that seems to have no applicability with one another. Some speculate he seeks to make the perfect race that will conquer and destroy all the multiverse in their wake. Some speculate he is the daelkyr of doom and that his coming foretells the destruction of the world he visits. This however is probably not true since he has been to Eberron on several occasions. He seems to be immune to the Gatekeeper seals that trap other daelkyr in Eberron and because of his power and the sheer magnitude of his madness Gatekeepers merely keep a careful eye on him. He can also suppress his maddening aura and corrupting touch abilities surprisingly well. He can speak, interact and touch a normal person as though there was no connection to Xoriat. In fact several people have talked and made contact with Kyrrakiliat and suffered no ill consequences from their encounter. PC's who encounter him will find his locations to be sporadic and sometimes completely random. They're just as likely to find him in the middle of a huge battle, watching as people are slaughtered, as they are to encounter him in a tea shop drinking and reading a simple book. Krrakiliat may also provide PC's with valuable information about the daelkyr and Xoriat for apparently no reason at all. His madness truly knows no bounds. |
| Vharuck03-29-07, 07:29 PM | DragoonDarkfire, you are now my personal hero of the week. Kudos. |
| DarthMidget03-29-07, 07:36 PM | I'm officially stealing that Dragoon. |
| Zombomaniac03-29-07, 08:09 PM | Can anyone say "Traveler?" Or "Traveler's friend?" |
| Belabras03-29-07, 08:31 PM | I read the dragon below book, i didnt get the impression the Daelkyr was a ghost...perhaps i cant remember it quickly, can u cite the book if you have it? Starts on page 226 of the Binding Stone. Geth faces the shade of the Daelkyr lord who rulled Jhegesh Dol. |
| Magicianguy13103-29-07, 09:46 PM | I imagined that the generals would have 1 or 2 special powers. I create one called Xavo (Or the Flesh Wrapper). He created Mimics and that one shap shifting ooze in the MM....Anyway! He had Alternate Form (shape shift NOT polymorph) and 10 levels in Wizard. I think they would have some thing like that. :) Magicianguy131 |
| Romulus LoneWolf03-29-07, 10:26 PM | Yeah, I think individualising Daelkyr with Symbionts, Grafts and other special abilities would go a long way to making them more interesting. |
| Daydreamer03-29-07, 10:40 PM | I dont think the word shade means 'undead' or ghost in that context but more like shadow, or representation, or piecemeal form. |
| Belabras03-29-07, 10:55 PM | I dont think the word shade means 'undead' or ghost in that context but more like shadow, or representation, or piecemeal form. Um, it specifically calls what Geth is fighting the spirit of the fallen Daelkyr. If that isn't undead, what is it? |
| AvonRekaes03-30-07, 01:51 AM | This this is weird, I was just explaining why I didn't make my Dealkyr's Shadow monster (inspired by the same one Geth fought) an undead creature. I think outsiders should work a little differently. Take the Quori. When they die their soul gets churned out as another Quori. What if exceptionally powerful Dealkyr "self-ressurect" in much much weaker form? That was the premise behind my monster. (Can still find it easily by following my link in the last post of the Monster Archive thread, and it might show up in the Eberron Bestiary soon) |
| Daydreamer03-30-07, 02:15 AM | Um, it specifically calls what Geth is fighting the spirit of the fallen Daelkyr. If that isn't undead, what is it? OH you and i are thinking about totally different things!! I was thinking about the person the Dragon worked for. However, i didnt think that was actually the completely real daelkyr and just sort of a test thing, not an actual real one. The book left that very ambigious. |
| Stevenruzena03-30-07, 02:40 AM | would there be any stat change for quarter blooded not half whatever like human/ quarter gnome or drow any ideas? |
| Daydreamer03-30-07, 02:59 AM | As i understand it if a half elf breeds with a human you get a human. There are no 1/4s...now that was the rule in 2nd ed, i dont know if it is in 3rd, but i still play with that rule. |
| Zombomaniac03-30-07, 09:03 AM | I believe Unearth Arcana or Savage Species talks about 1/4s and 3/4s and such. |
| Belabras03-30-07, 11:33 AM | Not to derail, but the Daelkyr Half-Breed race isn't the result of actual breeding between a Daelkyr and another species. It's a product of the corrupting influence of just having a Daelkyr close by. We currently don't have anything to indicate what the product of an actual union would be. |

| Daydreamer03-30-07, 08:56 PM | Thats right, i forgot about, so 'half-daelkyr' is really not accurate at all, just colloqial...its more like mutant, a human affected by radiation or something like that. its not half and half, its a human altered. |

| DragoonDarkfire03-31-07, 11:06 PM | Thanks. I got some more info on Kyrrakilat if you'd like it. ____________________ The following information is unknown to almost everyone. Only Kyrrakilat knows of his own past and he seems to be reluctant to tell it. Although this doesn't mean PC's may not come to know from him since the daelkyr is an enigma at best. Kyrrakilat claims to be the first daelkyr in existence. He is the creator of the Mind Flayers, illithidales and elder brains that traverse Xoriat. Though it seems weird that a neutral daelkyr would do this there is a reason behind why he has become the way he is. Kyrrakilat was the first daelkyr in existence and his evil and corruption was unsurpassed on Xoriat where he ruled all. He formed all the daelkyr together and his ultamit goal was to reform the entire multiverse under his own image. His first target was, ironically, Eberron during one of it's first connected phases. Kyrrakilat and his daelkyr servants arrived during a period known as the Dragon/Fiend wars when the dragons and the Rhakshasa Rajas were in pitched combat. Kyrrakilat at first continued with his plans of destruction. But once the fiends and the dragons saw what he and his creatures were doing. They both turned on the daelkyr and not even Kyrrakilat's powers could overcome the massive might of the Rajas and the dragons. All the daelkyr save for him were destroyed. Many of the Mindflayers and elder brains that had accompanied them were destroyed or fled back into Xoriat. Kyrrakilat survived, barely, but was unable to return to Xoriat. He was stuck in Eberron and forced merely to watch as the Raja's were imprisoned and the dragons fled back to Argonessen. The daelkyr remained but found himself to become apathetic to his former goals. He had, in a way, become humbled by the sheer malice and power of the Raja overlords. He no longer cared about the destruction and reformation of the multiverse. He merely went off and began wandering through random planes of existence. Kyrrakilat has been to Eberron a few times after his initial defeat. First was during the age of the giants and a glimpse of the Quori war. The second was during the peek of the empire of Dahakanni, where a legend persists that it was he who told Vvaraak of the oncoming of Xoriat and spawned the Gatekeepers. His final trip to Khorvaire was during the Last War. Though nothing can be proven, an odd character matching his description WAS seen in Cyre a month before the Mourning. Leading several theories about his connection to Cyre's destruction. __________________________________ Kyrrakilat N Paragon daelkyr, Ardent 20 Hit dice: 1400 (160 + 120 + 640 + 480) Initiative: +13 Speed: 40ft Armor Class: 61 (+13 Dex, +14 natural, +12 insight, +12 luck) Base attack/Grapple: +60/+78 Attack: unarmed strike +78 (1d4 +18 + corrupting touch) Full Attack: unarmed strike +78/+73/+68/+63/+58/+53 (1d4 +18 + corrupting touch) Space/Reach: 5ft/5ft Special Attacks: Aura of Madness (+44 DC), Corrupting Touch, Spell Like abilities. What does 'freely' mean per see, like how close can they get to the surface, does this mean world wide freedom-etc. |
| glug04-03-07, 04:56 PM | He's gone good, and is now the scariest of the lot. No way! Good? Evil? All they are concerned with is the spread of madness, for the sake of madness! Just as we, here on Earth, are only concerned with the collection, creation and spreading of Material things =) |
| Daydreamer04-03-07, 07:37 PM | What i find interesing is the alignment neutral evil, and not chaotic evil --_ |
| DragoonDarkfire04-03-07, 07:51 PM | What i find interesing is the alignment neutral evil, and not chaotic evil --_ just because something thrives on madness does not make that person amoral or unethical. The only reason they're evil is that Xoriat is mildly evil aligned. Madness is, in a sense, nothing but pure raw emotion without conscious thought to guide or direct it. |
| Daydreamer04-04-07, 12:08 AM | Im not sure about that, that would make an amebo or other singular celled organisms mad. I think of madness as twisted reason-or reason from obviously false premises. When i flew from ireland to canada there was a nut on the plain who though some spies working for both Israel and palastein were out to get him, he tried to get off the plain. His actions in a way might have been justified if his premises were true. But anyone who has any sense knows those groups dont have a mutual spy network. Now evil madness is when maliciousness is combined with disregard for reason. This would be the case of a killer like in silence of the lambs. |
| The Dreaming Duck04-04-07, 11:53 AM | Well, it isn't canon, but there is that ghost Daelkyr from the first Dragon Below book. By canon, such a thing couldn't exist. Daelkyr are outsiders; undead templates can't be applied to outsiders, just like outsiders can't be raised from the dead. Soul and body are one and the same. A DM is obviously free to do whatever makes for a good story, but a daelkyr ghost is... well... an aberration. ;) |
| DragoonDarkfire04-04-07, 12:42 PM | Im not sure about that, that would make an amebo or other singular celled organisms mad. Creatures without an intelligence score aren't mad. They lack any sentient thought or emotion altogether, that's why vermin are immune to mind affecting spells and effects. I think of madness as twisted reason-or reason from obviously false premises. When i flew from ireland to canada there was a nut on the plain who though some spies working for both Israel and palastein were out to get him, he tried to get off the plain. Thinking about illogical things is stupidity. Displaying them openly and without conscious reason is madness. Now evil madness is when maliciousness is combined with disregard for reason. This would be the case of a killer like in silence of the lambs. Mind Flayers also fit the bill. But they're LAWFUL Evil, and they can be because they don't have any regards for life of other beings. They see themselves above all (except the daelkyr) and as such they have no problem killing or torturing humans just as you would have no problem stepping on a bug. |
| DragoonDarkfire04-04-07, 12:44 PM | By canon, such a thing couldn't exist. Daelkyr are outsiders; undead templates can't be applied to outsiders, just like outsiders can't be raised from the dead. Soul and body are one and the same. A DM is obviously free to do whatever makes for a good story, but a daelkyr ghost is... well... an aberration. ;) It could be that the lord of Jeghs Dol was nothing but the consciousness of the daelkyr that was preserved after it was killed as it was tied to the place. Perhaps it was more along the lines of a Psion Uncarnate, just the metaphysical thought left behind after the daelkyr was killed. |
| Hellcow04-04-07, 01:16 PM | Regarding the alignment issue, it's important to understand that "madness" is simply one way to look at Xoriat. "Terror" and "horror" are equally valid aspects of the plane. Mortals who interact with plane are often driven mad, and it does draw on primal aspects of the brain. But Xoriat is NOT the plane of Chaos; that's Kythri. The daelkyr are horrifying. Their mere presence drives lesser creatures mad. They take pleasure in corruption and destruction. But they are NOT chaotic; they act in accordance with their own mysterious goals and customs. Beyond that, bear in mind that madness itself isn't always chaotic. Some forms of madness cause wild and chaotic behavior. But madness also encompasses obsession, coldly logical sociopaths, and many, many more forms of behavior. |
| Daydreamer04-04-07, 02:07 PM | True that, as for the Daelkyr ghost-the book seems to strongly suggest that wath Geth is going through is not literally real. Perhaps like some ancient magical test-he fights some sort of wierd Daelkyr (its not even 100% on it being a Daelkyr if i recall) but this creature and the fort hes in dissapear when defeated and your left to wonder how real it all was. |
| glug04-04-07, 03:36 PM | True that, as for the Daelkyr ghost-the book seems to strongly suggest that wath Geth is going through is not literally real. Well, the sword was real =) Now that you mention the fort, I know what the hell everyone is talking about.. I still have to read the last book and thought you were referring to that. I thought of that situation as being along the lines of that star wars cave where Luke see's vader and.. other spoilery foreshadowing. That place was apparently the scene of an epic battle between a dark and light jedi, that ended with the horrible death of the dark jedi, and left such an evil force smudge (haha) on the land, that any who entered the cave saw the thing that they feared the most. This fort was the scene of some terrible atrocities, and I believe a major battle with the gatekeepers. It makes sense that it could have left some "psychic residue" on the world, even if we can't find the exact rules to make that work.. not entirely necessary and makes for a good story =) |
| Daydreamer04-04-07, 03:38 PM | yes, thats a good analogy, i saw it very much like the star wars cave myself. |
| Belabras04-04-07, 05:23 PM | I'd agree as well. Best way to sum up that little section. |
