So homunculi will never willingly travel more than 1500 feet from their creator. Doesn't that make dedicated wrights kind of useless? They're supposed to stay at home and work while master goes out adventuring, but they get lonely if he goes too far.

I guess you could interpret the rules ("...never travels beyond this distance willingly, though it can be moved forcibly") to mean that it's OK if it's standing still and the creator is doing the traveling, but that seems kinda cheesy. The original MM homunculus entry adds "If this occurs, the creature does everything in its power to regain contact with its master," but the ECS drops that line, so who knows...

If you order it to stay behind and work, then it isn't staying willingly since it must follow your orders, right? Or am I misunderstanding something...

The implication is that it will drop everything else to return to its master if it gets out of range. The homunculus in the MM said even said that explicitly, but the wording is different in the Eberron book. I'm not sure if that means they meant for it to be different in Eberron. It certainly sounds like you could chain it to its work table and leave and it would do nothing but struggle against the chains until you got back in range.

I'm pretty sure the DW entry specifically says something along the lines of "unlike other homunculi, the DW prefers to stay at home and work on items", which would override the general rule.

It does indeed, just checked.
