By now, you can probably tell from my threads that I am a Marvel fanatic and I can easily say I'm one of the biggest marvel fans on this site. My favorite villain of all time is Doctor Doom. I was thinking of using a warforged as the base creature, but what classes should i pick up if i want to use elemental lightning as well as combat, such as Doctor Doom? How would any of you aproach this?

I thought Doom was a guy in a suit, similar to Iron Man. Therefore, it stands to reason that they would be built in a similar manner. The difference is where each one puts thier focus.

Ofcourse Dooms a man in a suit, but the idea of a warforged based on Doom gets my blood flowin.

I know it isn't the most optimized build out there but how about a warforged warlock?

If anything, Dr Doom's an Artificer. Perhaps one of the last few High-Level Artificers alive.

I'd also make him a Human with 10 levels in the Renegade Mastermaker Prestige Class.

Hmmm... lets see, a warforged artificer that rules a nation that uses his power and position to raise his people up to the forefront of the world, typically by stepping on little people and knocking everybody else down to size.

Off the top of my head, I'd say Lord of Blades.

With all honesty, I wouldn't. This is Eberron, not the Marvel Universe. If I want to play superhero characters, I play a superhero RPG, not a fantasy RPG.

With all honesty, I wouldn't. This is Eberron, not the Marvel Universe. If I want to play superhero characters, I play a superhero RPG, not a fantasy RPG.Not so fast, Sharn is an EXCELLENT place for D&D style super heroes (I know, I've got my Batman-esque NPC, the Black Dragon, stationed in Sharn).

The low level nature of Eberron means its quite easy to replicate street level super heroes like Batman, Daredevil, Green Arrow, etc. Even the X-Men can be a DIRECT PORT into Eberron via Abberant marks. The abberant marks already carry stigma much like being a mutant, all of them give otherwise normal people superhuman powers, and there is already a "Brotherhood of Evil Mutants" built into the setting via House Tarkanan. Just name it the A-Men (for Abberant Men), give "Cyclops" an Abberant Mark of Scorching Ray that comes out of his eyes, "Shadowcat" gets Ghostform, Colossus has Iron Body, Storm has Control Weather, etc.

And for the record, I also play Mutants & Masterminds 2e, and have used it to play an Eberron game once. Just because a system wasn't originally intended to work with something doesn't mean it can't be used for it, you just have to get creative in how you do it.

I myself have an NPC similar to the Question from Justice League Unlimited. No. Conspiracy........singular.

Besides, Dr. Doom and Magneto are probably two of the best villians ever to pop out of comics (and are possibly THE best). They are archetypes in and of themselves, and as such, can be a great fit for any roleplaying game. (I am speaking of the substance, not the form however) As far as personality of many of ther superheroes and villians, I used Cyclops (the cool Kirby/Clairmont version, not the incredibly lame Morrison/Whedon one running around now) as the base personality of one of my most memorable characters ever. Specifically the one whose name I use on these boards.

You want lightning? You go Lyrandar.
You want artificer? You go Cannith.

You want Doom? Go both.

Vondam d'Lyrandar, the half-elven bastard child of a secret and forbidden tryst has grown from scorned child to a bitter, powerful, and power-hungry man. I'd say definately artificer, an aberrant mark, and for a twist how about some levels of warmage. Crunch-wise, the high Intelligence and Charisma required for artificer plays wonderfully with warmage. Fluff-wise, Doom was always a master of the arcane arts, so a casting class makes sense for the Eberron version. Renegade mastermaker also seems like a good choice, showing his disdain for his Cannith family, while brokering airship deals and outright skyway piracy would be a slap in Lyrandar's face. Maybe have him set up shop somewhere in the Lhazzar Principalities, perhaps under the guise of a "new and benevolent" nation with ties to the anicient, elven rites of Vol. Maybe have him work out a deal with the Lord of Blades, conscripting warforged as his "Lightning Guard" (read "Doom-Bots") to bolster those few that he had by right or by trickery from his parent houses.

And of course, he needs a mask. :)

Personally, I kinda see Merrix as being much more Luthoresque than Doomy.

So, fine cloaks by day and green and purple, gorgon emblazoned, prototype-living construct golem-armor by night? All he needs is a plucky reporter at the Chronicle butting her nose into his business and a redeemed warlock with fell flight and brimstone blast as a nemesis...

Dr. Doom is (last I remember) next in line to be Sorcerer Supreme, that means that he's got some serious magic, behind his inventiveness. So I'd either say Wizard/Artificer, or pure Wizard. Archmage would be nice too.

Rogue member of the Twelve? (Maybe he's Mordain  )

Granted, this is true, but the only reason Doom got into the arcane is to save the soul of his mother who had been tricked by Mephisto. IMHO, if you're gonna fight a demon prince (Mephisto, despite his nearness-in-name-only to Mephistopholes, is very much Chaoitc Evil) with arcane instead of divine, I'd go warmage. Yeah, a high level wizard or cleric can banish them back to wherever they come from, but a high level multiclass artificer/warmage can make a way to get there and kill him on his own turf.

But that's just my take on it.

Ok, doom's a favorite of my best friend and myself...hell we'd probably serve him loyally if he ever existed.
So to me I see him as a gestalt Character. Ya see, he would never split his focus, as a multiclassed Character would. Doom's a genius- a rival of reed richards and a sorcerer on par with Strange-even captured the Siver surfer's power cosmic with a machine that had a few arcane tweeks to it.
So I see a gestalt Artificer/wizard(transmuter or conjurer- maybe evoker) but not a warmage- too restricted in use, and remember he used a spell to force Mephisto to see him.....so that shows more magical leeway than a warmage/beguiler/Dread Necromancer would possess.

I don't agree with Doom being best fit by the Lord of Blades. While it seems to fit on the surface, the Lord of Blades has a belief in racial supremacy as an underlying motivation, placing him closer to Magneto (from the early Kirby/Clairmont days) or Apocalypse than to Doom.

Indeed, a nice amalgam of both. Granted, I could see the Eberron Doom having nothing but disdain for such fanatical and... "common" tactics, but like the regular Doom, he'd use the LoBster until his usefulness ran out...

Because, Edymnion, I read the comics and I believe he does achieve at many times effects that could be duplicated with 7th and 8th level spells.

Just because most of the important people in Eberron are at most level 10 (one of the reasons i like Eberron) does not mean a nice beefy 20th level character would'nt make an interesting villain for a campaign.

Most of my campaigns start at level one and end at 13th-20th level (Even my Eberron games, my players like to play the character for extended campaigns)

It's Eberron the perfect place for comic book fun. Like the Joker (BEST villain EVER), Hum bard3/artificer7 with lots of potions of cloudkill/tasha's hideous laughter, I once made a cameo for my games..

As a 15th level character I'd make him simply artificer5/wizard10...

This works, especially if one of the PC's is an artificer with a talent for innovation. I seem to remember Doom having a giant chip on his shoulder concerning some famous inventor........

This idea will require a bit of monkying with the setting, but bear with me.

Doom is:
1. Ruler of a backwater country
2. A nobleman who belives he has the right to rule the world.
3. a scientific and magical genius.
4. horrably scared, at least he beleves so, and only appears in public in full armor compleat with masking helmet.
5. Bent on saveing his mother's soul from a terrably after life.
6. archenemy of one of the most respected scientiests of the "modern" world.
7. always has a doomsday device that he just needs one thing to complete, something that can only be found in the "modern" world.
8. talks in third person, rants about his genius and how pitiful the heroes are, reviles his plan when he is sure that no one can stop him (thus insureing the heroes know just how to stop him when they excape)

For location I suggest Q'barra. It's out of the way, no one thinks too much about it. No matter what "Doom" does it's too hard to actualy go after him there directly. The nation as a whole thinks they are remaining true to the values and history of Galifar. It's semi-modern with enough local mystery to keep it exotic.

Now drop the current king and replace him with "Doom". King Viktor ir'Doom. Make him a 15-ish artificer who investes a good portion of his countries resources into his mad plans and into his armor. He keeps his subjests fairly ignorant of the outside world while spinning propaganda to keep them behind him. On occation he personaly fights off lizardfolk raids and demonic incursions and so his people see him as a hero.

I know many think he needs some wizard levels to fill out his magic side, but Doom seldom just waves his hands and conjures a dragon to fight the FF. He's alabout the unstopable eldrich machine of DOOM! He incorperates plenty of magic into many of his devices, but seldom goes about casting magic missle on anyone. The artificer class is perfict for the job in my opinion.

So, what makes Eberron's own ir'Doom the man with the plan?

Viktor was born to noted cleric Werner ir’Doom and Cynthia ir’Doom, a witch. Some accounts state that Cynthia ir’Doom died when he was still a baby, others suggest she survived until at least his adolescence and may have inadvertently gave Viktor ir’Doom the idea for his future green attire by buying him a green cloak. Werner ir’Doom was later to die, shielding young Victor, in a bog while being chased by the king of Q’barra’s men, after Werner was unable to use even his healing skills to aid the Queen. Viktor ir’Doom was very embittered by this experience.

While a child, he discovered his mother's magical artifacts and ir’Doom began his studies into the occult as well as developing his innate scientific abilities. Either due to tales of his sheer brilliance or due to the technical sophistication of an insurgency campaign against the King led by Doom, his astounding reputation came to the attention of the dean of Artifice at Morgrave University in Breland, and ir’Doom was offered a full scholarship. At Morgrave, ir’Doom first met both Reed d’Cannath and Grimm ir’Tharashk, two men who would go on to become his enemies in later years. Reed d’Cannith, in particular, represented a substantial threat to Doom's self-perceived superiority.

Ir’Doom began conducting hazardous manifest-zone experiments.
The focus of Doom's research was to construct a trans-dimensional projection device with which he could communicate with his dead mother. There was a flaw in the design which d’Cannath pointed out to him, but ir’Doom's pride prevented him from accepting d’Cannath's advice and fixing the device before testing it. The machine worked perfectly for two minutes and 37 seconds, in which time Doom discovered that his mother was trapped in Marbar, the endless Night. Then the device exploded, permanently damaging Doom's face; the most recent retelling of Doom's origin attests that this was the work of the relm its self striking at him, and by some accounts, the facial damage amounted only to one cheek being marked with a long, jagged scar, a scar that ir’Doom's incredible vanity magnified into a hideous disfigurement.

Refusing to acknowledge his own fault in the matter, ir’Doom blamed d’Cannath for the accident, finding it easier to believe that Richards had sabotaged his work out of jealousy than admit to his own imperfection.
Ir’Doom was expelled from school afterward, and traveled the world searching for a cure for his scarred face, which he viewed as a symbol of his failure. Eventually Doom discovered a village of Yuan-ti amongst whom he lived for a number of years. Mastering their sorcerous disciplines, he took control of the monastery, and had the monks assist him in crafting a suit of body armor. In his eagerness to finish donning the suit and begin his new life as "Doctor Doom," however, he donned the armor's freshly-cast mask before it had been properly cooled, ensuring that, if his face had not been seriously disfigured before, it now most certainly was.

This suit would become his trademark, and thanks to his eldrich enhancements, it puts him on par in terms of personal power with some of the greatest threats on Eberron. After this, he returned to his homeland, overthrew the standing government, and crowned himself king. Ruling with an iron fist and an equally strong will, Doom began to redirect the small nation's resources to help him realize his goals.

Every part of his armor should be enchanted, he has the resources of his entire country to work with after all. +5 Full plate, cloke of flying, belt of giant str, wand sheaths, ect. And many compleat or near compleat eldrich devices. He want's to tear open Marbar and bring his mother back, conqure Khorvaire and destroy the dragon marked housed, Cannath in particular. He blames Reed d'Cannath for the accident that ruined his face and reputation as well as for casting his mother's soul even further into the Endless Night (true or not) and eventualy to wrest all the secrets of magic from the dragons.

Edit: the history I've included is an adapted version of Doom's Wikipedia enrty.

I think Artificer or Warlock easily takes care of the class. Both have the excellent crafting skills needed to pull off the myriad of inventions he seems to use.

As far as what level, I say make him a few levels higher than the party, no matter what level the party is. Remember, with Doom, much of it is personal. In order to pull this off, there needs to be a personal connection with the characters. He hates them, or at the least, one in particular. Such a villain needs to be of a level where the party can survive his wrath, and where the party can defeat him (but it will take work), only to see him return to haunt them at a later date.

If you just make a guy who looks like Doom, but has no more connection to the party than any other BBEG, the you do not have Doom.

Luke Cage? Super heroes can't have real phone book names. In my day, super heroes were required by law to have a color, object, energy source, or animal in their name.

A name like Luke Cage is just ghay. He needs a name like The Pink Flaming Ferret Stick, it follows all the rules for naming a super hero. Someone leaping around in tights and leotards and with a name like The Pink Flaming Ferret Stick is a real hero that kids these days can look up to.

Doom is at his best when dealing with the Fanstastic Four. While he can easily be used against someone else, an attempt to bring him in, and truly capture the feel of him, means that what we see in the FF comics should be used as a primary source. Without that personal motivation to take it to the heroes, what you have will just be a guy in a suit, with nothing to make him different (in the minds of the players) from other guy in suit villians, like Titanium Man, Crimson Dynamo, or any of the others.

Doom may need no reason to attack anyone aside from them having what they want, but the players will need a reason to think of Dr. Doom when this villian shows up other than the DM telling them too. Doom should spring to thier minds without the DM ever having mentioned his name! To do that, it needs to be personal. The players should get to know him, perhaps even before the NPC in question becomes a villian. Otherwise, (especially if the DM is using his make of Iron Man as an NPC) he won't get the recognition he deserves. "Hey look, it's an evil version of that Iron Man build we saw recently! Maybe it's Iron Monger, or something!" Not what I would want to see if I was trying to introduce a villian like Doom (one of the all time greatest supervillians ever) into my campaign.

Victor Von Doom Articifer (atleast 5th) Reforged 3rd Sorcerer 3rd {Art 5 is because of the preregs for the reforged}
He is/was a major reformist in his conclave of warforged that have gathered in a community.(Latvia village) A castle over looks the village occupied by Cannith. Victor is an elder of sorts of the village and is employed by the Cannith in the secret labs of the castle. It was during this time that victor shed his shell of armor (Reforged). During an accident that occured in the lab he was scarred. It was that trauma that pushed him over the edge. As an articifer he created the armor and weapons he needed to combat the Cannith.

It was Richard Elmont Eros d'Cannith that was in the lab at the time when the explosion took place. "REED" pulled him from the wreckage saving his live in the act.
You know where to take the story if you know the history of the marvel universe. Maybe even add a few other characters.
A love interest of Victors and 'Reeds' is Sue Stormwind a Kalashtar Psion with a ring of Invis. with TK abilities.

A merc. only know as Grimm that was in the room when the accident took place and while wearing a suit of scalemail with a bonded earth elemental can not remove it know.
Possibly augment the str etc of the character.

Others of the era can be created with a little thought.
