So I was spending some time today trying to come up with a good character concept and came across the Dragonmark Heir PrC. I've never really considered it much, but it looks like it could have it's potential. I'm curious what classes and marks make a good combination with it. I was thinking maybe bard since it seems like a pretty "diplomatic" type character anyway. It seems like a fun class so I would be glad to see some other people opinions and builds.

Do you have an idea of what House you want to be in? A character concept?

I'm rather a fan of the Rogue + Dmark Heir combo myself -- I like the well rounded skill selection (and all those skill points!) that you get before entering the PrC.

Still, like Runepriest said, the first thing you have to do is pick a house and consider what role you are going to play in that house. From there, the base class should present itself.

Look at the dragonmarked supplement book. It got lots of options for dragonmarked characters; veru cool prestige class, feats and more. I personnaly like the Orien prestige class (Blade of Orien) and the Wind Wraith, even if they are all cool.

Check it out.

I haven't really decided on a house specifically. Just wanted to see what people's opinions were on the class, as well as if any of the houses made particularly strong or weak builds and the like. I'd have to say personally the mark of finding and the mark of storm are probably my favorite two.

If you take the DM heir class, you generally say good-bye to raw combat power, so forget about "strong builds". On the other hand side, it's a nice ticket out of trouble - the houses care for their own.

The class isn't for someone looking for a strong build. It gives you some role playing incentives and some in game character benefits (that aren't actual power ups) because you're closely tied to a marked house but taking any one of the base classes to 20 would be a "stronger build" in my opinion.

When I said strong or weak builds I was referencing the differences between each house's heir, not compared to other classes. Still possibly a question in error, but thats just some clarification. I like the concept of having abilities that aren't expressly powers...things like maybe a free ride on the lightning rail, or a sizable discount on bodyguards. Any thought's on what some of the houses might be able to offer?

The book Dragonmarked has pretty nice tables and lists for what Members of the house can expect to get by being a member and through use of the Favored In House feat.

Indeed, Dragonmarked will be a boon if you're planning on playing a DM Heir. That said, I'm partial to the house Jorasco DM Heir. If you go into it with a martial class that normally cannot heal themselves (like say, a fighter or rogue) you give yourself a little more survivability if things turn ugly. You'll also be loved by your party if you find yourself without a healer of some sort, by providing limited healing in tight situations and cheaper healing while out of combat through your house connections.

And remember at level nine, your lesser dragonmark qualifies for the quicken spell like ability feat.

I also want to play a fighter-type that's a house Deneith dragonmark heir at some point. That would just have style--badass mercenary who has the power to block fireballs and such evil magics.

Personally, I'm quite fond of my Lyrandar heir (half-elf swashbuckler 4/storm sentry 1). The Mark of Storm is pretty sweet, but so is the whole house. I like the freedom that being a Lyrandar heir gives you- "You manifested a mark! Great! Here, go see the world some and get back to us when you're ready to settle down." Plus, who doesn't like a little Errol Flynn/good ol' fashioned swashbuckling? Oh yeah, and the "go ahead and hit a dragonmarked heir, punk. Go right ahead" feel is kinda great too. I haven't decided on the DM heir PrC yet, but I suppose I should if she wants to work her way to Baron someday.

Just my two cents.

My wife is currently playing a Bard/Ranger of House Lyrandar, who is planned to become a Bard 2/Ranger/3/Storm Sentry 5/Dragonmark Heir 5/Windwright Captain 5. I think it is a record (or tied for it) for the most classes/prestige classes in our group! This character becomes quite potent at using her dragonmark in varied and interesting ways many times per day!
