Some how this seems like a cool combination; Warforged and Duskblade. It moves almost perfectly into Spellcarved Soldier. Now if only you could convince your DM that repair and inflict damage spells should be on their spell list.

Perhaps a Training course fueled by Aundair to teach Warforged in the proper ways of combining arcane magic with combat prowess?

I dont know about the duskblade. There is a census in my group that the duskblades are cheap and are not aloud to be used, for both PC and NPCs. Though thats just for my group, though I'm pretty sure there are more groups that agree with us. Back on topic, yeah Warforged make awesome melee characters, but the spellcaster part of the class, mmm not so much.

There's nothing wrong with the Warforged being spellcasters - especially duskblades. They do not gain int penalties, and the duskblade's ability to not have ASF helps Mithral Body be useful.

I don't think the Duskblade is cheap. For my personnal take, all the Tome of battle is cheap. But that's another topic. For the warforged duskblade, maybe it would be possible to trade feats with an expended spell list. That of course would be a house rule.

How is the duckblade cheap? Yeah I know they get get a lot of low level spells per-day but they are not impressive spell of spells. You still can do a lot with them but a melee spell caster has a host of other problems that off sets the abilities over usefulness. An warforged not making good caster where are you getting that from. Sure they get a penalty in to of the stats but that just means if the player want to play one as a caster they have to work at if harder. I think that makes for a better character then one with a twenty in the stat that cast with little effort. I tire of people saying this is broken, cheap or to weak. If you don't like that class don't play it but don't limit the other players in your group. I personally hate the Book of the Nine swords but I have a DM that loves it and always wants to mix it in with the older classes to up date them. That is fine for his NPC or another player that likes that sort of thing I rather play the class as is or with a variant that I like.

Now that I put my two cents in let me get back on topic. I do like the idea of a warforged duskblade. It should kick so butt around the battle field. But as for getting the repair spells on you list as a duskblade I only have this to say can they normally heal themselves in any way besides another player casting or an item? No, well that makes that easy to wonder why your DM most likely will say no. But, I think arguing for the skill use magic device is not to far off. Most spell casters that don't get the full ninth level spell s get the skill. If you can do that then I would maybe just pick up a eternal wand or three of Repair damage of variance levels . Start off with one of Repair light damage and as you level add to your collection. I know you most likely don't want to spend the cash but if your party has no artificer what chose do you really have.

Another thing you could do is take skills that allow you to repair your self through nonmagical means. The ECS talks about using the craft skill to do it on page 46. You can also pick up a warforged repair kit for 50 gold. I mean it gives you something to do while the fleshies sleep.

Yes, you can, but it takes forever. A craft check is 8 hours long, and the equation for how much healing is accomplished is [Check Result]-15. I'd say it gives you something to do on the lightning rail or the ship, but that's going to be the only thing you do.

Personally, I think it would be reasonable to allow the repair spells for a Duskblade so long as they lost all of the healing spells. Makes them less useful to others but able to take care of themselves.
Just my 2 CP tho.

One of my favorite characters was a warforged warmage. No Int penalty, and he took Mithral Body at 1st level - and tadah! - no arcane spell failure. Very nice.

One of the other poster's said it - can the party wizard normally heal himself? It's nice that a warforged wiz can do so, but mechanically, you're so limited in your number of spells that you need to make them count. It's not your role to heal (or repair ;) ).

I don't think a duskblade is cheap, it's just the spellsword PrC as a full class - just not as powerful. You can wear armor and use weapons?! Great! This fighter can wear armor and use weapons better than you. You can cast spells?! Great! This wizard can cast spells better than you. If you've got a savy DM - it's balanced... ;) , I think.

Here's one you don't see too often - a warforged warlock! Also wears light armor with not penalty. The Cha penalty is a downer, but if you happen to roll really well and get an 18, put it in Cha for a 16, and you're back up to you're up to 18 by lvl 8. And the Con boost helps with the warlock's middling HP and bad Fort Save. Besides, only so many invocations even require a save, making the Cha penalty not that big of a deal. You could also channel hideous blow through your natural attack! The best part, though, is UMD as a class skill - and the ability to take 10 on it. Wands of Repair suddenlty become very usefull for you...

Can you imagine the backstory for that kind of PC? How does a warforged become a warlock? One of Merrix's crazy creations? A pact with a demon eager to corrupt such a new form of life? :D Too fun.

I'm not too sure on this point, at least at the very lowest of levels. You see the spells per day plus arcane attunement? With just a +1 modifier, they technically get more 'spell slots' and 'spells known' than sorcerers at 1st level! That just ain't right, I don't care how you spin it.

Hmm. Forgot about the arcane attunement. Gosh, I never really looked at it as such... but I suppose this is pretty broken. Huh. :thinks:

Granted, their selection is rather limited in comparison, but still... yeah... that ain't right!

I've played a WF warlock, and I can tell you that my backstory was absolutely nuts. In fact, it was an in-game story. Let me explain.

I was a fighter and died horrifically - my body was broken entirely and mashed to tiny bits. However, I had been blessed by a coatl with the purpose of "helping save the world," and I had a dragonmark to prove it. Siberys Mark of Passage to be precise. Anyway, demons had apparently been tracking my moves, and they diverted my spirit's path to Dolurrh into a new warforged body that had just been constructed to be an agent of their evil. However, the blessing of the coatl intervened, and I came out good instead of evil but with the powers the demons had given me, and I woke up a lvl 18 warlock. Needless to say, busting out of there was fun as an amnesiac.

I'll bet, Octavius! A level 18 warlock! I'll bet you rocked...

And the first time playing as a warlock, too. Evard's Black Tentacles is fun against level 2 warriors that try to run away, and repulsive blast is fun against those that try to charge. :evillaugh

remember mostly ALL classes should be modified for a warforged, but my group is trying it out without adjustment for now. we have an artificer druid and sorcerer, so he has to stick to melee, except for Bloodblade or whatever the spell is. warforged annoy me greatly as a GM, i think the half-orc was a good enough smasher.

Why?

Yeah, I don't get that either?

I was using a warlock as an NPC to help out my party of three in the current game I'm running. He was pretty sick. The Eldritch Blast is just an amazing thing. I also gave him the Hellfire Warlock PrC from Tyrants of the Nine Hells. He does sick-sick damage. Complete Mage also has some other great PrC's for the Warlock. They really are an amazing class.

As for the Duskblade being broken; I'd say hardly. Its pretty easy to break ANY class. I have a friend in my current game that tweaked the heck out of his druid and nearly made the entire party useless. I have another who made a rogue a god. With enough time and the right resources, a decent player could easily break a class. There are so many options out there now feat-wise its almost impossible not to have a character that's broken jus' a lil'.

Then again, its all up to the control of your DM. Discussions with your players on what's cool and not-cool can help bring a game under control. I really dislike seeing controlling GM's on these boards screaming, "THAT'S BROKEN!" People are so worried about things getting out of control; frankly that's when my group has the most fun. Usually it breaks whatever scenario I had setup for the night and I end up having to do something on the fly, but hey, that's DMin'.

I'm trying a warforged wizard in our next game we plan to have going soon. It works out quite nicely. The warforged are a great edition to the game. My next character, if we ever make it to a 3rd game, will totally be a warforged duskblade.

Heh, when I was designing my warlock, I was thinking about going duskblade instead. Would've been fun, but it wasn't... inate enough. Monk or warlock were the options I gave myself, and blasting things was more fun than beating up on them. (What's this? I've just maximized, quickened and empowered my blast? Twice in one round?) After my aasimar cleric, I'm definitely going duskblade. Warforged duskblade.

My point of contention is that they get more spells known/per day than a sorcerer, which is just funky IMO. Granted, most of these spells are 0-level, but it's the theme that bothers me. I would probably allow the class sans 'Arcane Attunement.'

Frankly I like it when characters optimize their crap to break stuff and anti them up as powerful as they can. The stronger they are the stronger the opponents I can send against them and frankly when they can do totally awesome crap I really start to think of the setting as getting epic.

I honestly don't know why so many people think duskblades are overpowered. They are very good indeed but only in low-to-mid levels, when combos like blade of blood+shocking grasp channeled through the weapon can deal pretty serious damage. But, past level 7-8, anything a duskblade can do, a decent gish can do better,as the duskblade lacks the more useful (de)buff spells that are a gish's bread and butter, like haste, slow, poymorph, draconic might, mirror image, displacement, tenser's transformation etc.

As to the topic of warforged duskblade, I have to say I like the idea. And I would allow repair spells to be added to the duskblade spell list. This would make a warforged duskblade somewhat more powerful than a flesh-and-blood one, but ,at least in my group, would contribute to it's balance. In the group I play in most people find artificer boring and most warforged characters have significant problems finding reliable healers (cleric/druid cures are pretty much a waste, and wizards only grudgingly assume the role of healers) beside taking artificer levels themselves or getting an artificer cohort.

LOL Yes, I know what you mean. In my current game, all of the characters are about level 16, tweaked to the max, and broker than broken. They were gettin' all snooty that they were beatin' stuff like it was butter. So I was like, "Fine! An army of devils!!"

"We already beat one of those!"

"AND, a Hellfire Engine!"

"What...?"

Yeah, that was a fun night.

 Not saying the duskblade is overpowered, and I DO prefer players to optimize their characters. I just feel, from a designer's POV, that at early levels duskblades have too much magic compared to the core spellcasters (who are also 100% less effective in melee). I do not want to DM in a game involving a sorcerer (whose claim to fame is having tons of spell slots) and a duskblade, and having to explain to the sorcerer that yes, the guy who has just as many skill points and better fighting skills can also actually cast more arcane spells per day than him. In a game where niche protection is considered important, they sort of abandoned that with the DB for whatever reason.

I think the above poster has a point here: duskblade is a class that scales badly. They are pretty powerful in early levels, but they tend to drop quite fast in power and utility. I have played half of a campaign (lvl. 1-12) in the party with a duskblade. In the beginning he was among the most powerful characters in the party, but past level 10, we were like: 'Ok, I'll go and engage that guy in melee, you hold off the rest, you move for flanking, you two nuke the hell out go them, duskblade, dunno, just do whatever you wish'.
