Duskblades in House Deneith [Archive] - Wizards Community

10-08-07, 01:22 PM I have a player who's creating a Deneith Duskblade with the Mark of Sentry. He's interested in being from a Dragonmarked House while playing a martial character that has some arcane abilities. I like the idea, but I feel like there's something I'm not considering with the combination of Deneith and duskblade. I typically associate duskblades with Aundair and the elves (maybe even drow).

What are some of your thoughts regarding the idea?

Being professional soldiers Deneith probably has weapons masters fro every conceivable weapon. They know how to fight like a Valenar, they know how to fight like a Dhakaani, they know how to fight like Aundair. They've spent centuries traveling around the Five Nations, they know how everyone fights. They have mercenaries from Aundair, Breland, Cyre, Karrnath, Thrane, Mror Holds, Lhazaar Principalities, The Eldeen Reaches, The Shadow Marches, etc etc etc.

10-08-07, 07:58 PM Just use the mechanics. A guy who wears heavy armor and casts spells in Eberron could be from plenty of places.

I don't see straight up Duskblades working as well for Eberron Elves and Drow anyway. The medium and heavy armor would be wasted on the Valenar and Drow, who tend to prefer light armor and hit and run tactics. The lack of skill points has to hurt too. If they were amongst the Aerenal, I'd see them more as ceremonial soldiers.

I really do see it as more of a Deneith, Aundairan, or Karrnathi thing. Guys in heavy armor with shields wielding magical powers.

10-08-07, 10:45 PM Cool, thanks for the replies, guys. These are all pretty good justifications. I didn't know if I should treat Deneith as strictly martial with no casting, but having dragonmarks should give them some amount of interest in magic at least. Thus, duskblades aren't too far fetched.

Deneith is interested in anything that lets them win. With the role magic plays on the battlefield having arcane mastery is mandatory. They'll tend towards evokers and warmages etc. of course but they don't just ignore magic.

10-09-07, 09:56 AM Think of them as Blackwater, they hire a lot of 'retired' Soldiers, for much better pay.

Therefore you could have an heir learn practically any combat style they wanted.

I certainly see that class very appropriate for the bearers of the Mark of Sentinel. The dragonmark is, by nature, magical. And members of the house are, by nature, martial. So there you go.

Actually, I don't know any fraction that isn't at least somewhat interested in magic in Eberron. DMed Houses certainly are.
