| JulesCARV05-06-07, 11:30 PM | I'm just curious: do unicorns in Eberron retain their inherent tendencies toward goodness, like standard MM unicorns, as archons, guardinals, demons, devils, and other outsiders have in Eberron? Or do they have unpredictable alignments, more like chromatic and metallic dragons? What about pegasuses? |
| TheAnthroDM05-06-07, 11:38 PM | I would say they are inheretly good, because of the Magic Circle. |
| Salathiel05-06-07, 11:42 PM | Demons and devils have inherent tendencies towards goodness? :P Seriously, though, I don't remember seeing any references to unicorns in any of the books I've read. I would take this to mean that you are free to interperet the unicorns in any way you see fit. If it were up to me, I would keep them good. It's more consistant with both core D&D and real-world mythology that way. -Sal. |
| JulesCARV05-07-07, 12:00 AM | I guess scheming, noir unicorns just aren't in the cards, then :). |
| taski05-07-07, 12:42 AM | On the other hand, it would throw your players for a loop. |
| Rerecros05-07-07, 04:00 AM | Eberron Unicorns are totally shifty, just don't let them take you to candy mountain. (if you didn't get this you probably haven't seen "charlie the unicorn") |
| shadowpavement05-07-07, 07:33 AM | Oh jeez! That's all sharn needs, a unicorn organlegging ring  |
| Bluebrush05-07-07, 07:52 AM | I'd suggest that whatever society exists amoung them tends to drive them toward good ideals. The inherent spell like abilities suggest some inherent goodness, but even outsiders can deviate from their inherent alignment. |
| The Ubbergeek05-07-07, 09:51 AM | Note - in some book, there was a Dark unicorn monster... In FR and such world, their explication was a creation of a dark power as a sort of parody - polar opposite of them. They would fit nicely in Eberron. |
| Arcane Guyver05-07-07, 11:56 AM | A varient 'Dark Unicorn' that blasts people with lightning would be pretty cool...but, regardless, regular unicorns might as well have the 'good' subtype since it wouldn't make any sense to have them go evil. |
| LucyWanabe05-07-07, 02:24 PM | Yep, there is an evil unicorn in FR--the Black Unicorn, a race of unicorn that was created by dark powers. or, if you want an evil intelligent horse race in Eberron, I'd say shoot for using nightmares (my favorite "evil" mounts). :) |
| iKitten05-07-07, 03:05 PM | Devicorn? Demicorn? Wait, I know... Yugocorn. |
| ChimericalWolf05-07-07, 08:38 PM | Alignment Outsiders are generally exempt from "Eberron Grey" morality because of what they are...physical embodyments of alignments. An elf can be evil, but it's still flesh and bone and mind. A demon _is_ evil, a metaphysical force manifested. The unicorn isn't. The unicorn is a magical horned horse. It doesn't have the Good subtype. Indeed, I've always associated the Unicorn to the Fae. And if anything could twist around morallity, it's the Fae. |
| Balseraph05-07-07, 08:55 PM | Anything with sapience and free will can be of any alignment at all in my Eberron game. So yeah, dark unicorns ahoy! While still beautiful and glossy and white of course. Evil that looks evil isn't much use now, is it? ;) |
| Euangelion05-07-07, 09:22 PM | The theme of their statted abilities assumes an inherent degree of goodness. However, there's the "always chaotic" part of their alignment, which could be dropped, perhaps leaving us with "usually good(any)." To go a little further, in my mind the unicorns of Eberron tend to have strong attachments to the planes, in particular their manifest zones. The standard unicorn is closely associated with Irian (thus the elven paladin 5th level racial substitution level ability, specifically for Aerenal elves). Many other unicorns are associated with Thalanis and Lamannia. The dreaded grey unicorn, feared for its ability to poison others with just the touch of its pale, bone-white horn, is associated with Mabar. Rumors speak of a winged unicorn associated with Syrania, but even House Vadalis laughs at such thoughts (officially, at least). The unicorn's spell-like and other abilities could be adjusted accordingly. A Thalanian unicorn may produce a magic circle against law instead of against evil, and could use charm person rather than cure light wounds as a spell-like ability, (though they could still cure moderate wounds once a day if the mood strikes them). They often are chaotic neutral, and some half-fey Thalanian unicorns are known to exist. Grey unicorns can use poison instead of neutralize poison plusinflict spells instead of cure spells as spell-like abilities, produce a magic circle against good, and tend towards neutral evil. Lamannian unicorns would be strong candidates for the woodling template, and would tend towards neutral good. While they produce no magic circle effect, they can speak with plants at will. Despite their varied abilities, very little distinguishes the appearance of one kind of unicorn from another. Even the horn of the grey unicorn appears to be very similar to the horns of the others. It takes a DC 20 Knowledge (nature) or Knowledge (the planes) check to identify the plane a unicorn is associated with, unless it has a template with obvious features, such as the butterfly wings of the half-fey unicorn. No matter what plane their associated with, most unicorns prefer to live in a secluded wilderness setting, preferably near an appropriate manifest zone. They tolerate humanoids living near or even with them, provided they show a certain level of devotion to the unicorns and their ideals. (This is represented by the Beast Totem (unicorn) feat. The protective benefit of the feat is the same no matter which kind of unicorn the character is devoted to.) However, a certain percentage of all kinds of unicorns will develop a wanderlust, leaving their homes to travel across the lands, sometimes even seeking out a worthy humanoid for whom to serve as a mount. This wandering quality is why House Orien selected the unicorn as its symbol. Not that I think about unicorns a lot. |
| UnderworldLord05-07-07, 10:48 PM | Nicely phrased. I now want a unicorn from risia with evil/chaotic alignment and an ice-like horn and white-blue hair/eyes. Give it something like chill touch instead of cure/inflict, and circle against the appropriate alignment (or perhaps against the element of fire? who knows!). Whole new twist on unicorns, you now have them in any and every flavor. However, I'd probably tie unicorns, being magical beasts, as magically linked to goodness, and thus would probably more often than not be linked to the Eternal Day. The the others would be fun flavor changes from time to time, but I'd probably stick with the most of them being aligned with Irian. |

They make for an interesting and fascinating variant on them. I think I'm going to use some of them in my games. ;) |
