My DM doesn't think that I can just infuse identify on an item and have it work as a normal identify. He says my infusions don't work that way.

I say that since I'm infusing identify onto an item, that it should work as the normal spell and let me identify the item.

I mean, what else could I do? Infuse identify onto my belt and then identify an item?

I'm having trouble understanding why it wouldn't just work if cast directly onto the item to be identified.

Other infusions that are like PH spells I understand. But Identify seems a bit different. You're not enhancing an item or putting an infusion into something a person can use (in the case of bull's strength).

Could someone help this first time artificer to wrap her head around how to use this infusion? Or if I'm right, then please help me with an explanation my DM will understand, since he hasn't run an artificer before.

Btw, thanks to the person who wrote the unoffical artificer guide. Most useful.

And thanks for any help.

You infuse the item to be identified as per the identify spell's description (http://www.d20srd.org/srd/spells/identify.htm). the target of identify is "One touched object." This is the assumption presented in the ECS as it has no exceptions for the infusion.

I can't remember off the top of my head if the Artificer gets Identify as a straight infusion, or if you're using Spell Storing Infusion, so I'll just answer both.

If its a straight Identify infusion, yes, it works exactly like the Identify spell. No ifs ands or buts about it.

If its a spell storing infusion being used for Identify, then the answer is still yes, it works exactly like the Identify spell, because it *IS* the Identify spell. But if its a spell storing infusion, you don't need to infuse the item you want to identify, any item will do (since you're turning that item effectively into a single charge wand), but its just good fluff to infuse the item you want to identify directly.

Either way, yes, the end result is that you get an Identify spell that is 100% the same as what a Wizard casts.

Yep, it's on the infusion list.

Thanks for the help guys.
