I do not recall Secrets of Sarlona making any mention of the gem dragons, and I do not know if there have been any threads on this topic recently, so...

Today, or rather, just now, I was considering that it would be interesting if gem dragons were perhaps residents of the dreamspace that envelopes Eberron.

Their function would be similar to the dragons of Argonessen; they scour the dreamspace in search of signs of the Draconic Prophecy. Or, perhaps, they actually help in giving dreams tied to the Prophecy.

I think I would perhaps leave the true origin of the gem dragons as one of the " Great Mysteries " , though they would be related (thematically) in some fashion to the dragons that already exist.

Maybe the dreanspace itself is tied somehow to the Prophecy. As the " Great Event or Truth " that drove the Progenitor Dragons to fight draws near, their minds begin to awaken from the slumber, and so the dreamspace has become accessible once more.

In any case, those were just a few ideas, to see what others think...

The problem is that the dream realm, Dal Quor, is already pretty populated with unfriendly Quori.

I think Crystal Dragons could definitly have a place in Argonessan though.

I don't think Kaodi was referring to Dal Quor, but rather the Dreamspace, which to quote SoS pg 18, "Though powered in some way by Dal Quor, the dreamspace is a Material Plane effect. It is not simply a manifestation of the Region of Dreams, nor is it directly connected to the dreamscapes that ring Dal Quor..." Two different things.

I have never thought of the Dreamscape as an actual locale, but rather as an energy manifestation; your interpretation is interesting, but basically adds a new Plane of existence for which there is already a correlate. That being said, perhaps Gem Dragons exist on Dal Quor (I have never liked the idea that the whole of Dal Quor is hairy with evil Quori; there are likely to be other species in existence!), and are powerful enough to have resisted the periodic "transitions" that occur in this plane. They form a divergent group from the Dragons of Argonnessen, with different motives and interests, and are perhaps responsible for the evolution of the Dreamscape on the Material Plane?

Just my thoughts....

Is this Dreasmcape/Dreamspace in the same context as Dreamscapes in Heroes of Horror? I remember thinking about that similarity when I first read Secrets of Sarlona, but I've yet to really dig deeper than that first thought.

The dreamspace is seperate from Dal Quor, it is a Material Plane effect. While it certainly has something to do with the connection between Eberron and Dal Quor, no one, including the Quori, seem to exactly sure what the deal is.

That is why I proposed that the gem dragons reside there, hidden away, where they can have their own little corner of the setting while cutting down on the possible overcrowding of too many true dragon types, depending on how many one allows.

Notably, their affinity to the inner planes would be replaced by an affinity to the dreamspace. Perhaps they could travel into the outer regions of Dal Quor, bust most of their time would be spent trying to glean information from the connection of mortal minds to that dark plane, from the safety of their own little sanctuary.

Perhaps the dreamspace has some sort of connection to the Ring of Siberys, as the dreamspace is not limited to Sarlona. Both the Ring and dreamspace " surround " Eberron, and Siberys shards are of course useful tools for those skilled in psionics.

The ring of Siberys could also be analogous to Sardior who, according to Sardorian beleifs, exists in a ruby castle that orbits the world. In other words, just as the draconic pantheon is reflected in constellations, Sardior could be reflected in a specific section of the Ring of Siberys. *shrug* Just a thought.

i think the gem dragons would just be another facet of the already rich dragon culture. While there origins are in the dreamscape or even Dal Qour itself this would have been long ago in a previous age of the plane. It is far more likely that the dragons left at this time and have long since joined the kin on argossen

Please tell me that was intentional. :P

Really, it depends on whether you perceive Argonessen as a melting-pot of limitless dimensions, or if you perceive adding too many types into there as possibly overcrowding. I thought that perhaps by segregating them, to an extent, that it would actually be notable to say " We met a green dragon. " or " We met an emerald dragon. " versus " We met a dragon. " . Merely distinguishing what kind of dragon you met can in itself evoke completely different ideas, if you give each of them their own place, rather than making them share a single role.

I had another idea regarding the Gem Dragons; perhaps they are the result of Quori capture/seduction/corruption/possession of young dragons to produce powerful draconic agents loyal to Il-Lashtavar. The dragons of Argonessen would no nothing of this novel manipulation, as Sarlona has proven to resist much of their divinations and the Draconic Prophecy is surprisingly mum regarding the continent as a whole. The Dreamspace is a newly-recognized phenomenon, according to the book; perhaps it is an unforeseen byproduct of the separation of draconic consciousnesses from their bodies?
