| Omnirahk, half-Rahkshi03-08-07, 06:01 PM | So, first off, it's a prestige class for aberrant marked hexblades. I am intentionally staying away from aberrant mark = influenced by Khyber. The Hexmarked are mostly really mad over the War of the Marks, seeking vengeance. Equal rights. That sorta thing. Second, yes, hexblade combat style makes them ideal pirates. Let's get those jokes out of the way now. "Hex marks the spot." "Curses like a sailor." Etc. Now to the good stuff. HEXMARKED Seamus entered his dank room with an armful of his eldritch components. He went to work, muttering his usual tirade. "Murderers. All of them. A genocide, that's what it was. And for what? A birthmark? The Houses will pay. Vengeance!" The newly created being bowed to him, a dark companion in the form of living dragomark. "We shall have our vengeance." -- Seamus the Marked, militant equal rights activist/terrorist. Hexmarked possess combine their mark and rage at injustices against them to empower their curses. Hit Die: d10 Prerequisites To qualify to become a Hexmarked, a character must fulfill the following criteria. BAB: +5 Feats: Aberrant Dragonmark, Empower Curse Skills: Knowledge (Arcana) 7 ranks Special: Hexblade's Curse class feature Skills As Hexblade. Hit Dice: d10 BAB Fort Ref Will Abilities 1. +1 +0 +0 +2 Improved Hex, Aberrant Heir 2. +2 +0 +0 +3 Bonus Feat +1 Caster Level 3. +3 +1 +1 +3 Marked Grace 4. +4 +1 +1 +4 Bonus Feat +1 Caster Level 5. +5 +1 +1 +4 Mark of Doom 6. +6 +2 +2 +5 Bonus Feat +1 Caster Level 7. +7 +2 +2 +5 Mark of Curses 8. +8 +2 +2 +6 Bonus Feat +1 Caster Level 9. +9 +3 +3 +6 Necrotic Mark 10. +10 +3 +3 +7 Accursed Critical +1 Caster Level Class Features The following are class features of the Hexmarked prestige class. Weapon and Armor Proficiency: A hexmarked gains no proficiencies with any weapons, armor, or shields. Spellcasting: At the indicated levels a hexmarked gains new spells and spells per day as if he had also gained level as a hexblade. Improved Hex: Hexmarked class levels stack with hexblade when determining daily uses of Hexblade's Curse, penalties imposed, and the effective spell level of your Dark Companion, if you have one. Aberrant Heir: The effective caster level of your dragonmark spell-like abilities equals your hexmarked level + your hexblade level + 1/2 your other class levels. Effectively you count your hexmarked levels twice in determining your caster level. Bonus Feat: At the indicated levels, you gain a bonus feat. The feat chosen must posses one of the following as prerequisites: - Hexblade's Curse class feature - any true or aberrant dragonmark - Aberrant Dragonmark Marked Grace: You gain a bonus on all saving throws equal to your CHA modifier. Mark of Curses: If you possess a lesser aberrant dragonmark, add Bestow Curse to the list of spell-like abilities it grants. In addition, you gain an extra daily use of all dragonmark spell-like abilities. Mark of Doom: If you possess a lesser aberrant dragonmark, add Mark of Doom to the list of spell-like abilities it grants. This functions as the spell Mark of Doom (PH2), except it can also target any dragonmarked character, regardless of alignment. In addition, you gain an extra daily use of all dragonmark spell-like abilities. Necrotic Mark: If you possess a greater aberrant dragonmark, add Enervation to the list of spell-like abilities it grants. In addition, you gain an extra daily use of all dragonmark spell-like abilities. Accursed Critical: When you score a critical hit and you still have a daily use of Hexblade's Curse, you bestow negative levels equal to your critical multiplier. A successful Fortitude save (DC = 10 + 1/2 hexmarked class level + CHA) halves these negative levels. By expending a daily use of your dragonmark, you increase the save DC (1 for least, 2 for lesser, 3 for greater). EDIT: I'm now beginning to reconsider most of these features. Part of the balance was having to sink feats in Aberrant Mark feats, but the bonus feats more than make up for that. It seems right now that it gives much more than it gives up. It's not like the hexblade is a decent caster anyway. This class basically changes the hexblade from a base class gish to a warrior with some supernatural tricks. I'm considering an alternative stat up for the class now. Fewer bonus feat (none?). Remove Marked Grace (might be much anyway). Gain the ability to expend daily dragonmark uses to up the Hexblade's Curse DC, as Accursed Critical does. I'm also considering an aberrant mark prestige class for spell thieves. Steal a daily use of a true dragonmark and gain the ability to disguise your mark as that mark. Might make a better feat though. Maybe if I throw in Favored Enemy (True Dragonmarked). Although that could work better as a hexmarked feature. Use that instead of any remaining bonus feats. Any thoughts on any of these ideas appreciated. |
| Omnirahk, half-Rahkshi03-12-07, 10:53 PM | So . . . um . . . :bump: |
| Adrez Nesnsid03-15-07, 12:45 PM | Interesting concept  |
| bhasu03-15-07, 01:04 PM | and here i thought i was fairly original with my Aberrant Marked Helf-elf hexblade, Lucian... :( |
| Omnirahk, half-Rahkshi03-16-07, 12:58 PM | It's not a cliche yet or anything. I was actually worried it was too specific an idea. |
| bhasu03-16-07, 03:30 PM | i had thet feeling too. So there are at least 2 out there. |
| Omnirahk, half-Rahkshi03-16-07, 04:19 PM | Well, if you're playing an aberrant marked hexblade, would you be willing to test out the class? If your DM approves of course. And if he/she doesn't, I'll have some answer as the balance. As is, I'm just a tad unsure of so many bonus feats, as well as what just one level does to aid a hexblade: changes save negates to save half. Mind you, the hexblade ought to have had that to begin with, but that's a powerful dip. Back to the feats: I do sorta like having them as is. Between that and the half caster progression, it changes the hexblade to more what I like: a warrior with a tad of the supernatural, rather than a true gish. Let's not forget that it finally gives you a hexblade with Bestow Curse. Again, thanks for any and all feedback. Thank you bhasu. Thank you Adrez Nesnsid. |
| yrogerg03-16-07, 10:33 PM | I'm also considering an aberrant mark prestige class for spell thieves. Steal a daily use of a true dragonmark and gain the ability to disguise your mark as that mark. Seems a bit narrow for a prestige class, especially since Spellthieves normally gain the ability to steal spell-like abilities (which Dragonmark abilities are) at level 5, and most prestige class entry requirements are aimed at 5th or 6th-level characters.. |
| bhasu03-17-07, 12:31 AM | I would have to talk with him, and as Lucian is still young, it would be a lil way off, but i will look into it. |
| taski03-17-07, 02:58 AM | I've got an aberrant-marked spellthief, so at least I would be interested in seeing that PrC. Possible abilities: Can use stolen spells/SLAs to activate own aberrant mark. Can heighten/maximize/etc. aberrant mark if using a stolen dragonmark power (better results from stronger d'marks). Can detect & identify dragonmarks within 30 ft. Sneak attack progression and aberrant mark progression, but no/slow spell progression. Possible flavor: House Tarkanan Assassin Prophecy Siphon (hunted by the Chamber) Anti-House, Nationalistic Spy |
| Omnirahk, half-Rahkshi03-18-07, 08:06 AM | Thanks for the thoughts on the aberrant marked spellthief. Currently I'm imagining a spy/sabateur type class. Class abilities help infiltration-style work. Steal spell-like ability is definitely a prereq. Which is high-level for Eberron, so I guess it'll be a relatively powerful PrC. I'm thinking I might want to draw on the Ebon Saint for inspiration. You know, steal a use of a true dragonmark and gain various benefits at impersonating a member of that house. Starting with the ability to disguise your aberrant mark as a true mark. Which would end if you use the stolen SLA. Then the ability to lose a spell/SLA usage/action point to use the stolen dragonmark power/other dragonmark powers within the house, while keeping the stolen one in reserve. Maybe the ability to deal non-lethal damage with sneak attacks. Definitely the ability to whipe you from the mind of your victim. Can't have him/her passing on your presence to the House. And if you're constantly disguising yourself as members of the Dragonmarked Houses, the class should grant the ability to shapechange/ignore penalties to disguise based on race. And thanks bhasu. I appreciate a playtest. Even if it'll take a while. |
| yrogerg03-18-07, 09:47 AM | Thanks for the thoughts on the aberrant marked spellthief. Currently I'm imagining a spy/sabateur type class. Class abilities help infiltration-style work. Steal spell-like ability is definitely a prereq. Which is high-level for Eberron, so I guess it'll be a relatively powerful PrC. Again, not really. *Most* PrCs have 5th or 6th level entry requirements. I'm thinking I might want to draw on the Ebon Saint for inspiration. You know, steal a use of a true dragonmark and gain various benefits at impersonating a member of that house. Starting with the ability to disguise your aberrant mark as a true mark. I.E, a bonus to a disguise check? Which would end if you use the stolen SLA. Then the ability to lose a spell/SLA usage/action point to use the stolen dragonmark power/other dragonmark powers within the house, while keeping the stolen one in reserve. Maybe the ability to deal non-lethal damage with sneak attacks. Definitely the ability to whipe you from the mind of your victim. Okay, so Modify Memory is bards only. Still, given what you're giving up... Can't have him/her passing on your presence to the House. And if you're constantly disguising yourself as members of the Dragonmarked Houses, the class should grant the ability to shapechange/ignore penalties to disguise based on race. Again, another bonus to disguise. Not that the class isn't an interesting idea, but if you're forgoing levels at least 6-10 of Spellthief, it should probably be a bit more potent, or possibly go in a more radically different direction from the base class. |
| Omnirahk, half-Rahkshi03-18-07, 09:38 PM | Which would be one reason I don't have a first draft up yet - not too much other than a bonus to disguise and Modify Memory. I need more to give it. Though I suppose being able to give up daily uses of your your SLAs to continue using true mark SLAs - including ones you haven't stolen yet - is quite interesting. Imagine: knock a low-ranking (least marked) d'Cannith, and being able to use this class to use any of the House's SLAs, so long as you've got the right level (least, lesser, greater) SLA to burn. Which would require lesser and greater aberrant dragonmarks - Dragonmarked. It might be a decent place to introduce Favored Enemy: Dragonmarked characters/House. Still, the Aberrant Marked Infiltrator is likely a 5 or 3 level PrC, not full 10. Also, I am aware most PrCs have level 5 or 6 entry requirements. But Eberron does work at lower levels than most settings, and IIRC introduced PrCs that could be entered by level 3. As for the Hexmarked, does everyone agree with bonus feat progression? Or am I giving too much in comparison to what's lost? I did after all noticeably improve hexblade's curse. Omni P.S. Of course there'll be progression of sneak attacks and what you can steal. Probably one lost caster level. |
| bhasu03-20-07, 11:33 AM | I think it looks good, as I like what a Hex curse does, but i think it does lack some Flavor elements. For instance my hexblade lucian's mark does cause fear. And the way i write him, his Mark abilities and Hex abilities are almost indistinguishable, as they are both a part of him. I think a lot of abilities should be tied to a progressing theme. I do that anyway, so who knows. Also, my charachter Bhasu is a Lurk/Ebon Saint and i like the idea of taking a spell-thief that direction. The L/ES direction is a fun way to play a rogue type. Technically, Bhasu has only been in combat 3 times, and none of them have been technically fair fights anyway. He shot on guy in his story, earlier on, he shot someone in the back for his guild, and i think the other time, he mind-wiped the guy and left. The idea of the non-lethal dmg. opens up a lot of options. Most of what bhasu does is sneak in, gather info and leave. Or steal things and leave. Or sabotage things and leave. He is rather non-confrontational. A non-psionic version of that class would be cool, and i think a spell-thief is a good direction to go towards it with. |
| taski03-20-07, 05:47 PM | I'd like that sneaky, non-violent direction for the aberrant-marked spellthief prc. My own spellthief is a cat burglar who avoids killing people. Non-lethal damage for sneak attacks would be very nice. Would it be possible to steal magic with a totally non-damaging sneak attack? Maybe the option to put a slight of hand check on top of that sneak attack, so that your target doesn't even know who stole from him. |
| Omnirahk, half-Rahkshi03-22-07, 09:05 AM | Thanks for the advice. I'll definitely add non-lethal sneak attacks and slight of hand to disguise them. I really am going for an infiltrator/sabateur anyway. No need to kill there. Bodies complicate things. As for the hexmarked, I think mark of curses, mark of doom, and necrotic mark add some real flavor. They're hexblade-ish, and they are actual dragonmark powers. If anything, accursed critical doesn't fit the overall theme. I had been considering (at a lower level) Favored Enemy: True Dragonmark Bearers. But I didn't want to make a hexblade that's just better against bearers of true dragonmarks, so I ran out of ideas. Any suggestions on tightening the flavor? |
| taski03-22-07, 09:02 PM | I had an idea for the Hexmarked. Cut the bonus feats and provide aberrant mark progression instead. Cleans it up and assures that the Hexmarked can use his class abilities... just in case a numskull doesn't realize he needs the feats. If the Hexmarked is supposed to be getting vengeance against dragonmarked houses, maybe he could curse dragonmarks themselves to turn into dangerously cursed marks. The cursed marks could even be different depending on the origional mark... like a Lyrandar would be cursed to be struck by lightning.. or a Vadalis to be attacked by animals. |
| Omnirahk, half-Rahkshi03-23-07, 08:40 AM | By aberrant mark progression you just mean the feats "Lesser Aberrant Dragonmark" and "Greater Aberrant Dragonmark," right? And brilliant, cursing dragonmarks. I fear it might limit the class to villainous NPCs and dragonmark-heavy games though. You know, the class features wouldn't see reliable use, so they might not be worth the investment. That said, I see two ways to work the curse. Either advantageous to battle: near instant animal attacks and lightning strikes, or ones that attack the dragonmark as a business. Cannith would say deal 1d6 points of damage to whatever is being worked on with a craft check. That would slow down production and waste resources, even if it doesn't immediately wreck the item. Let's see what I can come up with: Vadalis: (offensive) attacked by animals. Works as Summon Nature's Ally (I for least, III for lesser, V for greater, VII for Siberys); (trade) 40% chance of a handle animal check making the animal 1 step more agressive Lyrandar: (offensive) 1 point electricity damage every round, ignoring any resistances; (trade) 40% chance of causing bad/dangerous weather when trying to only bring a light drizzle Cannith: (offensive) 40% chance of any UMD check resulting in a mishap; (trade) whenever you make a craft check, you deal damage to what you're making or the tools (50% either), (1d6 for least, 1d8 lesser, 2d6 greater, 2d8 siberys) Deneith: (offensive) -2 attack, -1 damage, critical miss on natural 1 or 2; (trade) 40% chance of losing the protectee or failing a necessary spot check, etc. (40% chance of seriously screwing up the job, but not beyond recovery) Ghallanda: (offensive) Fort save (DC 10+ class level + CHA) or become exhausted; (trade) 40% chance of anyone staying at their Ghallanda inn suffering from the effects of a Nightmare spell, as if cast by the hexmarked as a dragonmark ability. Since the hexmarked does know which guests are being targeted (but will likely know some), apply will save modifiers as if you have secondhand knowledge of all targets. Jorasco: 40% of any healing instead being damage. (this seems equally offensive and trade. I may want to break the mold and make it a lesser percent. I don't want to kill to many people) Kundarak: (offensive) um . . . ; (trade) 40% chance of letting the wrong person in or otherwise causing financial problems for someone's account Medani: (offensive) um . . . ; (trade) 40% chance of getting a wrong answer with any divination Orien: 40% chance of a teleportation mishap Phiarlan/Thuranni: (offesnive) when using the dragonmark ability, suffer the effects of a Glitterdust spell, as if cast by the hexmarked as a dragonmark ability; (trade) 40% chance of the use of dragonmark ability being accompanied by a loud boom: listen check DC 25 to locate the square they are in (screwing up performances and assassinations. Also could be handy if they try to hide from PCs) Sivis: (offensive) um . . . ; (trade) 40% chance of a severe mistranslation Tharask: (offensive) um . . . ; (trade) 40% chance of getting a wrong answer to divination (poor humans and half orcs. They're lost in the wilderness :weep: ) I'm thinking invoking the offensive curse would be like akin to a regular hexblade's curse (and takes a usage). Invoking the trade curse also requires a use, but lasts one day. After laying the initial curse, it can be reinvoked at the beginning of each day at any distance. Successful saves three days in a row or a remove curse spell severe this ability, requiring the curse to again be laid up close and personal. I really like this. Seriously, what could screw with a business more than unhappy customers and general unreliability. Any thoughts? Should the percentages vary at all? Is any curse too weak/too strong in comparrison? And the houses I couldn't come up with? |

| gelalshawr04-24-07, 02:25 PM | Ok, I'm just curious, I thought i had most of the Eberon books, but I've never seen A "Lesser Aberrant Dragonmark" or "Greater Aberrant Dragonmark", SoI'd like to know what book they are in. |
| FreAkOuTRG04-27-07, 08:15 AM | Ok, I'm just curious, I thought i had most of the Eberon books, but I've never seen A "Lesser Aberrant Dragonmark" or "Greater Aberrant Dragonmark", SoI'd like to know what book they are in.They don't exist as far as I know. |
| Forged_Fury04-27-07, 08:25 AM | Surprisingly enough, they are found in the book Dragonmarked. :D -FF |
| FreAkOuTRG04-27-07, 08:29 AM | I would see this more as a 5 level PrC, because of it's narrowness. You realize that you can get into this class at level 3, right? I'll bold where I think something should be added. Improved Hex: Hexmarked class levels stack with hexblade when determining daily uses of Hexblade's Curse, penalties imposed, and the effective spell level of your Dark Companion, if you have one.Fine Aberrant Heir: The effective caster level of your dragonmark spell-like abilities equals your hexmarked level + your hexblade level + 1/2 your other class levels. Effectively you count your hexmarked levels twice in determining your caster level.Mostly ok. Bonus Feat: At the indicated levels, you gain a bonus feat. The feat chosen must posses one of the following as prerequisites: - Hexblade's Curse class feature - any true or aberrant dragonmark - Aberrant DragonmarkI think these should be taken out entirely. If you don't though, if a feat has the prerequisite "true dragonmark" the hexmark won't qualify for it. Marked Grace: You gain a bonus on all saving throws equal to your CHA modifier.Fine As a 5 level PrC that can be taken at at 5th level, you could give them lesser aberrant dragonmark and greater aberrant dragonmark at 1st level and 4th level, respectively. |
| FreAkOuTRG04-27-07, 08:30 AM | Surprisingly enough, they are found in the book Dragonmarked. :D -FFAh, not in crystalkeep. Don't have that book. |
| Omnirahk, half-Rahkshi04-27-07, 11:35 AM | You know what? You're right. I'll change it to hexmarked level + 1/2 your other class levels. As for "any true or aberrant dragonmark." Note the phrasing. There are some feats that have that as a prereq rather than just "any aberrant dragonmark." I just want to make it absolutely clear those feats are viable. The prereq is technically different. It doesn't look the wording should imply any feat with the prereq "any true dragonmark." So the wording is fine. And actually, the bonus feats are just filler, since I'm struggling with good class features. So entry is possible at level 3. Well, that's acceptable in Eberron (it wouldn't be the first). Does it seem too early? Should I tighten prereqs to make it accessable at level 5? EDIT: FreAkOuTRG, I presume the bolded "+ your hexblade levels" is a suggested change? I don't see it in my version. |

| Omnirahk, half-Rahkshi04-27-07, 03:46 PM | Ok, I bumped the BAB requirement to +5 and Know (arcana) to 7 ranks. And I added + hexblade levels. Looking back, I think I had meant hexmarked level + 1/2 all class levels (including hexmarked). If I'm recalling correctly, what was I thinking?! Anyway, one of my later posts (# 18) was working on an alternative to bonus feats - a way to alter the curse when used against dragonmarked characters. In that way it's akin to some Hex feats - changing the curse. Basically, it makes the character's mark backfire. I'm trying to create both a business sabatoge and a combat-useful curse. I've a partial list and I'm low on ideas. If I should seriously drop/change that idea, tell me. And oh, sorry about missing you telling me I should add what's bolded. |
| FreAkOuTRG04-27-07, 03:51 PM | No problem. I still think it should be cut back to 5 levels, but otherwise it looks pretty nice. |
| Omnirahk, half-Rahkshi04-27-07, 10:21 PM | I'll consider reshaping it as a 5 level class. But might the capstone ability be too strong for 5 levels? And the alternative curse-like dragonmark abilities might seem counter-intuitive, if the granted benefit isn't available yet (I'll need to check: by 14th level can a character have a greater aberrant dragonmark. Probably can though. In which case, ignore this concern). Also, look at the example character. This class is designed for vengeful people, enraged at the mistreatment and villification of bearers of aberrant dragonmarks. The key thing is obsession. A longer detour (10 levels) fits this theme. :P I will consider 5 levels though. Another thing I had liked about this class was altered focus. With only 5/10 caster level progression, you can't even pretend to be a gish anymore (which the hexblade isn't very effective at). Rather, you're transformed into a warrior with a small list of supernatural (or spell-like) tricks to aid you. Then again, if I wanted to really achieve that, I should've given more class features to support that. Basically emphasize the hex and the mark. EDIT: Woot! This officially marks the first time ever that a topic I started reaches multiple pages! |

| Omnirahk, half-Rahkshi04-30-07, 10:03 PM | And here's the 5 level version. Done this way, I've had to drop Accursed Critical. It might be too good for a 10th level character anyway. If I'm wrong, I may want to consider granting Mark of Doom at the same level as Marked Grace, and shifting everything after to one level earlier. BAB Fort Ref Will Abilities 1. +1 +0 +0 +2 Improved Hex, Aberrant Heir 2. +2 +0 +0 +3 Marked Grace +1 Caster Level 3. +3 +1 +1 +3 Mark of Doom 4. +4 +1 +1 +4 Mark of Curses +1 Caster Level 5. +5 +1 +1 +4 Necrotic Mark The variant I'm unsure of would be: BAB Fort Ref Will Abilities 1. +1 +0 +0 +2 Improved Hex, Aberrant Heir 2. +2 +0 +0 +3 Marked Grace, Mark of Doom +1 Caster Level 3. +3 +1 +1 +3 Mark of Curses 4. +4 +1 +1 +4 Necrotic Mark +1 Caster Level 5. +5 +1 +1 +4 Accursed Critical Class abilities remain unchanged. |

| Runepriest05-27-07, 09:03 PM | another idea for Ghallanda: Member becomes exhausted that cannot be removed through a dragonmark or naturally. |
| DragoonDarkfire05-27-07, 09:36 PM | How about this for Philara/Thurrani? When they activate their mark powers they're affected by a Glitterdust spell. |
| Omnirahk, half-Rahkshi05-27-07, 09:48 PM | Thanks. Added preliminary ghallanda and phiarlan/thuranni curses. I even came up with a trade curse for phiarlan/thuranni. I also entered this in a competition (see the Classes and Prestige Classes forum) about evil PrCs. |
