| Khybers_Hunger04-01-07, 01:14 PM | In one of the Dhakaani Dragonshards, it mentions Hobgoblin cavalry...do they ride horses, or what? I'm inclined to believe it has something to do with the cart-pullers on p157 of the Campaign setting. However, I can't figure out what those are either. Any help would be much appreciated. |

I can't recall which book, but use bison for the stats and make the things alot more tempermental. As far as hobgoblin cavalry goes, I don't use it at all. A wolf with advanced hit dice is a large creature so the Dhakaani hobgoblins in my game use the largest of the specimens of the Taarka'khesh breeding programs for riding, but that's mostly just for generals and dignitaries, not the rank and file hobgobs. I know Darth Syntax uses chariots for his Hobs, but I don't recall him ever saying what pulled them. |

| Battlesmith04-01-07, 07:25 PM | While the Tribex is probably the best guess at what they might use, I just advanced Krenshar by a few HD and made them large. Worked for me well enough, and I like the idea of the Hobgoblins getting the Krenshar to strike fear into the hearts of their foes, thus scattering them and giving the more orderly hobgobs the tactical advantage by fighting fleeing foes. Certian types of heavy chariots would be pulled by tribex, although there is a danger in this. For the Dhakaani (espiecially the historical ones) cavalry is a bit of an alien concept. Now, you would have mounted infantry (like the historical dragoons) or war elephants, but you are not going to have a lot of actual cavalry. Non-Dhakaani hobgoblins of more northerly origins (say Karrnath) would ride horses and be outfited as horse archers for the most part. Heavy cavalry was (and is) quite uncommon among my gobinoids. |

Now, you would have mounted infantry (like the historical dragoons) or war elephants, but you are not going to have a lot of actual cavalry. For me the cavalry is limited to the light cavalry of the goblin scouts that fight from the saddle of their wolves individually or in numbers and the assault cavalry of the bugbears mounted on war elephants. While not traditional cavalry, the bugbear use of elephants as a means to move obscene numbers of goblin archers into close combat with enemy positions made their use devastating. In order to stop the rampaging elephant from crushing enemy positions they had to expose themselves to the goblin archers, making the combination attack of the war elephants a favored tactic of both the goblins and bugbears. The goblin wolfpacks didn't form up into the traditional cavalry role easily. Their tactics are the same tactics an individual scout would use in combat, but on the battlefield they would use their speed and manuverability to break up enemy formations so that the light infantry behind could more easily dispatch enemy units as a whole. The wolves themselves would fulfill a role similar to the bugbear in individual combat, keeping an enemy occupied or in most cases flat on it's back while the goblin would proceed to use his spear to finish them off. |
