| Edymnion06-03-07, 07:47 PM | http://www.giantitp.com/comics/oots0459.html It just hit me when I was re-reading this strip. Positive powered undead defenders. "Probably homebrewed or cribbed from another setting". Think that could be one of Rich's subtle jabs at Eberron? |
| AvonRekaes06-03-07, 07:52 PM | Hehe, yeah. Rich and Keith have this pretty humorous rivalry going. In Keith's article for Rich's site, "The Gleaner" he slipped in "Rich doesn't know how to draw anything but crappy stick figures." They are arch-nemesi afterall. (Also, the Sacred Warder is an incorporeal deathless from BoED) |
| OctaviusIII06-03-07, 07:53 PM | The first thing I thought was deathless ghosts! Ahh, OOTS... |
| Edymnion06-03-07, 07:58 PM | (Also, the Sacred Warder is an incorporeal deathless from BoED)Yeah, but you gotta admit that the bit about them being positive powered undead immediantly followed by "cribbed from another setting" sounds like a poke. |
| DragoonDarkfire06-03-07, 08:26 PM | They are arch-nemesi afterall. What would that make Rich? A... Heavenly... Bull? Lion? |
| AvonRekaes06-03-07, 08:38 PM | Celestial Dire Weasel. |
| Edymnion06-03-07, 08:42 PM | What would that make Rich?Second place. ;) (please don't hurt me Rich, we luv you) |
| AvonRekaes06-03-07, 09:10 PM | Second place. ;) Ooooooooooooooh! |
| Antioch06-04-07, 12:32 AM | OoTS made another jab at Eberron in this (http://www.giantitp.com/comics/oots0344.html) strip as well. |

| Bluebrush06-05-07, 04:47 PM | Just as a bit of interesting fun, Rich apparently planned to include an elf culture centred around the undead in his entered campaign setting.Q Originally Posted by Siberys I was scanning aqula.com (http://www.aquela.com/blog/index.html), and I came across a bit of trivia. Is it true that the basic concept for the Aereni (death-revering elves, as you, of course, know) was originally from Rich Burlew's setting? A Yes and no. I still haven't seen Rich's campaign setting myself, and was quite surprised when James made that claim: I still have the document where I wrote about the departure from Xen'drik, the splitting of Elven cultures, and the Undying Court. So my initial reaction to this was "Huh?" - all the more so because I have an enormous amount of respect for Rich, and the last thing I'd want to do was take credit for one of his ideas. As soon as I saw this I wrote to Chris Perkins and James (and Rich) and said "What?" Short form? Aerenal culture is something that evolved after Eberron was chosen, for a variety of reasons: the original world was too large, and many ideas were condensed together in the brainstorming process. Other ideas emerged in that process: the halflings were nomads, but the idea of them riding dinosaurs actually came from those sessions. In those conversations, the idea came up that the elves might have ties to necromancy, which worked well for me because of the long lifespan of the elves in the first place, because of their magical sophistication, and because it helps to make them alien and strange. From that idea - "Elves and undead" - I've got the series of documents in which I suggest the positive/negative split of the Undying Court vs. the Blood of Vol, the history of the Tairnadal, the role of the Undying Court as gestalt god, etc. So anyhow, seeing James' post, I wrote to WotC and said "Huh?" What Chris (and Rich) said is that Rich's original proposal did have a nation of elves with a strong tie to the undead, and that it was possible one of them had it in mind and said "Hey, how about giving the elves necromancy" in the brainstorming sessions for Eberron. Having now seen it, there are significant differences; Rich's elves are oriented around standard undead (including significant use of mindless skeletons and zombies), and have a traditional god as opposed to the incarnate ancestor-cult of the Undying Court... in some ways they are more like the Blood of Vol than Aerenal. SO: If Rich's world was published tomorrow, you wouldn't say "Hey, that's Aerenal" - and I knew nothing about Rich's setting when *I* developed Aerenal. However, it's fair to say that Aerenal would not exist if not for Rich. Hopefully someday Rich's setting will be published - and then you can see for yourself! |
