actually halfway through a session right now, just wondering what you guys think: Is it out of the question to play a dragon disciple in Eberron?

In my DM's words, I would be "like the friggin pope"

just wondering opinions.

No, it's not unreasonable, unless playing a Seren barbarian is also unreasonable. Tell him to look in the first chapter of the ECS (pg.24) and explain why they even bother listing the PrC there if it has that much potential to break the campaign or setting.

It actually makes a great deal of sense in Eberron, as Sorcerers are typically looking for ways to join the ascended dragon gods and partake of their power. What better path for a martially-inclined Sorcerer to take than Dragon Disciple?

Its up to the DM, really.
Guyver allows it, obviously. I personally don't.

For starters, I don't like how Dragon Disciple was handled as a whole. Far too many caster levels lost for a glorified LA +2 template (yes, I think the half-dragon LA at +3 is too high). Second, I'm rather oldschool in that "Half Dragons in Eberron have prices on their heads". After all, the only other half-dragon mentioned in the setting sparked the genocide of an entire Dragonmarked House.

If I were to allow it (modified to include more caster levels), I would only really do so if I could make a really big deal out of it. The problem there is that it puts the emphasis and focus of the game on one player, which leaves the others feeling left out.

So, I just avoid it altogether and don't allow PCs in Eberron to take that PrC or that template.

Well, :dragon: I hope you've got one of my handy creative excuses listed below:
1. You could be a Seren as noted above.
2. You could be an ancient descendent who wants to know more of his/her ancestors or appreciates worshipping them.
3. You could have found an ancient text of the dragons in Sarlona and be utterly convinced that it is the truth.

I asked this a while ago. And I read the Seren Dragonshard and it said they have Dracolytes, Dragonsong Lyrists, and Dragon Disciples. So I guess it's canon. But you don't have to use them.

To add on to what I put in earlier - The earliest you can get into the DD class is 6th level. You don't gain 'Dragon Apotheosis' until 16th level, at the earliest. In the meantime, the abilities you do get are obtainable in many other ways, like draconic Heritage feats.

Finally, if you want to play a spellcaster who takes on draconic aspects, you should look into the Dragonheart Mage PrC in 'Races of Dragon.' It comes with the additional benefit of not having something as scandalous as 'Dragon Apotheosis' as a capstone ability.

The dragons are not perverted sex fiends in Eberron, they wouldn't be knocking boots with your great great great grandma in the first place. ;)

Eh, I use them the same way divine magic is done in Eberron. You may not have the traditional direct link like in the core rules (literal dragon blood for Draconic Heritage or god-given gifts for Cleric spellcasting), but such things are obtainable due to conviction and the latent magic in the environment. There are other ways to do it, of course - Seren / kobold rituals, gifts from Chamber patrons, etc.

It seems to me that Eberron is a bit dragon-obsessed, making such mechanics plausible. Dragons make up the world, dragonshards enrich it, dragonmarks empower individuals, even the most valuable monetary piece is named after them.
