Lupin are a race that was in a Dragon Magazine a while back. Apparently they are really good at hunting Lycanthropes, Werewolves in particular it seems. Perhaps this could be the kind of race I was thinking of in my other posts. However they aren't really built around redeeming afflicted per say but being able to find them in the first place is a good idea.

So just wonderng where could these guys be found? Off the top of my head I'm thinking Eldeen Reaches, maybe Xen Drik, possibly even Thrane as I could seem them helping kill Lycanthropes during the Purge and a Silver Flame Paladin Lupin sounds interesting, Xen Drik maybe and definitly Lamania? (However it's spelled. The place where the good alinged Lycanthropes went off to.)

Well I'd say Eldeen reaches is the best spot. Xen Drik....well some areas would make since,...but the "normal" jungle-ish area's wouldn't make since for a wolf-based race.

Thrane, honestly, as much as they dislike shifters, with Lupin looking so much more like a Werewolf in Hybird form....don't see that one working well. Now you can still go with them helping in the Purge and all....just not having Thrane has their racial home.

Unfortunately, the thread I started six months ago regarding "Races in the Dragon Compendium" has been erased, and I cannot find any record of it....

Thrane dislikes Lycanthropes, not shifters so much. But then most people dislike Lycanthopes as a whole anyway. I think Lupin still look different than Werewolves? After all if everyone mistook them for Werewolves how could they hunt Lycanthropes in the first place if every idiot with a silver weapon attacked them? I'm sure there is something about them that is decidedly different than a Lycanthrope. For one they DO wear clothes, Lycanthropes tend to shread those when they change. Lycanthropes also act pretty feral in Hybrid form. I do see Eldeen Reaches as a possibility, or Lamania or however it's spelled.

Pick up the novel "Legacy of Wolves" when ya can :) There's a good amount of racial hatred for Shifters around Thrane. Keep two things in mind:

1. It's not the Govn. or Relgion as a whole hates shifters, most of them even regret the Purge and few it has their greatest tragity.

2. But just like anything alone these same lines, you'll have quite many that will retain their old hatreds and pass them to the next race in line,...and has the "Children of the Moontouched",...many could still few shifters as just a slightly more human version of lycanthropes.

It honestly could make for some great story, the Lupid struggling to make the bigotted in Thrane's Gov and church see that they may look like a werewolf, but they aren't werewolves, etc etc.

Regarding shifters, the impression I have is that Thrane doesn't like them, but they don't dislike them more or less than most other nations. The stereotype is one of a half-animal you don't want to have around in a respectable society.

I'd still think that shifters are better of in Thrane than in Aundair, where their links to the Reaches might be considered treacherous. Regarding Aruldusk, the problem is not only so much that they may be linked to werewolves, but that they are nomadic. Few sedentary people have much sympathies for Travellers.

Regarding Lupins, I'd have some ideas.

Lupins are a sort of guardian-spirit from Lamannia, partly responsible for herding the werecreatures. In the days of the Purge, they witnessed both the corruption of lycanthropes and the spread of the curse, and the influx of fugitive werecreatures. The Lupin tribes, who had always kept an eye on the lycanthropes, sent messengers to the Keeper and were at least partially responsible for showing the Silver Flame that afflicted lycanthropes could be cured. The Church accepted their offer of alliance (and some Lupins were converted), and to this day, the Lupins sent their warriors into Eberron to eliminate evil lycanthropes, help good ones, and prevent a similar corruption of the curse to happen ever again. Alternatively, Lupins were uncovered during the Plague by a mission of purified into Lamannia, following ancient leads to a people expert at finding lycanthropes. Many such expeditions were lost, but one eventually found the Lupins. As the Silver Flame guided the Templars to these allies, the Lupins are generally received favourably by those who know about them. Lupins are a fairly young race, created during the Purge from a group of Puritans, who had massacred a fey glade in the Twilight Demesne looking for lycanthropes. A powerful fey curse was levelled against them, transforming them into wolf-creatures. Now they roam the lands either to continue their mission to kill all lycanthropes and fey, hating them for their current affliction. Others have recognised their errors, and are now helping the good weres, in order to redeem themselves. The Church knows of the events, and several of those who spoke up against indiscriminate massacres believe that the Flame itself transformed these fanatics to teach them a lesson. That theory is little accepted, however. Lupins are a race orginating from awakened wolves, which some attribute to ancient experiments of House Vadalis used to stop a pre-Galifarian, largely unrecorded instance of increased lycanthropic activity. The House denies they are their creation. Still, many are found in the Eldeen enclaves and towns of that family, and they serve the House of Handling as soldiers, primarily to patroul the area against lycanthropes. Lupins are the result of early experiments of the Silver Flame to cure the new strains of Lycanthropy. Instead of fully restoring the victims, the earliest attempts created the wolf-like race that Thrane's Puritans now use to claim that nobody can really be cured of all the taint. The moderates recognise that theirs souls, at least, where restored. However, many lupins have never forgiven the lycanthropes for their current fate, and hunt them mercilessly. Others feel that they should try to help the werecreatures, as they are after all in the same situation. Lupins are a natural race that has always dwelled in the Eldeen Reaches, and fought against lycanthropes, guarding the portals to Lamannia much as the Gatekeepers guard those against Xoriat. Lupin tribes come in many flavours: some simply seek to herd lycanthropes back into Lamannia, others try to kill them, and one fortunately small tribe believes that anyone infected with the curse, even if later cured, carries the taint and must be killed, along with their descendants. Perhaps Lupins are also the descendants of failed cures, as in the point above, happening long before the latest Lycanthropic Purge. Lupins are not from the Eldeen Reaches or Lamannia, but from the cold forests of Karrnath. Their trackers and scouts have always been in the service of the lords of that land, who hold the wolf in great honour. Although there was no lycanthropic purge in that region, werecreatures do live in the forests and wide open regions of Karrnath, and the Lupin's traditional hunts against them is part of what caused Karrnath to see the wolf with such great favour. Their protective streak has caused many Lupins to embrace the Silver Flame, however, even if most venerate a version of Balinor.

Those are all very awesome ideas. Not sure which one of those I'd use since they all seem very good.

I as a matter of course have always loved the idea of lupin although their predlication for hunting werewolves never really appealed to me. I am also one of those that considers themselves part of the furry community so the lupin have tremendous appeal to me on that level, especially since I play wolves and other assorted canids. I have an article sitting in my computer in work about making several new races for my fellow furs in D&D in general and Eberron specifically. Among my inspirations for this was Secrets of Xen'Drik.

My own vision for lupins is that they were orginally a kind of uplifting of animals analoging to Painted Wolves or African Wild Dogs in our own world. The giants created them around the same time or just after they made the elves. Like the elves they suffered from the baser appetites of their giant masters. In fact when the revolt came down, the lupin aided the elves in their endeavor and fled with them when the migration to Aerenal occured. But unlike the elves, the lupin deemed Aerenal to be too close to Xen'Drik and traveled on to Khorvaire. Eventually they settled in what is now the Eldeen Reaches. It was here the lupin, who were now evolving into timber wolf like humanoinds fought with the goblinoids to remain free from enslavement by them.

When the purge came around the lupin were still licking their wounds from goblinoids and simply hid from the misguided humans as they took the Flamers. With a little bit of help from the fey but mostly due to their use of magic to coneceal their cities and villages (think Ewok tree villages with larger scale buldings). In fact by and large they avoided contact with the humans until the last war.

By that time they had been in contact with the Wardens and for the most part joined with them. So during the last war the lupin re-emerged to help the Reaches make good on their declaration. Berland and Aundair forces thought them werewolves but soon learned the truth. Although the bulk of lupin ire was spent on goblinoid mercenaries, old war wounds of mutual hatred resurfacing.

Today the lupin are active participants with the Wardens, bolstering their numbers and keeping an ever vigiliant eye on Aundair and Breland for incursions into the Reaches for anything other than trade. Although goblinoids coming in for any reason to be shot and killed first with their spirits interrogated after, maybe. In game mechanics in my Eberron campaigns and most campaigns I petition to join as a lupin ranger in Eberron I switch the bonus from werewolves to goblinoids to represent the centuries running feud and enmity between the two races. And keeping almost everything else save maybe the ride skill, I switch that to a hunting bonus to survival as the lupin are excellant trackers, tracking with the help of scent when they can have that advantage.
