| korcheck03-30-07, 09:21 PM | So, based off a post in one of the threads on here I am trying to create a macguyveresk character without the aversion to killing since he won't be "a war torn vet that had seen to much." My basic template to start with is a bard for skill reasons and the bit of magic they receive. The problem that I am having is that I don't know what skills might best define what he could do. I have started with craft trapmaking and alchemy, what can I add to this or change to fit the profile and what if any might be a good PrC for this? |
| Edymnion03-30-07, 09:27 PM | Honestly, I'd make Macguyver as an Artificer. His juryrigged items would just be the flavor for a spell storing infusion. |
| Ricohard_Draconis03-31-07, 02:48 AM | possibly going into Combat Trapsmith at later levels. |
| korcheck03-31-07, 11:15 AM | What book is combat trapsmith in I have never heard of it before? |
| Edymnion03-31-07, 02:02 PM | Dungeonscape, I believe. |
| Dark Halo03-31-07, 04:58 PM | Actually Combat Trapsmith is in Complete Scoundrel :P |
| Identitystolen03-31-07, 05:09 PM | I was going to say rogue, for generalist skill monkey purposes, but Artificer would work too. |
| korcheck03-31-07, 07:57 PM | dangit guys now look what you've done I went out and had to buy dungeonscape this morning. EDY you owe me $30! JK:D (I really did run out and buy it this morning.) There is a trapmaker prc in the book but I haven't read that far into it yet, so I don't know if it is the one you are talking about or not. You know, I think if I sold all my RPG stuff I could take over a small third world country. But seriously, where's my money? |

If you had wasted money on Complete Scoundral, then you would have the right to be ticked off, because that book is easily one of the worst books WotC has ever written. Its right up there with Races of Destiny and Magic of Incarnum. |
| RogueElement04-02-07, 05:10 PM | I liked Dungeonscape's "old school" dungeon crawling focus (and you can really feel Rich Burlew's influence on the book). Complete Scoundrel also has some good stuff for MacGuyver characters, the Skill Tricks are worth the money right there. I really hope the game writers run with the Skill Tricks and produce lots more in future books. Skill Tricks are perfect for abilities that are too weak for Feats, but too flavorful to be only included in prestige class abilities. |
| Incudine04-03-07, 09:26 AM | I agree with Edymon, Mc Guyver is an artificier with very high int. a Thranish army knife, a rubber band and a paper clip is all the kit he needs :) ... seriously, always use infusion on them: need to blow things up? use the paper clip!! need to heal a companion (thracheotomy?)? use a paper clip!! The airship's elemental is going wild? use a paper clip!! need to take down the enemy from far away? use a paper clip!! (and the rubber band) need to close the portal to xoriat? use a paper clip (and a bit of tape)!! :) Incudine |

I even think that the new core class in it might be a good way to go for my idea. this book has so much good info in it I don't know where to begin. I have so many ideas burning in my head now for a good old fasioned dungeon crawl I don't know what to do. its just to bad I can't put everything in the book into one big dungeon. although what I am thinking is I might put an add in the khorvaire newspaper for "the most dangerous dungeon ever built" and call on all adventurers to test there might against the dungeon of terror or something with a million gold reward for whoever survives it. Of course the betting on this event would be great. my problem now is who would sponsore this epic dungeon event and where would it be located at. Dangit there I go now I have just derailed my own thread lol. |

Of course the betting on this event would be great. my problem now is who would sponsore this epic dungeon event and where would it be located at.Run it like the modern day lottery. Everybody that wants to take a shot at it has to pay a fee. For a hundred gold, you get to take a shot at 1,000 gp worth of treasure, plus half of what everybody else has put in. So, if 50 people have tried to claim the prize without taking it, half of their fees would be added to the pot, making it 3,500 gp worth of treasure, while the people running it have netted themselves 1,500 gp of profit. Make it a long dungeon, with easy obsticals at the beginning, increasing in difficulty as you move deeper in. You make it to a checkmark, you get a smaller prize (that increases in value the farther in you make it), until you get to the big prize at the end. Just set it up that the bulk of people end up paying more in fees than they manage to earn, and you've set up essentially a free money machine, just like the real world lottos. As to who built it, thats easy. Say its set up and maintained by House Kundarak. Not only does that give them plenty of gold to put into the pot in the beginning, but the traps can all be made as a sort of engineering school final exam by Kundarak artificers. You gotta demonstrate your skill at making traps for the guantlet before you're allowed to build traps for defending the real stuff. If you've got ranks within the Kundarak trapsmith structure, then making a trap worthy of a certain spot in the guantlet might be required before you can move up in rank. This would also explain why the traps change periodically. Not only does it keep people from figuring out the early traps and just bypassing them easily the next time, but with so many people going through the tests, they would need to be able to put those traps to the test. Dangit there I go now I have just derailed my own thread lol.Yeah, but its a good derailing :D |
| korcheck04-05-07, 08:55 PM | Ok so if the house is running it then how deadly would you think it is the guys I'm going t run through it will be 11th to 12th lvl. I like the idea but how demented would one of the houses let a dungeon get. Also I imagine the whole thing being broadcast in some way with something like a floating eye following th PC's and being used via a divination spell and then projected into a giant vertical scrying bowl or several smaller ones. Do you think that the other houses or the law of the land would allow this "Blood Sport" style show happen or would it be more of an underground event (bad pun.) |
| Edymnion04-07-07, 07:52 PM | Just make all of the traps Merciful, so they do nothing but non-lethal damage. If you want to make it high level enough, a permanent Contingency Teleport built into it would work as well. "Whenever someone would be killed or knocked unconcious, teleport them to the exit." |
| Logos704-10-07, 12:24 PM | I see a whaiver being signed, perhaps this is being run just outside of breland, just on the zil side of the border? I could see how the gnomes could appreciate a free money machine in their borders ( for a cut of course) after all, it's not like your gonna catch a zil in there. as for fatalities, I see Scrying being used to prevent cheating/ backstabing / using your teammates as fodder or a 1000 goblins. The Scryer sits on the go switch and if something goes the wrong way they shut it down and say you lost. then again, the Zil don't care and the adventure's don't care as long as the prize is paid. You can have a Silver Flamish boycott/strike above ground decrying this frivioulous entertainment at the expense of lifes. I also see a variant of mordenkinens magic mansion being made to help spruce up/distract from the real purpose. Mordenkinens Murderous Maze? takes no time to get out of , but if you dont know that it's a dead end it can eat time/waste resources threw traps and summoned creatures for a note at the end that always says " Much to your Displeasure, Here there is no Treasure " ~Mordenkinen some easy way to detect / bypass it should make it not at all out of line of a mid/low llevel spell. Add's some pizzaz Logos |
| cbradshaw00704-12-07, 01:54 PM | I ran a similar concept and have it for future play for our current campaign. For my setup I used the new dungeon tiles and built a chart of encounters. There are three rooms and 1 encounter each. The players have 20 real mins to complete the delve. I ripped this off of the delve at the D&D XPerience. Its been alot of fun and sped up our group. They have learned to focus on the combat and be ready for their turn instead of BSing about what happened last week. I am working on a program that will generate encounters on the fly. Granted it will be awhile before I can have the time to code it out. |
