Divine_Spark 07-02-07, 07:53 PM	Depends how much emphasis you place on feasability in your campaign. How likely is it for a member of Hous Vadalis to even bother attempting to Magebreed vermin? They're mindless, aren't really suited to any domestic tasks and would only be a potential purchase to a pretty niche market. Personally, I wouldn't allow it, but if you've got a character who is determined to ride a magebred stag beetle around it's up to you to decide how well it'll fit in to your game :)
Syltorian 07-03-07, 06:25 AM	I don't see any major problem with game balance, off-hand. But I agree with Divine_Spark that it might not be something Vadalis is terribly interested in doing. Vermin are mindless: that means they cannot be trained (without special rules); along with all the quirks, the magebred template is to a large extend about making creatures better responding to their trainer's commands; that's where the bonuses on Handle Animal and trick capacity come in. Being able to sell magebred giant scorpions to the armies might be interesting, and will certainly have a non-negligible psychological effect on the enemy. But you'll have trouble making sure they only attack the other side, and don't just run off after one kill to feast on their prey, or simple hide because there are too many people around...

However, and this may just be my general hatred of insects, I'd put a Vadalis heir who magebreeds vermin in the same category as a Cannith heir who goes into the Renegade Mastermaker PrC. Which is to say, you're one mild annoyance from being declared an excoriate. I can easily see, however, a market for any of the following, especially if you houserule in new breed traits. Magebred spiders(venomous) -- Special bred trait (in place of swiftbred or toughbred) to increase the Save DC on their poison (up to 4?) A swarm of magebred scarabs (carnivorous), Especially swiftbred. I would suggest you make this a prestige class, in the same vein as the ooze or vermin specialist druid PrCs.
GimliGloinson 07-03-07, 12:58 PM	Sure, why not. I mean there's about 50-gajillion "B" (or worse) movies based on genetically bread insects and animals, so go for it. I'd have to agree with the post on "one step from excoriate," though. But still. Just watch Sci-Fi these days, they've got plenty of examples. :) As long as you're going more mad scientist feel than actually for sale to normal folks. I could see a House Vadalis druid who's a Child of Winter... Hmmm....
