If an artificer has a caster level from another class, can he use Use Magic Device to emulate spells based on the other caster level?

For instance, could a Wizard 10/Artificer 1 create an Amulet of Natural Armor +3?

By Raw as long as he has the check high enough he can, yes. But a wizard's going to have a hard time keeping UMD high enough for it really to be worth while.

I'm sorry, but I'm going to disagree with you there. About the "yes he can by RAW" part.

An Artificer's ability to emulate spells is based off of his Artificer Caster Level only, to the best of my knowledge. An Artificer 1/Wizard 10 has an Artificer Caster Level of 1, thus he can only emulate 2nd-level spells (taking into account the +2 bonus he gets for this purpose).

Just as a Cleric 5/Wizard 5 has two caster levels of 5 (Cleric and Wizard), not one of 10. Her Cure Moderate still heals 2d8+5.

I think so, in the specific case of an amulet of natural armor.

In fact, I believe that it would even work for an artificer 1 and a wizard 10 who are two seperate characters.

Let's say you have a wizard 10 with craft wondrous item an an artificer 1. The artificer 1 can act as a druid 3 for spellcasting emulation purposes, emulating barkskin. The artificer then can supply the spell component to the wizard, who supplies the money, experience, and caster level, as established by the rules of cooperative item creation. The wizard, with the barkskin spell prerequisite supplied, can now make an amulet of natural armor +3.

Having established that two seperate people -- an artificer 1 and a wizard 10 -- can cooperate to make an amulet of natural armor, I'll claim that the logic also applies a fortiori to a multiclassed wizard 10/artificer 1.

This logic does not apply if the wizard/artificer tries to emulate non-wizard spells with her artificer abilities that are above 2nd level.

It says that he can emulate a spell with the UMD check.

It later says that for meeting pre-req's it's either Artificier level or Artificier level +2. Isn't this just for meeting caster level requirements?

It seems to me that he can emulate any spell that he can make a UMD check for, and if he has a caster level from another class he can use that to meet caster level reqs.

I believe there are not, in fact, any caster level prerequisites for most items. The only I can think of are magic arms/armor (+1 to +5) and other items that have various increasing effects (Gloves of Dexterity, Bracers of Armor, etc), and those prereqs are just to determine how high a bonus they can give.

The "+2 to caster level" for the Artificer means that he can emulate a spell with a minimum caster level 2 higher than his own. For example, he can scribe a scroll of Fireball (minimum caster 5, Wizard) at 3rd level (though it has his caster level of 3, so 3d6 damage). Likewise, a scroll of Cure Moderate Wounds (minimum Cleric 3) at 1st level, provided he can make the necessary UMD.

The caster levels listed under the items in the DMG are, to my knowledge, suggested levels to use for the purposes of Dispel Magic and the like.

I'd allow it, if you can cooperate in item creations with others you can cooperate with item creation with yourself IMO. The artificer part delivers the spell prerequisite, the wizard part delivers the caster level prerequisite.

PS. the artificer's ability to emulate spells relies only on UMD, the caster level bonus is for meeting caster level prerequisites ... spell prerequisites and caster level prerequisites are largely unrelated (witness the dozens of items which have high level spell prerequisites but low default caster level and no caster level prerequisite at all).
