| Malcaor03-15-08, 08:28 PM | Hi, I've been DMing for a while, but I'm going to be running my first Eberron campaign in a month or 2. One of my players wants to play a Pixie, and after discussing reasons for him to be adventuring I said it would be ok. From what I undertsand, in Eberron there is a plane where most/many fey come from. So would this mean a Pixie is an outsider in Eberron? I told the player that he might be an outsider, and therefore difficult to resurect, and he said it would still be fine. |
| Arcane Guyver03-15-08, 08:48 PM | Not a true outsider, but the pixie will definitely have the (extraplanar) subtype when adventuring in the material plane. |
| Malcaor03-15-08, 09:05 PM | ok, so it is still ressurectable like a normal fey? |
| Tiarn03-16-08, 02:18 AM | Yes, she is for all purposes still a fey. Type and everything. She just has the subtype (extraplanar) written in after her type: Fey. This means that she would be subject to certain spells that wouldn't normally target fey. (such as banishment) Furthermore, resurrection is rather rare on Eberron. Is there a reason thought is even being given toward that? |
| Malcaor03-16-08, 05:10 PM | I just wanted to know for sure, you never know when a player could get a series of bad rolls and die. Anyway, thanks for clearing that up. |
| Valgoth03-17-08, 07:40 PM | I just wanted to know for sure, you never know when a player could get a series of bad rolls and die. Anyway, thanks for clearing that up. I believe what Tiarn meant was... Resurrection is rare in Eberron because it's too high level for almost anyone to cast, especially in an "Oh man, I died, someone rez me" fashion. Death is common... all too common. (dun dun DUN!) I believe (and someone can correct me if I'm wrong) virtually the only way to get a res is to a) have a high level cleric in your party or b) convince the Keeper of the Flame to do it for you, which b1) is highly unlikely and b2) would require a nice long trip in most cases. |
| Arcane Guyver03-17-08, 08:48 PM | Eh, resurrection is very uncommon, but I wouldn't say it's that difficult for a PC to get ahold of, either. I'd think a fairly standard 'life insurance' policy for PCs and nobles is to acquire a divine scroll of Raise Dead. Then, if death occurs, have a 5th-level cleric make the DC 9 caster level check and get them rezed. |

I'd think a fairly standard 'life insurance' policy for PCs and nobles is to acquire a divine scroll of Raise Dead. Then, if death occurs, have a 5th-level cleric make the DC 9 caster level check and get them rezed. Well, PC classes at all are rare in Eberron. Divine classes even more so. It's highly unlikely "finding a 5th level cleric" is going to be anywhere as easy as you make it sound. (Plus you had to have a 9th level Cleric make the scroll in the first place!) I would suggest reading this article (http://www.wizards.com/default.asp?x=dnd/ebug/20050110a) before deciding how difficult it is to find someone to resurrect you. :) |
| Arcane Guyver03-21-08, 03:54 PM | Plus you had to have a 9th level Cleric make the scroll in the first place! However, in game-terms that's fairly irrelevant. If the wealth level of a city is high enough, there's no reason for PCs to not get ahold of a 5th-level scroll. And you could probably get away with a meager 1st-level cleric or artificer using such a scroll. I would suggest reading this article (http://www.wizards.com/default.asp?x=dnd/ebug/20050110a) before deciding how difficult it is to find someone to resurrect you. :) That's good for setting fluff, but does that really add to the gameplay? "Sorry, but the fully capable cleric refuses to resurrect you because it's against his religion" is bound to just make players angry, and look like a DM ploy to keep one player out of the game longer. If the PCs want rezzing, they'll probably get it from an artificer, a crooked cleric who's more than happy enough to cast for cash, or a cleric who has the need for adventurers to do a dangerous task for hiim. Raising isn't common, but neither are PCs. |
| Edymnion03-21-08, 09:18 PM | I just wanted to know for sure, you never know when a player could get a series of bad rolls and die.Yeah, but then you never know when you'll walk out to your mailbox and be hit by a car either. Thats one of the things that makes Eberron fun IMO, its "hardcore mode". You die, then you're just plain dead, odds are you're not coming back. Makes you actually take reasonable precautions instead of just running in with a "Well I can just get raised later" mentality. |
| Tiarn03-21-08, 11:24 PM | Quotes are not in order. ...If the PCs want rezzing, they'll probably get it from an artificer, a crooked cleric who's more than happy enough to cast for cash, or a cleric who has the need for adventurers to do a dangerous task for hiim. Raising isn't common, but neither are PCs. Assuming you could find those clerics you mentioned I wholeheartedly agree. But then I've always felt coming back from the dead should be a bit more dramatic than "we go back to town and drop the cash to have the local priest bring back player B." However, in game-terms that's fairly irrelevant. If the wealth level of a city is high enough, ... That's good for setting fluff, but does that really add to the gameplay? ... It's at these statements that I've lost interest in this discussion. I'm pretty firm in the belief that if a player feels that the fluff of a setting should take a backseat to the game's rules, that player should pick a different setting. Admittedly, Eberron is not for everyone. |
| Arcane Guyver03-22-08, 07:05 AM | Sorry, I happen to come from the idea that when the guys sit around a table to roll dice, it's to play a game, not generate a fantasy novel. The approach to accessing game rules might be different in the setting, but it's still the same basic game. Also, I hate to drop this line, but: "Everything in [core] D&D has a place in Eberron." Why else would they even bother putting in the Jorasco Resurrection Beds if characters weren't meant to be rezzed at all in Eberron? (Not that I really use that particular bit of the ECS, but the point stands.) |
| vegetalss403-28-08, 05:49 PM | I belive that house jorascar has a focus item called an alter of reserrection that can resscurect dead chareter's not common but you should be able to find one in the large citys |
