I've never played Eberron and will be playing in a new campaign next week. My question is: I know NOTHING of the setting itself (the geography, people, history, etc.) and I'm curious as to which race would be best played as a character who isn't familiar with it either.

I know I can make a (any) character and just have them not be very worldly, but I'm leaning (heavily-VERY heavily) towards a psion (who will have a high INT) and am having difficulty explaining why someone (indigenous) with such a high INT doesn't know Khorvaire (or anywhere else in Eberron) in the least.

Any suggestions would be greatly appreciated.

Well, as a psion in Eberron, you might consider being from Sarlona (the contenent across the ocean to the "east" of Khorvaire). You'll want to read up on Sarlona a bit, but being a foreigner to Khorvaire would help to explain why you are ignorant of how that contenent works.

Play a human or half-elf, and not a psion. Then you're pretty home safe.

Well I believe he wants to play an outsider (not an Outsider, but an outsider) who needs things explained to him.

There are several possibilities, Kalashtar or Adarian human from Sarlona is one possibility. Another could be a Reacher, someone from the Eldeen Reaches (frontier) that really had nothing to do with the Last War and is traveling and ends up adventuring.

Conversely you could play a Seren human, they worship dragons and come from islands just off Argonessen, tend to be barbarians and know little to nothing of the outside world, but they occasionally are exiled or take quests that bring them to the civilized world.

Another possibility, if you want to be more civilized but still know next to nothing about Khorvaire would be to play someone born and raised in Stormreach (the only free city on Xen'drik) He might have heard of the various nations, and even met people from them but by and large be ignorant of the size and scope of a civilized continent.

Just some thoughts.

My suggestion would be to play a recently created warforged with a psiforged body (from Magic of Eberron).

You don't know anything about Khorvaire because you were created about a month ago. You're not sure who made you or where you come from exactly, though from what you've learned in your one month of life, House Cannith seems to construct all warforged--but then again you've heard that the construction of new warforged by House Cannith has been outlawed. All you have been able to figure out is that you were built as some sort of psionic weapon, but to what end you don't know.

That's not a bad idea loseth. It certialy has potential both as a character and for the player.

Play a human with memory loss then :D

I have to admit, I was on the "come from Sarlona" bandwagon ... which is a foreign nation to most of the Khorvaire-centric Eberron content. However, now having read Loseth's suggestion, I'm definately backing it. The concept sounds perfect for what you need and I feel a bit embarassed that I didn't come up with it myself!

A Sarlona Psionic is still a good option, if not a bit stereotypical, but the Warforged with psionic body is just a perfect option for the character you're trying to play.

You could always merge the memory loss and Sarlonan psion ideas.
Perhaps your character was not Adaran or Syrk, but a Riedran and an agent of the Dreaming Dark. His mission had brought him to Khorvaire, but he lost some critical battle with another psionic power (kalashtar or Xoriat aberration, maybe), causing him to lose his memory as well as the fight.
Not only would your character have to get to know Khorvaire, but eventually he'd come to learn about Sarlona as well, and possibly who/what he used to be.
Imagine the moment when he discovers that he was sent to Khorvaire to destroy that which he has come to love since his memory loss.

Play a Kalashatar or Elan. Either would come from Sarlona. Being an Elan lets you use Power Points to give you better saves or DR at times, plus in Eberron Elan's are prisons for evil spirits called Quoiri. The nasties inside the human hosts were so evil that their brethren forced them to inhabit humans with no hope of controlling the mortal shell.

If you play a Psion, make him a Shaper. I just think Astral Contruct is a great power.;)

Since elans pretty much get their minds wiped away when they're transformed into elans, it makes sense that there would be quite a bit of memory loss. (this includes, of course, all previous class levels and such, but could include more mundane information, like the geography of the Five Nations)

And it leads to the cool slow realization as your campaign continues of what the hell is actually living within you.
