| greenravencloak12-03-07, 02:03 AM | So I was curious if anyone knows if Keith Baker ever posted how the new races in the Race books fit in to Eberron. |
| Amaril12-03-07, 07:05 AM | Players Guide to Eberron covers them. |
| Edymnion12-04-07, 07:39 PM | Players Guide to Eberron covers them.Poorly, and IMO rather random with their placement, but yeah, its in there. |
| Hellcow12-04-07, 08:37 PM | Players Guide to Eberron covers them. Although just for the sake of accuracy, the original poster asked if I ever posted anything, not if such information exists in a sourcebook. For the record, I didn't write the Race series sidebars in PGtE, so the answer would be "No." |
| Amaril12-04-07, 09:26 PM | And for the same sake of accuracy, I did say that Player's Guide to Eberron covered them, not Keith Baker. ;) With that in mind, I would be interested in hearing your take on those races, Keith, specifically the following: catfolk goliaths killoren raptorans sharakim sea kin stone children underfolk |
| twelvedrunkenmonkeyz12-05-07, 02:31 AM | Ok once again I wrote a document about 2 years ago, for my Eberron group (who sometimes liked to use the latest books for character creation). So here it is.... Optional Races 0 Level Adjustment Races Azurin Among the Seren tribes there is an occasion when a child is born, different. These children are Auzrins, humans infused with the power of Incarnum. The Azurin are treated differently from the other children and many times are offered to the dragons to do with as they please. Azurins view themselves as humans with special abilities and do not consider themselves a separate race. Darfallen The Darfallen are a proud and powerful race of warriors that once inhabited the southern shores of Khorvaire. Long before humans conquered Khorvaire the Darfallen where almost wiped out by the Sahaugin in a brutal war. Many of the Darfallen fled west and soon found salvation on small islands between western Khorvaire and eastern Sarlona. Only a handful of villages exist, and the Darfallen only number about 10000 across the world. The largest settlement, Caro’caro, is built into a large coral reef between two small islands, and numbers around 5000 people total. Elans Elans are a created race, once humans, they now house a trapped Qouri spirit. Infact the name Elan, is derived from the Kalashtar word for prisoner (Ellanutai) The first Elans where created by the Inspired as punishment for rebel Qouri for the last 200 years. After several incidents where the Elans showed strong psionic powers the Inspired disregarded their experiments. When the Kalashtar caught wind of these experiments they began to use this as a tool against the Inspired. Numerous human allies in Adar gave themselves to house the spirits of the Qouri. Only a small number of Kalashtar on Khorvaire even know of the Elans, and even fewer know the ritual to create one. The ritual actually requires the Qouri spirit to be trapped in a Khyber Shard, which is then attuned and implanted into host’s body. From that point forward the host becomes an Elan. Hadozee This strange race, the Hadozee, lives in the northern coastal regions of Xen’drik. This happy-go-lucky race has since spread to the seas from their contacts in Stormreach. They live in communal shelters, almost everything is shared. The Hadozee have only recently begun to ply their trade as seamen, but have already acquired a reputation as great sailors. Illumians Secretive and always untrusting, the Illumians are sub-race of humans. They have lived among the humans ever since the great migration to Khorvaire. The Illumians are a race that where once slaves to a dragon in southern lands of Sarlona. This dragon began to experiment with some of the humans that came to worship her. Once she noticed that her subjects began to try and understand the Draconic Prophecies, she soon taught them more of it. When other dragons learned of this they attempted to destroy the dragon and her followers. The ancestors of the Illumians fled to the north, where they hid. Even today, the illumians and dragons do not make a connection between themselves and the dragon’s slaves. For the most part an Illumian considers himself to be human, and hides within human settlements. Illumians that grow up within their own culture actually worship the Draconic Prophecies, where as most worship the normal gods. The Illumians of Sarlona where completely wiped out by the Inspired, and many of the cabals of Khorvaire kept the same fate during the beginning of the Last War. Today cabals inhabit many of the cities of Khorvaire, with two or three based in the largest cities, even Stormreach has a cabal. Killoren The living inbodiment of the woods, the Killoren have lived forever the in forests of Aerenal. Recently they have appeared in the ancient portions of the Eldeen Reaches, and they seem to have no knowledge of how they got there. The Killoren are few in number, and even the fey creatures know little of them, other then they say that they are “the Children”. The Killoren seem to be just as varied as humans, but have 3 distinct personalities. Meanad The Day of Mourning was a horrible event that will not soon be forgotten. Recently out of the Mournlands a strange race known as the Meanad have begun to appear. This rare and newly discovered race only numbers into the thousands. It is believed that they are mutated Kalashtar, Shifters, or some sort of crossbreed. The truth is they are both mutated Shifters and Kalashtar how where somehow cross bred, that where in Cyre during the Day of Mourning, but for some reason have lost their memories. Today there are about 5000 Meanad that inhabit the lands outside the Mournlands, and it is unknown how many still hide within that area. Raptoran A strange nomadic culture, the Raptorans inhabit many of the same lands as humans. They have lived in the Lhazaar Principalities for thousands of years, traveling south in the winter, and back north in the spring. In Sarlona, the Raptorans inhabit the mountains of Adar and still live there to this day. They worship the blue dragons that protect the mountain peak, and will serve their living gods till the day they die. In Khorvaire there are multiple roost that are scattered across the continent. The largest is in Sharn with maybe 300 Raptorans inhabiting the upper levels of a long forgotten tower. Rilkan The Rilkan are the hedonistic servant race of the Dragonkin. They inhabit the same city-states as the Skarn, but are far less in number. The Rilkan are the personal servants and craftsmen of the Dragonkin of central Argonessen. They serve their masters without question, thanking that they do not have to do the labor of the Skarns. For the most part Rilkan have many more rights then the Skarn, who detest the Rilkan for their luxurious life. Skarn The warrior race of deep central Argonessen, Skarns, are the children of the dragons. The central city-states of Argonnessen, are ruled by the dragonkin, but held together by the Skarn. The Skarn are descendants of Seren and Dragonkin breeding, altered by the mystic forces of the dragons. Today the Skarn breed true and know little of their origins, they do know they are servants to those more powerful. Xeph On eastern peninsula of Argonnessen, just south west of Sarlona is home to a race known as the Xeph. Cousins to the Seren barbarians, the Xeph are much more civilized and xenophobic. The Xeph have built several small cities deep within the land where they hide from outsiders, and the coast is dotted with many small fishing villages. The Xeph have a strong martial culture, due to their numerous beatings by the Seren barbarians. Today the Seren barbarians care little for the Xeph and will not attack their city-states, but will raid the fishing villages if they can. Like the Serens the Xeph are dragon worshippers. +1 Level Adjustment Races Aasimar Rare is the blood of the celestials of Shavarath that flows through the blood of mortals. These Aasimar are truly rare beings, and are usually the descendant of some holy crusader or protector who gained the undeniable love of an angel. Catfolk The Catfolk once inhabited numerous realms across Eberron. They once lived across Khorvaire, Xen’drik, Argonessen, and a Subrace in the Frostfeel. The Catfolk of Khorvaire have mostly been killed off, and only very small tribes exist, roaming the southern Talenta Plains. They live in male dominated societies, and male children are usually sent off as soon as they can hunt for themselves. Massive albino Catfolk inhabit the desolate lands of the Frostfell, and are feared by the few that have seen them. These savages are brutal and stronger then most Catfolk, and have been known to feed on other humanoids. Argonessen and Xen’drik Catfolk are very similar to each other. They are nomadic hunter-gatherers whose culture is not very warlike. These Catfolk usually avoid conflict and try to eek out a peaceful life. Changes: Xen’drik & Argonessen Catfolk have the standard stats and abilities. The Khorvaire Catfolk is stronger then typical Catfolk but less charming (+2 Str, +4 Dex favored class is Fighter (male), or Ranger (female)). Frostfell Catfolk are far more savage, and live violent hard lives (+4 Str, +2 Dex, +2 Con, -2 Cha, Favored Class Barbarian). Duergar Whispers in the halls of the Mror Holds speak of a mythical clan of dwarves in the west that allied with the Dealkyr during their invasion and worshipped them as gods. Even today when a dwarf shows talent in the psionic arts it is claimed that he has been tainted with the Ara’duergar (Blood of the Duergar). In fact the Duergar do exist, they have been twisted by the evil they subjected themselves to. Many Duergar inhabit deep within the depths of the Shadowcrags of the Eldeen Reaches and the Demon Wastes. A few cities have Goliaths The Goliaths are a race that inhabits the mountains of Khorvaire and the icy plains of the Frostfell. This strange race came here long ago with the dwarves migrating from the Frostfell. The Goliath of eastern Khorvaire are few in number, with maybe 3000 total, and live high within the mountains of the Mror Holds. In the western mountains they seem to be more numerous, but for the most part are extremely reclusive. The western Goliath has less to do with the outside world, except for the Gatekeepers, who they have a deep respect for. There are about 10000 Goliath that roam from the Demon Waste all the way to the mountains of Droaam. Those that still inhabit the Frostfell travel far and wide hunting the beasts there. They are similar to the western Goliaths in culture, but are much more open and friendly like the Goliaths of the Mror Holds. Half-Giants Half-giants are not a race in the common sense. They are the result of several different combinations of parents. The most common is the child of a human and one of three giants (Stone, Frost, and Fire usually). The most common variety is the child of a hill giant with a kalashtar or psionic human. Changes: +2 bonus to spells versus either fire, cold, or earth spells/psionics for those whose parent was a Stone, Frost, or Fire giant. Half-giants with a Hill Giant parent do not receive the +2 acclimated saving throw bonus, but instead receive Stability (+4 against Bull Rush and Trip attacks while standing on the ground). Half-Ogre Half-Ogres are the children of ogre parentage (half-ogres other parent can sometimes be a dwarf, elf, or other medium-sized humanoid). These beings are usually outcast in their own society, but some have been known to become powerful leaders (usually because they are smarter then their ogre parents). Most Half-Ogres today come from Droaam, but many come from all over Khorvaire. Tiefling Tieflings trace their lineage back to the days of yore, when a mortal coupled with fiends. Over the centuries their demonic heritage has splintered into almost nothingness, but occasionally it appears again, this being the nature of the Tiefling. Like Aasimars the tieflings are rare and only a few are even known to exist. Uldra The Uldra are a race of fey inhabitant of the Frostfell. They have little to do with the outside world, but welcome friends with open arms. They are the only people to have any kind of permanent settlements in the desolate lands, though these are nothing more then improved natural wonders. Also I'd like to make the following note. Some of the stuff has been put in source books accordingly (such as Xephs, Half-giants, Dromites, etc, etc), which just goes to show, with a little creativity you can still fits those races else where and make it logical (and not a "just because excuse"). |
| twelvedrunkenmonkeyz12-05-07, 02:34 AM | I know I'M NOT Keith Baker, but I have always toyed with the idea that the sharakim are prodigy of orcs, who revert to their elder ancestory. This pretty much means that they are highly respected among their peers, and usually come from ancestral homelands of the orcs. |
| ProfJbWolf12-06-07, 02:38 AM | Just thought I'd mentioned, but many of the Psionic-inclined Races (Maenad, Dromites, Xeph, Duergar) are mentioned in Secrets of Sarlona |
| twelvedrunkenmonkeyz12-06-07, 03:52 AM | Yeah I noticed that when I looked at the book the other day. But I haven't yet updated my file I copied and pasted from. I still use my ideas however, seein' as I hate the fact that Sarlona seems to be where they threw all the psionic races and stuff. I especially like the idea I came up with the half-giants. The reason is, I never understood how they all had fire resistance (what where they all the prodigy of some poor Fire Giant who was not as "blessed" as the other fire giant men.) But yes in need of an update. |
| Salla12-06-07, 03:26 PM | Yeah I noticed that when I looked at the book the other day. Well, the reason they put 99 percent of the psionic stuff in Sarlona was because not every DM uses psionics, likes psionics, or owns the XPH. Putting it in an out-of-the-way place makes it accessible for those DMs who use psionics, but puts it enough out of the spotlight that those DMs who don't can conveniently ignore it. |
| twelvedrunkenmonkeyz12-06-07, 03:56 PM | well it just seems cheesy, I know why they did it. |
| 18DELTA12-07-07, 12:50 AM | Would "The Sakah" from PGtE,(page 35)be considered Tieflings? I am an Eberron newb too.:D |
| twelvedrunkenmonkeyz12-10-07, 08:45 AM | Well I think the Sakah at the very least would be Tieflings, but I think that a large number of them are even half-fiends (although the majority are going to be Tieflings). Without a doubt in my mind they are for sure touched by fiendish corruption from the Rakshashas. |
| ArcTan12-10-07, 02:53 PM | Yeah I noticed that when I looked at the book the other day. D&D's race of Half-Giants has fire resistance and psionic powers because they originated as a specific kind of half-giant from the desert-themed Dark Sun campaign setting. |
| twelvedrunkenmonkeyz12-11-07, 03:50 AM | Yeah I know but I always hated that, plus I've had several groups where people wanted to play Half-giants in Khorvaire. So I came up with what seemed to me, to be a logical solution. Also it seems to me, that the abilities should've been changed, seeing as this is not Athas, its Eberron (god I would flip if they made another Dark Sun setting, that was always may favorite, where even the good guys had to be bad sometimes. Yes I know about the Dragon Magazine update as well). |
| Wizardman12-13-07, 08:06 PM | Would "The Sakah" from PGtE,(page 35)be considered Tieflings? I am an Eberron newb too.:D I'm under the impression that they were mystically mutated by the energies of the Wastes. Some of them may well be tieflings or half-fiends, but the majority of them are human or half-orc. This is just my impression, though. |
