| Raziel_Brokodar03-26-07, 04:59 PM | Can a warforged artificer with the weapon familiar substitution level use a ranged weapon, or does it have to be melee only? Well what does it say in RoE? You should check, if it specifies then no. Though even if does a DM could allow it. Now for me to check for myself as you should have done. "Beginning at 5th level, a warforged artificer can craft an intelligent melee weapon......." And there you have it unless a DM allows it, they can only use the class feature to create a melee weapon familiar. |

| jaelis03-27-07, 11:51 AM | Thanks Raziel, I'm working off a friend's book and won't have it until this weekend. Another question, probably more a matter of interpretation: I know you can deliver touch spells with your weapon familiar. Can you deliver them as a touch attack? Obviously you wouldn't do any weapon damage, but it would be nice to let the weapon's attack bonus apply. |

Now for me to check for myself as you should have done. Well now, looks like someone's corn flakes sat in the the milk a bit too long this morning. Personally, I always carry my D&D library with me at all times (especially at work!) so I can answer spur of the moment questions no matter the time of day. Another question, probably more a matter of interpretation: I know you can deliver touch spells with your weapon familiar. Can you deliver them as a touch attack? Obviously you wouldn't do any weapon damage, but it would be nice to let the weapon's attack bonus apply. Are you looking to take advantage of Touch AC to deliver a spell effect (but no weapon damage) and still apply the bonus to hit? I'd have to playtest the sketchyness of that concept. I don't think that Artificer's gain proficiency with any reach weapons that would make this a horribly broken concept but players come up with new and improved ways to jury rig the rules. |
| Captain_Kobold03-28-07, 11:48 AM | The Deliver touch infusions ability specifically states that you can deliver them with either a melee touch attack or a normal melee attack. It does say infusions, not spells in general though. Artificers can use longspears, and have no real restrictions stopping them from picking up feats like Exotic Weapon Prof: Whip. Since the number of offensive infusions are limited, this doesn't really break the game though. Anyone got any thoughts on Weapon Familiars that can be thrown? i.e. Melee weapons with a range increment listed. As far as I can see, these could be used to deliver infusions at an even greater range. |
