| glug02-08-07, 12:45 PM | Hi folks, I'm DMing an Eberron game, and the cleric in our crew has expressed interest in the Sovereign Speaker. I am in no way familiar enough with this game to know all of the weird strange pitfalls that make people in the optimizers forum cry, and reading their thread about the class didn't clear things up either. The player is by no means a power gamer. She likely has no idea of any super ultra mega gamebreaking combos she can whip up with this class. The thing is.. neither do I. I understand that SS's get a new domain at every level, and that domains give her certain feat-like powers, including weapon proficiencies. Also, over the course of 9 levels, I believe she gets about three more domain slots, so it counts as extra prepared spells for these hand-picked domains. My question is.. what are the tricks and overpowered things that I should be watching out for? What options should I discuss with her up front and say "I don't want to allow this" before she takes the class? Any help of course is greatly appreciated =) -glug |

| Roland the Crownbreaker02-08-07, 05:02 PM | Don't let then combine that prestige class with the domain cleric option. A domain cleric spontaneously channels domain spells, rather than just healing spells. Balanced when you only have 2 domains to worry about, but I don't think it is a good fit for someone with 12 of them. I am not sure if there is a way to get domains into the hands of a favored soul (with a one level dip into a PrC of some kind there probably is) and the same would apply. 10+ domains of spontaneous casting might not be as overpowered as it sounds, but it sure will help make the sorcerer feel useless. |
| glug02-08-07, 05:08 PM | Very good point, Roland. That's probably the biggest thing I need to look out for, and I recall people mentioning the spontaneous casting thing, but I didn't know where it came from. I'll make sure we avoid that =) |
| slimenstrakhazmodan05-28-07, 04:05 AM | As a SS (pg33 in Faiths of Ebberon)myself I have tried to be non abusive of the power. Things I would watch for is Domain choices you can only have 2 domains per any one deity (ie she cant have magic, spell and knowledge)so if she takes good it Fs alot of others. Domain list pg 149 FoE or http://www.wizards.com/default.asp?x=dnd/ex/20060911a&page=2 If she takes the Domain Spontaneity feat this allows her to swap out prepped spells for a certain domain but only by losing a turn for the day unless she adds Heroic Channeling witch allows her to use action points instead of daily turns. I have done this for force and travel since we have no straight mage. Hope this helps |
| Cifer05-28-07, 07:23 AM | Something that you might want to watch is that when you take the War domain, you can only get proficiency in the weapon of a deity who also has that domain. This leaves the helbard of Dol Arrah and the longsword of Dol Dorn. |
| Bluebrush05-28-07, 07:33 AM | Well, upon becoming a soverign speaker, you gain proficiency in all the soverign hosts' favoured weapons, from Dol Arrah's Halberd to Kol Korran's mace. |
| Cifer05-28-07, 05:16 PM | I didn't have the books with me and posted from memory, since that's what normally happens when a cleric of the Host takes the War domain. Interesting to know, though. Thanks for the correction. |
| ZarineBashire06-03-07, 12:46 AM | Something that you might want to watch is that when you take the War domain, you can only get proficiency in the weapon of a deity who also has that domain. This leaves the helbard of Dol Arrah and the longsword of Dol Dorn. Where is the offical rulling on this? |
| Vharuck06-03-07, 02:45 AM | Most domain abilities are cool once per day things that are just neat. This PrC is a flavorful one that makes the cleric a little more fun and well-rounded, but hardly more powerful. I'd be more concerned about the inherent power of a plain ol' cleric. |
| Beowulfe06-12-07, 01:16 PM | And as for worshipping the Host and not a specific deity in it but taking the War domain. Faiths has listed the favored weapon of the Host is longsword so a cleric would get that, not the favored weapon of a specific deity. But as was pointed out, SS gets all the favored weapons, just not Weapon Focus. |
| AkumaDaimyo06-12-07, 01:57 PM | What about actually making sure the player meets the RP requirements and NOT just the crunch requirements? It IS called a ROLEplaying game for a reason. I know there is more to Sovereign Speaker than just meeting some stat requirements. Isn't there a lot of RP and time involved in becoming a Sovereign Speaker? |
| ChristopherGroves06-14-07, 12:36 AM | Sovereign Speaker is strong, but it isn't much worse than any PrC'd cleric. They do have to watch their domains closely; there are not alot of combos that work. Don't adopt it for anything but the host. |
| slimenstrakhazmodan06-14-07, 12:58 AM | To true about the roleplaying aspect I have even been having a bit of fun sending my dm emails of journal entries by my pc from before the campaign's begining. |
