I have recently been looking at the Daelkyr half-breed and the new symbiont's that came along with it. Then I started wonder how would one make a symbiont, where one get the ability to craft such a thing and which kinds could your craft. So am I asking you all, have any of you come up with of these types of concepts and such your self? I like a bit of imput on this to try and get an idea of where to go with them.

I think Symbionts are one of the few items that are out of most characters ability to craft. For the Daelkyr, they can shape life with a simple touch. There's not really any way for a regular character to do that.

That said, a character with levels in the Fleshwarper prc (Lord's of Madness), or someone like Moradin the Fleashweaver, could likely make new ones. I'd make it require a feat (along the lines of Craft Wonderous Item, but limited to symbionts) and a decent level of Transmutation magic ability or Psionic talent.

As for the cost, go with a percentage of the listed costs in MoE, as well as have a percentage cost as XP. Crafting time should really be months instead of days, but that kind of handicaps the crafter, so just go with the regular crafting time used for magic items.

I might let you do it with Craft Wondrous.

And with access to a fully equipped Daelkyr lab.... including the Daelkyr.

*Warning! Daelkyr tend to have more than one experiment running at a time. You may be one of those experiments.

I figured it would be hard to craft and come up with, now the next question is what kinds of abilities would have have and be able to use. Keep going with what seems to be the same logic, they take up a space as a magic item or armor would and base their abilities off that?

One (rather lazy) alternative is to change fluff for any magic item. Just say its a symbiont, with no change to stats.

One (rather lazy) alternative is to change fluff for any magic item. Just say its a symbiont, with no change to stats.

Once when I got bored in class and started statting up Mordain the Fleshweaver, I decided to do this with his magic items. Symbionts are somewhat difficult to create, and it wouldn't be unusual for players to feal uneasy about using the symbionts after defeating him. So I sort of met halfway, saying that they were still the same magic items, same slots, but different in that they sometimes showed signs of life.

For example, I gave him an ogre's heart which hung from a golden chain around his neck and latched onto his chest with its veins, granting him the toughness of an ogre. Mechanically, it was an amulet of health.
