05-18-07, 08:16 AM Quick question; what is the symbol called on the warforged brow? And if anyone knows, can you tell me the book that lists what it is called? I'm sure I have it, but I can't find it anywhere.

Anywho, its covered in the Warforged Dragonshard, I think its in Races of Eberron, and I believe its in the Warforged chapter of the Players Guide to Eberron as well.

Does it really stand for "truth"? That would be a pretty direct jab at the shem of jiddish golems which had precisely that word written on a scroll inside them. Oh, well, I stopped wondering since I read of the Silver Flame's Baker's Night holiday...

I remember Keith being cryptic about the ghulras before whatever book detailed them came out, and I think he mentioned the illustration of Rune in the ECS as having a clue in it about the ghulras, that there was something mystical to them. That picture (away from my books, so I don't have the page, but its the one with the WF attacking the human for making a racial joke about WF) has the WF's ghulra emitting some kind of glowing mystical energy, but we never got anything more on it.

Makes me want to do a WF PrC that grants various powers based around the ghulra.

But I would like to be able to show my players (I run an Eberron game) the page... just in case any of you might know this.

I guess the dragonshard was the first time they got officially addressed.

Just checked PGtE, and it turns out that the WF got a whopping 2 pages there. Guess I was wrong, the dragonshard seems to be the *ONLY* place the ghulras were addressed, beyond what Keith has said here on the boards that is.

The symbols themselves don't stand for "truth", though. In fact, no one knows what they mean. They're simply called ghulras, under the assumption that each warforged's unique sigil would reveal something significant about its bearer if it could be deciphered.

By the way, isn't there at least one story about a golem with the word written on its forehead? As I recall, it was partially erased to spell "death" in Hebrew and destroy the golem when it got out of hand.

Writing one of the names of God on its forehead, a slip of paper attached to its forehead, or on a clay tablet under its tongue, or writing the word Emet (אמת, 'truth' in the Hebrew language) on its forehead are examples of such words. By erasing the first letter in Emet to form Met (מת, 'dead' in Hebrew) the golem could be deactivated. Another way is by writing a specific incantation in the owner's blood on calfskin parchment, and placing it in the mouth. Removing the parchment will deactivate the golem. It is likely that this is the same incantation that the Rabbi recites in the classic narrative.

05-26-07, 01:31 PM There was actually a boss fight in one of the Castlevanias (Lament of Innocence on the PS2) that was sort of that in reverse, you had to find the tablet with the letter on it to change the word from "death" to "life" or at least that's how it was written in the game

No. As others have already pointed out, "ghulra" is the name given TO the symbol, not the meaning of the symbol itself. As each ghulra is unique, "ghulra" was used because the magewrights believed that the symbol spoke to the true nature of the spirit within.

With that said, the golem is certainly an influence. The two are not the same. Each ghulra is different and you can't erase part of a ghulra; as Edymnion has said, there's more to the ghulra that will hopefully come out some day. But sure, I make no bones about being influenced by our folklore. The Daughters of Sora Kell are inspired by the Gray Sisters, Baba Yaga, and any number of triune goddesses. There's a lot of good touchstones in our world, and while I've always tried not to DIRECTLY lift from a particular culture or myth, I've certainly used many for inspiration.

Oh, well, I stopped wondering since I read of the Silver Flame's Baker's Night holiday...
That, on the other hand, I had nothing to do with.

There may be officially scheduled events, but I'm thinking something a little more informal, along the lines of "I'll be hanging out in the lobby of the Omni from 7-11 on Saturday night." Once I get my schedule worked out, I'll post something on my website (speaking of which, I'm planning a new Eberron trivia contest for this Saturday, so make sure to check in then!).

#1 Thank you greatly for your input and creative work on Eberron. My gaming group adores the campaign setting and we unhesitatingly purchase all Eberron materials the day they're released.

I'm also thinking that I'll have an open gathering Saturday night leading up to this game. More news as it develops.I like the trivia contest you did, actually. "Identify what game mechanic is being represented by this part of the book". Thats fun all by itself, and the prize is definately a good one!

Makes me wish I were going to GenCon.
If I can get you to come to Dragon sometime though, I wanna call dibs on a seat in your game. ;)

Should be fairly easy to get in contact with them, and have them get in touch with the roleplaying guys. The chances of them paying your way or anything are virtually nil, but they'd give you a table in the dealer's room to sell autographs and the like.

Honestly, if its just a piece of paper from the con saying "Come on out!" that you be wanting, I could get somebody to send that out to you PDQ. Just PM me the address you want them to send the letter to.

If you indeed plan on holding a get together of minds (per se), will it be an open room for anybody to walk in on and join or a scheduled room? However you plan on doing it, I think it might be a great idea if you could let a select few hint, hint know when and where.

There may be officially scheduled events, but I'm thinking something a little more informal, along the lines of "I'll be hanging out in the lobby of the Omni from 7-11 on Saturday night." Once I get my schedule worked out, I'll post something on my website (speaking of which, I'm planning a new Eberron trivia contest for this Saturday, so make sure to check in then!).

My gaming group adores the campaign setting and we unhesitatingly purchase all Eberron materials the day they're released. #2 Do me a favour please and just say "hi" to Steve (Istvan) at Netdevil for/from me. Details can be found here (http://www.bossythecow.com/), and seats at the table will be filled over the next two months through an ongoing Eberron trivia contest. I'm also thinking that I'll have an open gathering Saturday night leading up to this game. More news as it develops.

"Identify what game mechanic is being represented by this part of the book". Thats fun all by itself, and the prize is definately a good one! Makes me wish I were going to GenCon. If I can get you to come to Dragon sometime though, I wanna call dibs on a seat in your game. ;)

Should be fairly easy to get in contact with them, and have them get in touch with the roleplaying guys. The chances of them paying your way or anything are virtually nil, but they'd give you a table in the dealer's room to sell autographs and the like. Honestly, if its just a piece of paper from the con saying "Come on out!" that you be wanting, I could get somebody to send that out to you PDQ. Just PM me the address you want them to send the letter to.
