Does anyone think that the Daelkyr Half-Blood from Magic of Eberron get kinda cheated, even with the free symbiont(s)?

Heck, no. You can be a level 1 Barbarian with 23 hp at best (with an 18 Constitution) or a level 1 sorcerer with 11 hp with an average Constitution.

I don't like that the throwing scarab is clearly a better choice than the crawling gauntlet, and maintains way more viability than even the Stormstalk or the Winter Cyst after those are even available.

The cyst and stalk are pretty lame I think. The throwing scarab is awesome at low levels, but is eventually hampered by the fact you can only get one per round.

I've always wanted to play a caster with a tentacle whip to deliver my touch attacks from 15 feet away. Also, aren't 1/2 bloods aberations? If so you get all sort of different spell effects. like immunity to charm person. So I don't think they get shafted.
Kinger

Precisely. Halfbloods are Aberrations, meaning they're not Humanoid when it comes to spell targeting (similar to Warforged).

Charm person? Nah. Daze? Nope. Hold Person? Ha! The list goes on.

Having said all that, though, it does leave Halfbloods vulnerable to anti-aberration effects, which could be justifiably common (similarly to Warforged and anti-construct).

I house-ruled that the gauntlet has the same stats as a scimitar. The scarab is cool for a throwing weapon style rogue. Sure, you only get one, but nothing says that all of your thrown weapons have to be the same (right?). Scarab, dagger, dagger!

Also, as a side note, do you allow the "Improved Natural Attack" feat to be applied to the symbiont?

I wouldn't see why not - the feat requires and improves a natural weapon, the Gauntlet grants one.

Or did you talk about the throwing scarab? That one probably wouldn't qualify.

Half-daelkyr should have access to aberrant marks!

Who's with me?

... Anyone?
Cifer

Why? He's an own race, as evidenced by the fact that Half-Daelkyr is not a template, so humanborn HD seem to be the same as dwarfborn HD. Just being born by a DMed race is not sufficient to develop marks, aberrant or otherwise.

Can't say I'm with you. The "Aberrant" Marks (marks that are different from the majority and are seen as corrupted) have really nothing to do with Aberrations (abominations of nature).

Depends on the DM. (http://www.wizards.com/default.asp?x=dnd/ebee/20050704a)

Still, a Daelkyr half-blood can easily have two human parents, if one had a breed leech, so they can be directly descended from a Dragonmarked house. The usual restrictions that apply to a "non-Dragonmarked race" don't always apply.

True.

False. Where do you see these restrictions being lifted?

The prereq for the Least Dragonmark feat is "Member of appropriate dragonmarked race and house"; the prereq for the Aberrant Dragonmark feat is "Dragonmarked Race", followed by a list of the dragonmarked races. A daelkyr half-blood with two human parents still has a race of 'daelkyr half-blood', not 'human', nor any other race that would qualify it as a 'dragonmarked race', therefore it does not qualify for any dragonmarks, aberrant or otherwise.

You're right. I didn't mean to say that the game rule restrictions didn't apply. I just meant that anyone else who's part of a non-Dragonmarked race is descended from a line of people also not of a Dragonmarked race (or built on the same forge as them). If aberrant Dragonmarks tend to pop up in the bloodlines descended from the Houses, common sense might say that it could appear in the half-bloods too.

The game, of course, says they can't, so they can't.

A changeling can easily have about 3/4 human in his lineage and still doesn't qualify for any marks. A DH isn't even the same type as a human.
Neofish

04-17-07, 07:54 PM
If you own LoM, you could rule that despite the fact DH are aberrations, they may still take Aberrant feats and are already considered to have the Aberrant Blood feat when choosing aberrant feats. I tdid anyway.

Actually, a variant that doesn't involve symbionts (since symbionts aren't really all that great to begin with) could simply grant Aberrant Blood instead of Symbiont Mastery at the start and maybe...a Charisma penalty (?) to remove Symbiont Dependency.

In one of the Eberron source books there was a half-blood with one of the 12 marks, House Deneith if I recall correctly.

Direct quotes or it didn't happen! I refuse to believe that something like that slipped past the editors, even the drunken koalas in the WotC editing department.

Yep, I have and have read every one of the source books and I don't remember that at all. I'm pretty sure if that was in a book I'd remember something that contradictory to the rules and you know it would have been on this site inside of a day after release. Edy would have been all over that like white on rice on a white paper plate in the middle of a snow storm.

I was basically going for this idea, was just waaay too lazy to try make sense of it in my head. Thanks Tao ;).

-RAW-wise, I realize it doesn't work.

-But flavour-wise, I think it's great. A half-daelkyr could easily be born of two dragonmarked parents. And that same energy that warps the child could also warp the child's potential dragonmark, into an aberrant mark. That would bump up the whole "grab your torch and pitchforks!" bit, making them even more reviled by others.

I understand those of you who don't like the idea, or just want to play it by the books. Fair enough. After all, it's just an idea.

Hearing about a Half-Blood with an aberrant Dragonmark would have the same effects, I think, of house cannith hearing tale of a Warforged claiming inheiritence from a house member.

Also, what my DM let me do with my symbiont was to have it increase its damage by the size chart in Magic of Eberron. For every three levels I gained, it got a power boost to represent its growth from a fledgling to a full blown freak of nature.

For example: Crawling Gauntlet: Levels 1-3 = 1d4, 4-6 = 1d6, 7-9 = 1d8, 10-12 = 2d6, 13-15 = 2d8

Dont forget that you get darkvision as Aberrations, Also the immunity to all those pesky humanoid spells (hold person). Honestly i think they are balanced .... perhaps allitle on the strong side even. (though on our list the shadow sibling can be grown i think at either 5th or 10th level and the armor can be grown at 20th)

Well, if it's any help, the psiforged just two pages later obviously has one mind governing two bodies, or to be more specific: It's got a mithral body as well as a psicrystal one, most probably because it was decided only later that psiforged are not a subrace but only have a different body feat.

I was thinking, would you be able to dual wield Tentacle Whips? A Dexterous fighter with two Whips and a Tongueworm seems like a freaky-but-fun idea to me!

How much damage does a Tentacle Whip do, anyway?
