As the thread title suggests, I am working on a Cleric character who will hopefully eventually taking the Sovereign Speaker prestige class.

I was looking for suggestions on combinations of Domains that would be useful or interesting.

I've got a short list of those domains I like to use, but there may be something I'm missing.

I like Sun, War, Strength, Celerity, Travel, Healing and Force.

Any other suggestions? Also, which two should I start with? I am thinking about Celerity and War. I figure that if I'm going to take the Weapon Focus, I'd better take it as soon as possible, since I won't be getting my third domain until level 6.

Edit: Curse my typos!!!!

Luck domain is, in my mind, almost a must. The ability to reroll a bad roll is... well, it could be the difference between life and death.

Consider it added to the list. I think I may have noticed it before and then forgotten about it.

Any suggestions about what may be the most useful at first level?

Taking the War Domain grants you weapon focus in your deity's choosen weapon (Long sword for the host itself), freeing up the feat for you.

Also, I can't recall at the moment, but several domains grant slternate uses of turn undead,....such as turning certain elementals....always a handy thing :)

Understand what the domain does, what I was suggesting was that if I want to take it, I should take it sooner than later. I've since changed my mind. I decided that I don't want to fight with a longsword. I am going to go for some kind of polearm, if possible, but without a level in fighter which I don't want to take, I don't see how I can do that. Also, the prestige class grants proficiency with all of the favoured weapons.

I've also eliminated Celerity from my list, because the granted power only functions in light armour. :(

I think I've chosen Luck and Sun at first level. I may take War later, if I find myself wanting to go sword and board.

You'll be covered when you take the PrC since it grants proficiency with all of the SH favored weapons & Dol Arrah's is the halberd, IIRC.

But I think that since you're worshipping all of the Host (PrC pre-req), then taking the War domain would give you weapon focus with the longsword (preferred weapon of the pantheon) and not just the halberd.

Definitely some wiggle room for a house rule or two.

Yeah, with the character starting at first level, I won't have that proficiency until 6th level. I'll just use simple weapons until then. If I do take the War domain it will only be because I've decided to use a shield, and so a two-handed weapon doesn't work. Maybe i'll start out with the quarterstaff. I won't be using it two-handed though.

Thanks for your help guys, but unless someone has more advice regarding the domains I should be taking, what order I should be taking them in, or which I should avoid, I'll stop checking this thread.

Taking the magic domain is almost a given for a Sovereign Speaker. You may also want to see if you can take the UA alternative ability to spontaneously cast domain spells instead of "cure" spells. It depends on your DM and the campaign. There is also a feat that lets you spontaneously cast spells from a particular domain (I think it costs a turn attempt).

I've seen the feat you're talking about. I thought about taking it once I have access to some good domains. The Summoning Domain is especially good for that feat, and Healing is a little dedundant.

On that note, I don't even really see the benefit of taking the healing domain. You can heal 1 extra point per casting, and you can cast one extra cure spell per spell level. Seems a little superfluous when you think about spontaneous casting.

I'll look into the Magic Domain when I get back to my books. Thanks.

Taking the Heal domain means you retain your ability to spontaneously cast cure spells and you can spontaneously cast other healing spells, as well as everything else. It's the best of both worlds.

What I meant is that with spontaneous casting from the PHB, the spontaneous ability to cast healing spells, as well as other domain spells is a bit of a wash. Also, spontaneously casting cure spells, and having the healing domain on top of that is a bit too much of the same thing to me. Getting +1 points healed doesn't seem worth it compared to weapon prof. and focus with a favoured weapon for example.

I put together a spreadsheet for one of my players. It lists the domains that each of the host gods offer, and where the conflict is. I don't think I can post up a spreadsheet here, but I'll give you the conflict parts anyway (and if you drop an email addy into a PM, I'll forward this to you).

The reason, of course, is that you cannot add a domain if it would be the third from a single god.. even if you took it 'from' a different god. Meaning: If you have Community and Family, you cannot ever take Law or Good, because they are all under Boldrei.

The only ones in conflict are:
Good - Boldrei, Dol Arrah, Arawai, Olladra, Onatar, Dol Dorn
Law - Boldrei, Dol Arrah, Aureon
Chaos - Dol Dorn
War - Dol Arrah, Dol Dorn
Creation - Arawai, Onatar

I added Chaos because I don't think you can take Law *and* Chaos, or Good *and* Evil, in general as a cleric.

Specific to your original post:
I like Sun, War, Strength, Celerity, Travel, Healing and Force.

Once you have Sun, War and Strength, you could not take any other domain that either of Dol Dorn and Dol Arrah have available, such as Law, Chaos, Good, Glory, Competition or Liberation.

Well...There's the domain spontenaity feat, which allows you to burn turning attempts to cast domain spells. I forget what the exact mechanics of it was, but I remember Once designing a Sovreign speaker that had it...

I never intended to play it, but I think I had the domains of Air, Earth, Fire, Warforged, Plant, Magic, Healing, and War. The idea was to be a Sword and Board Cleric who could cast insane amounts of cure spells...

I think I figured out that this character with a charisma of 14 could turn out 54 spontaneous domain spells per day...

Im in the same boat with my character im thinking of, but onto the question at hand.

I personally like Warforged domain and War domains. But thats from my own thinking because of the character I have in mind is a Warforged cleric :).

Take War and grab one of the non martial weapons thats not granted by your god or stick with whatcha got now and thats simple weapons. Consider using a shield and just throwing Javelins over the shield at the enemy while you block the door and hold the bad guys at bay, which is what ill end up doing maybe :)

Hope this helps.

I'm going to correct myself, because I found something in the Domain Spotaneity feat that I missed earlier. I didn't realize that you had to spend a spell and a turn to activate it...so that's out of the window...

However, if you go the Divine Metamagic empower and/or maximize, you can do quite alot of healing/damage and primarily burn turn attempts...

I don't think you were reading that right. When you spontaneously cast, it takes up a spell slot when you do that. Using the way you have, may be a more literal reading of the feat, but it's super broken. Nobody should be casting that many spells a day.

Thanks for all the advice.

I ended up making the character a human cleric of the Sovereign Host. He uses a longspear primarily. When that doesn't work, I've got a heavy mace and shield.

I took the Sun and Luck domains to start, and I'm going to have to take a closer look at what's available when I get the chance to advance later.

P.S. glad to see you caught yourself before I interjected, gensuke626, but I hadn't read that.

Not only super-broken, but misunderstood. The feat clearly states that you must use a turn/rebuke undead attempt, not any turn/rebuke attempt. I know, I´m taking a Speaker in a Forgotten Realms campaign :P

(Note: He is a Lord Ao priest)

Anyway, Domain Spontaneity is a good choice with the Magic and Travel Domains once you´re able to cast Dispel Magic and Teleport... always useful, never prepared when needed.

Aye, the Cleric in my campaign just hit Speaker, and she's got domain spont. now as well. It is *very* powerful, considering you're not always fighting undead, and your turn attempts won't always be used anyway. You're adding a whole list of domain spells to your list of spontaneous spells, which is incredible. All it costs is a turn attempt to use that ability. Very powerful =)
