There was a thread a few weeks back about hobgoblin mounts and within a few folk liked the idea of tribex cavalry. So did I. I've finally come around to creating stats for both the "regular" herd tribex and the war mount for Dhakaani warriors. As I love tweaking and twisting stats, the base creature is almost a bison, with a few minor changes in numbers with some descriptive text to indicate their surlier natures. Click here a drawing of a tribex. (http://www.wizards.com/dnd/images/eb_gallery/82172.jpg)

And so...

Tribex CR 2
Looming taller than a man at the shoulder, this hoofed quadruped snorts and huffs as it grazes the grassland. Its short-furred hide is marked with three distinct bands of color, rich brown over its back, a wide of stripe sky blue across its ribs, and a milky cream underneath. From beneath a proud triple-crown of ridged horns, liquid brown eyes keep a constant watch and its fuzzy ears twitch with every shuffle and bump in its surroundings.

Stampede (Ex): A frightened herd of tribex flees as a group in a random direction (but always away from the perceived source of danger). They literally run over anything of Large size or smaller that gets in their way, dealing 1d12 points of damage for each five tribex in the herd (Reflex DC 17 half ). The save DC is Strength-based.

Across the great Southern plains of Khorvaire, vast herds of tribex roam. Primarily non-aggressive, the tribex is often hunted by Talenta halflings for meat and hides and Valenar elves for sport as the stubborn beasts are difficult to bring down. Efforts at domestication for the most part ended in failure. A tribex is far too stubborn and willful to use as a beast of burden. The goblins of ancient Dhakaan had some success in breeding a strain of war mounts, but any large-scale breeding ranches vanished along with the goblin’s empire.

Tribex, War CR 3
Looming taller than a man at the shoulder, this hoofed quadruped snorts and huffs as it grazes the grassland. Its short-furred hide is marked with three distinct bands of color, rich brown over its back, a wide of stripe sky blue across its ribs, and a milky cream underneath. From beneath a proud triple-crown of ridged horns, liquid brown eyes keep a constant watch and its fuzzy ears twitch with every shuffle and bump in its surroundings. While vigilant, the creature seems largely unconcerned with your presence.

N Large Animal
Init -1; Senses Low-light Vision, Scent; Listen +6, Spot +4
-------------------------------------------------------------
AC 12 (-1 Size, -1 Dex, +4 Natural)
touch 8, flat-footed 12
HP 44 (5d8+20)
Fort +7, Ref +3, Will +3
-------------------------------------------------------------
Speed 50 ft. (10 squares)
Melee gore +8 (1d8+9)
Space 10 ft.; Reach 5 ft.
Base Attack +3; Grapple +13
-------------------------------------------------------------
Abilities Str 23, Dex 8, Con 19, Int 2, Wis 13, Cha 7
Special Qualities Combative Mount, Low-light Vision, Scent
Feats Endurance, Iron Will
Skills Spot +4, Listen +6
-------------------------------------------------------------
Climate/Terrain Temperate Plains
Organization Solitary or herd (6-30)
Treasure none
Advancement 7-9 HD (Large)
-------------------------------------------------------------
Combative Mount (Ex): A rider on a war tribex gets a +2 circumstance bonus on Ride checks. A war tribex can fight while carrying a rider, but the rider cannot also attack unless he or she succeeds on a Ride check (free action, DC 10). A war tribex is proficient with all types of barding.
Carrying Capacity: A light load for a war tribex is up to 600 pounds; a medium load, 601–1,200 pounds; and a heavy load, 1,201-1,800 pounds. A war tribex can drag 9,000 pounds.

This is the legendary war mount of the ancient Dhakaani cavalry. Smarter and stronger than ordinary tribex, the war beasts continued to breed true even after the empire’s collapse. Unlike ordinary tribex, a war tribex herd doesn’t stampede from danger, but rather the stronger larger males will form a wall of hide and horn to shield the young from harm. Modern Darguun goblinoids have managed to capture some of these more aggressive tribex and train them in the styles of old. Khorvaire has yet to see a massed unit of regimented hobgoblin cavalry on these creatures, but it may only be a matter of time.

As of the end of the Last War, war tribex are still rather rare and thus have a higher sale value than might otherwise be indicated by their capabilities. A fully trained war tribex can rarely be purchased for less than 600 gp.

I'll be honest and say I'm really not a number cruncher, so I don't have an opinion on the stats other than to say, "looks good", but ...

I love the flavor text! Well done, and tossing them in the plains as herd hunting was a good idea, this is a quality post and you should be proud.

I really enjoy the idea of the tribex as you've presented it. The flavor text is great and the stats seem well done. My only concern would be the Challenge Rating. Your standard tribex, stat-wise, is comparable to a Heavy Warhorse, which is a CR 2, so the tribex might be the same CR as well. The war tribex, being a fair bit stronger, would likely be a CR 3 itself.

But again, this is a great piece of work!

Thanks for the positive feedback!

My only concern would be the Challenge Rating.

I know... I'll readily admit estimating CR is not my strong suit. I was looking at them after I finished and looking at the warhorses... Aside from the HP, I felt the tribex would be a really weak CR 2. But your probably right.

Anyone else have a CR opinion?

I dont have my books here at work, but I would hasten to say that sticking with the overall stats and CR of a Bison is appropriate. I dont know what a Bison's CR is, but I am going to make a guess that its higher than 1. So my suggestioj is make a standard one the same CR as a bison, and then just use the War Creature template...in MM2 I believe, on top of that for the war-bred one.
Just my 2 coppers...

I have put some thought into this also, and have come torealize that the Dhakaani would have mostly used the Tribex as a chariot beast. Two Tribex could pull a heavy chariot into battle. Make that chariot big enough to sport a low tower that places the riders above the battle and you have an awsome command point. One hobgoblin leader, a Dur'kalaa buffing near by troops and ranged support troopers firing from above. These would be used at strategic points in the battle, plowing through enemy troops in their flanks and creating havoc amoungst them. I haven't got the time to stat this sort of thing out, but the idea is pretty deadly. ARmored tribex pulling large war wagons with a squad of goblinoids perched on it....

In MM2 the War Beast template adds +1 onto the base creature. Id guess its worth checking the template out and comparing the Tribex to a warhorse. Id personally think it would be the same or perhaps 1 higher due to the sheer bulk of a tribex being used for war.

Uprgaded the CRs by one. Tribex is now 2 and War Tribex is 3.
