Unbound Scroll Worth it Roleplaying and Power-wise? [Archive] - Wizards Community

Alright, in an upcoming campaign I'm going to play a gnome wizard from House Sivis who studied at the Twelve but adventures since, as he figures, he can go to the Twelve's library any time but those rare and powerful spells or items need to be attained now before others get them or he gets too old for this stuff.

I was looking through books for neat spells to start him off with, and I noticed the Unbound Scroll PrC in Dragonmarked. It seemed up my character concept's alley: a Sivis wizard fixated on collecting knowledge and using that knowledge both to attain goals and amuse himself (adventuring is a kind of game).

But is the PrC actually worth it? Or could I do the same thing but better by just buying more scrolls?

If you are set on wizard I would say 50/50. It has some ok powers but lets face it unless you plan to using tons of scrolls, then it is mostly roleplay flavor. I would look at the Artificer for this prestige class. They can act a wizard of the party just a scroll casting wizard. Sure your burning your craft pool and XP on scroll but you also get the other powers of the artificer class. Starting with a better hitdie and better skill points and skill list. Trapfinging is always useful to the party even if you have a rogue or scout. Not all the infuesions have a longer casting time look them over to see if there are spells there you like. You can also get second level spells at first level.

The favored in house feat is somethng to look at too. I like the charton pg73 of Dragonmarked that goes with it. Free scrolls every once in awhile is a nice thing.

Rules to remember about scrolls
6 spells on a single scroll
You can craft scroll up 1000gp value a day but that does not mean only one spell on the scroll.

Skills to take 5 ranks in as an artificer for Synergies
Decipher Script
Knowledge Arcane
Spellcraft
Use Magic Devise

Feat
1)Least Dragonmark
3)Favored in House
5)Extraordinary Artisan (Take this feat many times.)
6)Something like craft wand, quick draw or attune magic item

I guess I should mention that I'm set on wizard, since I love the idea of finding new scrolls.

Why can't artificers find new scrolls. they have mademagic it self in to a science out of it. Cannith artificers try and get their hands on anything new or old just to study it and learn it's secerts. Wizards study under other wizard to learn their spell. Sure maybe one once in a while find something forgoted in an old book. The library is where they spend most of their time looking over forgoted tomes. Remember what Jones the goblin 90% of awizards time is spent in the library and X never marks the spot.

Yeah, but I mostly like the idea of finding new scrolls because I then get to scribe them into my book.

Let's put it this way: imagining both being a wizard and an artificer, I see my as having more fun playing a wizard.

The unbound scroll is mostly about a casters that use scrolls. The question then becomes do you see your a wizard who relies on scrolls more heavily then other magic items? If so then yes the unbound scroll is for you. If not I say there are at least a few other gnome prestige class out there for you.

Prestige Classes that maybe go well with the Unbound Scroll.
Master Specialist pg70 CM
Shadowcraft Mage pg120 RoS
Geometer pg39 CA
Mage of the Arcane Order pg48 CA

What school are you thinking about specializing in?

This may sound silly but ever considered Loremaster from the DMG? That may be suitable or it may not, have a look anyway.

The only thing that sounds silly is that I hadn't thought of it before. Thanks!

Side thought that came while reading this thread.

I would find a rivalry between an Unbound Scroll and a Cannith Wand Adept amusing.

What are scrolls good for?

they cost more per spell then wands, using them provokes attacks of opportunity unlike wands.

What they are good at is the greatest treasure a Spell Caster can have. A scroll case with a scroll for every occaision. Even with the extra rings slot and all four rings of wizardry, you can't memorize every spell you could possibly need.

Almost half the PHB is choked with spells most people never use simply because they are specific. But in those specific moments they are the most powerful spells in the game.

Lets start the list shall we?

1st level

Alarm
Endure Elements (Who didn't open a door to find a veritable blast furnace and wish they had this spell?)
Hold Portal
Mount
Unseen Servant
Comprehend Languages (Everyone wishes they for this spell and they never ever have it)
Detect Secret Doors
Tensers Floating Disk
Disguise Self
Nystul's Magic Aura (Who ever really plans to use this spell?)
Ventriliquism
Erase
Jump
Reduce Person

2nd
Obscure Object
Glitterdust
Locate Object
See Invisability
Shatter
Misdirection
Blindness/Deafness
Knock (The uberest spell, but who wouldn't rather memorize Scorching Ray or Mirror Image?)
Rope Trick

3rd
Nondetection
Sepia Snake Sigil
Clairauience/Clairvoyance
Tongues
Suggestion
Leomunds Tiny Hut
Illusory Script
Invisibility Sphere (I've really never seen it cast)
Gentle Repose
Water Breathing (I've never seen it cast without the party Druid taking a day off to memorize it)

The list of simple utilitarian spells just keeps going.

You don't want to memorize them, but you do want them on hand. On hand in scroll form and crammed into your Waterproof/Fire Retardent/Fire Trapped scroll case is the simplest way to have perfect spell flexability.

So why not get the ability reuse your low level scrolls? Why not get the Ability to make them oh so cheaply?

You could even sucker your DM into letting you buy "Magical Inks" Patent Pending so you can craft scrolls on the road.

Endure Elements (Who didn't open a door to find a veritable blast furnace and wish they had this spell?)Just for the record, my last Artificer got herself a minor schema of this when she went to Xen'Drik. Hot humid jungles? Nah, walk in a park when you've got that bad boy hanging off your belt! :D

Sivis Gnome Beguiler/Unbound Scroll should be loads of fun. Too bad you have to buy scribe scroll.
