I what are your opinions on the Warforged Artificer Substitution levels from Races of Eberron?

I'm thinking for a meleeificer mostly, but any opinions would be helpful.

i especially like the 4th lvl ability "tools of war", you get x2 XP when enhancing, magic armor, shield, weapon, constructs or yourself & that stacks w/ the extraordinary artisan feats
yes you do lose the craft homunculos ability, but if you are wanting to make golems & such, your gonna have to get the craft construct feat anyways, as the homunculos ability doesnt cover that.
so in my opionin, its a really good trade off
i dont particulary care for the craft weapon familiar ability trade off, as you lose retain essence, the weapon familiar ability is kewl, but i dont like what you have to give up to get it.
but thats my 02 cents worth

oh yeah I don't like that one either and I like what you said about crafting constructs.

Isn't there a feat that allows you to make homoculi?

I belive that craft construct allows you to craft homunculi.

The weapon familiar is pretty good for a feat. You basically get alertness, +3 UMD, +2 REF (if you say use a morningstar) and a intelligent weapon that can see in the dark and speak to you and others. But as you say you loose retain essence. It is a hard choice in my book. With retain essence, tools of war and some artisan feats you can pump out magical arms/armour for your group like there is no tomorrow.

I somewhat prefer having my small arsenal of non-combat homunculi - a dedicated wright, a expeditious messenger and a luggage.

Well, all I have is the messenger. Funny story - our shifter barbarian never bought ID papers. Also didn't tell us he didn't buy his ID papers. Paying bribes can be a pain.

craft construct is what you use to make homunculous's

if your gonna be a forged & an item creating artificer, then personally i cant see any way NOT to take tools of war

I believe it was right after we caught the not-a-vampire and got our reward money.

No one in our group had Knowledge (religion)...

I think that taking all the warforged sub-levels are awesome. Have a lok at this combo if you are interested in a Forged Meleeficer. I'm currently playing this character.

I have a question about the Craft Homunculus class feature. It talks about upgrading existing Homunculus hit dice, can this be done with the regular Craft Construct feat? Create a 2 hit die to start with and later upgrade as the funds come in. That question is one reason I hesitate to take the Artificer Sub level at 4th level.

Thanks

I have wondered this myself at times, if I remember right read it as saying that an artificer with craft humunculus could do that, but I would definitely house rule that craft construct would do the same thing.

I guess I will have to check with my DM, we are usually pretty free about upgrading magic items, so I don't see why he wouldn't allow it. Just looking for any official rules regarding the issue.
