I am creating a Hexblade NPC for my game who is service to the Lord of Blades. When statting him out, I realized that I wa having trouble choosing a familia for him. For some reason I just couldn't think that someone who hates the "fleshed" races would carry a kitten arround with him.

Any ideas on what I could use as an alternate? I was thinking maybe one of the Artificer Homonculi, seeing as they each get them at the same level. WOuld this be tooo imbalancing? I want this guy to be a recurring villian so I want to keep hisabilities in check with the rest of th party

He's an NPC so you don't need to follow the rules. I'd give him a homunculi. Rather have him a little too hard than a little too easy if he's going to be a recurring villain (also villains should always get something cool or special powers-wise).

Give him a guardian familiar from Complete Warrior.

Somewhere there are rules for Weapon Familiars.
Your weapon gains a personality like an intellegent magic item, and gains familiar bonuses.

What better familiar for a follower of the lord of blades than a sword?

Or you could just take Improved Familiar, which lists homunculi as being a valid familiar choice...

Yeah, but the guardian familiars are so much cooler and count as improved familiars. :D

You know, there are construct familiars stated out in one of the Dragons from awhile back.

Using the Improved Familiar feat you could just give any animal the construct template and you got yourself the mechanical version of the beastie in question.

YOu could just give the guy a warforged version of a regular familiar. I mean, in my games I have it where the LoBster has taken control of a few creation forges and is experimenting with some crazy new techniques for making warforged(Like Harmattan from Kieth's novels). It would be too much of a stretch to say that his faithful follower has been granted a familiar that is worthy of the master race.

just give the thing the same basic stats as the normal familiar but with warforged traits. Plus that would make it extra cool for the group to deal with. Play it up a little. If there is a bard in the group let him/her do a bardic knowledge check to discover that this familiar is something that should not exist really.

There's also the Dark Companion from PH2, or just not taking a familiar. :)

I'd give him an undead "flesh stiched" familiar, just for the crazy anti-life flavor.

Off topic: I thought that the warforged wizard's familiar in ECS -- the coatimundi or whatever -- was rather cute, and I'm bitter about the fact that they flaunt such a cute familiar in the art and then don't give you any stats for it so that you can use it for your character without tedious houseruling or "it looks like that, but we're actually using weasel stats" type stuff.
