What would be some good ways of integrating the warlock class in Eberron? I've thought of the Daelkyr, the Lords of Dust etc. but I'm hard pressed to think of "good" or at least non-malefic sources of eldritch power.

Also, would a Warforged Warlock be conceivable?

The easiest I've seen is that the warlock is a survivor of the Day of Mourning. The effect of being in/near the event caused a lingering touch/taint on their soul leading to the warlock power. Which also works for a 'forged character.

There are a lot of ways to source power in Eberron. The easiest is a Aberrant Dragonmark. You could get the power from the Shadow (Dark Six). Maybe contact with a Radiant Idol (Sharn:CoT).

Or you can break with the fluff and source the power from the good guys. Aureon. Silver Flame. Deathless. Couatls. Contact with a manifest zone or the Mournland, or even better, a manifest zone inside the Mournland.

There's really no shortage.

well i could break the fluff and do anything.

but i'm very reluctant to. fluff is one of things that makes a class and a setting what it is.

i like the idea of an aberrant dragonmark, the problem is that it already exists as a feat with very clearly-spelled out benefits.

well thanks for the ideas anyway, keep em coming!

Well, one of the traits of an aberrant mark is that it's unpredictable - it was already hinted that there may be a Khyber-level mark somewhen.

I disagree. In my opinion, it's completely acceptable to take the mechanics of something, and refluff it. Say you have the archetype of the desperado - the one who has lost everything and doesn't really care anymore. I'd say this guy can be represented by the barbarian class really well: The fort save, D12 hp and damage reduction stem from the fact that he has learned to stop listening to his own body telling him to slow down and the rage would manifest as a rather "cold wrath" type. It's a barbarian in all but fluff - and I believe it to be pretty cool that way.

Likewise, there's that Rimefire Witch prestige class in Frostburn. I found the concept behind it pretty cool - someone who receives powers from a dying goddess and tries to defend it - but disliked the execution, so I just reflavored the warlock to fit it, since the class based on an ability that is very nearly the warlock's Eldritch Blast anyway.

I could imagine a fey-themed warlock as well.

Another option for the Warlock is to say that he was born/conceived into a manifest zone/when a plane was coterminus or both.

Oh man, I just thought up a warlock Zealot of the Silver flame from reading this. Imagine it, A CG warlock who's eldritch blast is a shimmering silver!(It already looks flamey)

Well, the "standard" Eberron warlock drains powers from the rakshasa rajahs trapped in khyber. But in the specific case of the warlock I don't really know how can you people change its flavor without changing its mechanism. The warlock's powers are incredibly dark, so the incantations should be very much changed.
I would rather have a good warlock in eberron who drains its powers from the rajahs, after all, alingment is unpredictable in this setting.

Then, of course, there are fey sources, which are just as viable in Eberron as in standard D&D. Maybe one parent was a Greensinger druid, and one parent was fey. Or maybe conception, birth, or whatever happened in a Thelanis manifest zone.

I wonder how exactly warlocks get their powers, be it from Fey or Fiend. Is it just a matter of blood? If so, how much otherworldly ancestry does it take to grant such powers? Or do the powers inherent in that otherworldy heritage need to be awakened somehow? And how about 1st generation warlocks, as it were?

I somehow like the idea of a warlock who gets his power from Daelkyr blood. :)

Any other ideas on how a warforged might become a warlock apart from some kind of magical weirdness resulting from the Mourning?

The same way Sorcerers get their powers from dragon blood. As for the Warforged why not have Warlocks when you have Wizards? But perhaps for flavor they could be experiments by Merrix, Warforged that have come in contact with a Xen'Drik componet, or a new experimental model that brings the Warforged endurance to a new level.

Well warforged can be wizards no problem, cos wizardry is a "learned" art, one which stems from study. Warlockery though seems to be something based on blood and ancestry. Which warforged don't have.

Which does beg the question as to how warforged can be sorcerers too... I guess if they can be sorcerers, they can be warlocks too. I just find it a little... strained.

I think the pact with the demon has less to do with blood and more to do with the soul. I know someone mentioned that warforged could be quori spirits that are recycled, and caught between the planes, or something like that. So if it makes the deal once... the warforged born of the same quori spirit would also recieve warlock powers. IE, how they are born warlocks. This is all assuming you go with the first part of course.

Sorcerer's I'm at a loss on though.

Actually, in the Eberron Campaign Setting, in chapter 2, sorcerers are described as not claiming that their powers come from having the blood of dragons, but rather from the dragons that make up the world itself (Syberis, Eberron, and Khyber.) Sorcerers, as such, have a more mystical than scientific (to use the terms rather loosely) source of power in Eberron. Drawing upon this, it wouldn't be too hard to expand this to the warlock, saying that the warlock draws upon the raw magical nature of Eberron itself in an even more purified form than the sorcerer. Of course, the manifest zone idea is also very good, but in the end, it's up to you. You have a lot of ideas in this thread alone that are useable.

Oh, and Warforged Warlock = Megaman FTW!!! :D

IMC, I sort of toned down the 'blood power' of sorcerers and given that to warlocks. IIRC, in the ECS they talk about how the sorcerer actually draws his/her powers from the world and environment itself through intuition. Draconic, Celestial & Infernal Heritage feats? Well obviously they're drawing dragonic power...from one of the 'big three.' This is strengthened in part by the fact that the sorcerer, as per core, still needs to lug around a pouch full of spell components, something no blood-magic user would need to bother with.

Warlocks, on the other hand...the power comes from within, be it from breeding, creation (in the case of warforged or hapless victims of wizard experimentation), an aberrant dragonmark, or coming into contact with some sort of bizarre magical essence (such as the Mournland, the Silver Flame, or the Umbra). In fact, I'd go so far as to say that those with typical dragonmarks are probably sorcerers, while aberrants are more often warlocks.

While we're on the topic, I've become stuck on the idea of hexblades being the desperate guys who make deadly pacts, or foxhole conversions, with rajahs (who pretend to be the Mockery or the Shadow). Throw in the 'Dark Companion' variant for a helper/watchdog, as well as even closer association with the Shadow...

Warlocks needn't have fiendish or fey ancestry. They can also make a personal deal with a fiend or somesuch, much like a blackguard's contact with a fiend.

Maybe Warforged warlocks are built with an Eberron shard that gives them some form of limitless magic on the same principle as an eternal wand, or possibly they have some sort of bound elemental built in with a khyber shard that powers them, but the elemental's temperamental nature also tends to make the warforged somewhat unstable (explaining warlocks' sometimes antisocial tendencies). They could be an early attempt by House Cannith to create magical ranged troops, but warforged warlocks proved rather unreliable (tendency toward chaotic and/or evil alignment), so they were eventually discontinued.

Which powers are you thinking to? from what I can remember the only warlock power that I'd consider really dark is the one that let you animate dead*, for all the other you can simply change the fluff to make them "good aligned" or at least not evil.

* and a good aligned warlock simply would not pick that power.

Well there’s a massive list of influences that a warlock can draw on
* The Mourning (the warlock in my current campaign draws her power from the mourning, which killed her big brother. All her visible powers are mist flavoured (ie fly has a trail/bed of mist transporting her)
* Khyber in general. The dragon below is pretty mean all on its own. And then there’s its current tenants…
* Rajahs
* Daelkyr
* Aberrant Dragonmark (sure it has its own church, but the taint of the dragon below that is the Aberrant ‘mark fuels the characters eldritch power.

Also there are the good influences
* Silver Flame
* Dragon Above
* True Dragonmark (why not?)
* Sov Host/Aueron (as mentioned above)

There’s loads of ideas that are both relevant, flavourful and interesting.

I couldn’t disagree more. The fluff that a class uses can be changed, reinterpreted and so forth.

In Eberron I find the idea of a Dragon Shaman jarring. However you could re-jig the fluff and base the powers around the character having a dragonmark. or perhaps they were born into the tribes of Argonnessen?

Eberron, with its shades of grey alignment/morals emphasis means you can tinker with all that fluff and reshape the class into something you find enjoyable and valid.

i like the idea of an aberrant dragonmark, the problem is that it already exists as a feat with very clearly-spelled out benefits.
As I said above, use the mechanics & fluff of the aberrant dragonmark to help explain the presences of those dark and dangerous powers…

The aberrants were feared for a reason you know ;)

WF warlocks are pretty easy: Cannith still doesn't understand their creation process entirely and wanted to see what happened when one dumps a Khyber shard with something bound to it into the creation forge.

As a thought exercise, I've refluffed the least invocations to silver flame:
Baleful Utterance -> Shattering Word (For nothing shall stand in the path of the righteous man)
Beguiling Influence -> Charm of Tira Miron (And speak to the heathens so they recognize the glory of the flame)
Breath of the Night&Darkness -> Silvery fog (Fear not, for the Flame itself shall be your shelter)
Dark One's Own Luck&Entropic Warding&Misasmic Cloud -> Protection of the Flame (The Flame will not let its champions come to harm)
Devils's Sight&See the Unseen -> Light of the Flame (And in times of Darkness, the Flame will be there to guide you)
Earthen Grasp -> Halt the coward's flight (None shall escape the wrath of the Flame)
Frightful Blast -> Glory of the Flame (And the unworthy will cower before the might of the Flame)
Leaps and Bounds -> stays the same
Sickening Blast -> Inner Wickedness (And those who are not of pure heart shall see their wretchedness and become disgusted of what they are)
Spiderwalk -> stays the same
Summon Swarm -> stays the same

well in one campine i actuly played a WF warlock it was not eberon but still it worked well. any of the reasons listed thuse fare can work. the reason in mine was becuse of adding a part (some sort of remain from a fallen creature) generaly asociated with warlocks or thare alinement, like a demons heart or a fays eye some thing like that. the premmess is the force that lets the wf be animated was fead threw the part and tharefore added the power .

I once concieved, and briefly played, a character who was a victim of elastic time and ended up developing warlock powers.

Similar to this Sharn Inquisitive Article (http://www.wizards.com/default.asp?x=dnd/ebsi/20070101a), only he was a victim in another way. He was a young man (just under adulthood) d'marked Denieth about to go away for officer's training... he got lost in the woods near his parents estate, he went missing for a few days. Search parties were organized and he was eventually found, they knew it was him because of the dragonmark but he was clearly several years older. He had no memory of anything that happened since he left the house those few days ago.

Well clouds of suspicion were on him immediatly... this is a world of shapechangers afterall. When he tried to activate his dragonmark spell like abilities to prove who he was he also discovered other powers he now possessed. Invocations eldrict blast ect.

He was 'escorted' under heavy gaurd to The Twelve. Where they tried to discover what happened to him, and also to varify that it was actually him. The Twelve's libraries of course had information on people with similar powers who had sould their souls to the forces of Kyber and he was made a guest of the Twelve "Indefinatly" for a time. The Twelve's diviners concluded he was who he said he was, that he was not possessed, that he still had a soul, other answers were unfortunatly not forthcoming.

They determined after an investigation into the site he disappeared in that he likely crossed into Thelanis, the Fairy Court which would explain the elastic time and the memory loss, though the extreme difference in the passage of time between the two planes was unusual. They were unable to determine how he got his powers... but after several 'interviews' decided he was not an immediate threat and let the lords of Deneith decide what to do with him. They decided to cut him loose, not exorate him, just leave him be, keep an eye on him, see what happened.

For this character (whose name I wish I could remember), I had plans for when he leveled up not to learn new powers per-sae... but rather it be more like him remembering how to do things... accomanied by vauge memories of using the powers before.

What exactly happened to him in Thelanis I was leaving as a huge blank spot in a hope that the DM would pick it up and run with it. Did he do something that he was rewarded for, did he give something of value up, did he owe a debt? I knew I was leaving myself open for future hurt but I figured hey it might be interesting.

Sadly that campaign never made it past 4th level before the DM decided to shelve it. Oh well. Anyway that's how I worked a Warlock into Eberron.

Well warforged can be wizards no problem, cos wizardry is a "learned" art, one which stems from study. Warlockery though seems to be something based on blood and ancestry. Which warforged don't have.

A Warforged could be created from materials tainted by whatever force, perhaps mined from an area that was coterminous with another realm at some point, and had residual taint, or during it's creation, some sort of surge of energy relevant to the source of power could have happened.

"When I first opened my eyes, the war was still raging and I heard the dying trees and the screaming of those fey bound to perish with them. Something flowed into me in that second, and the wrights at the forge said that my eyes shone with greenish dancing motes of fire. I still feel them, swirling around inside of me, unable, or unwilling, to pass from this world. From their loss comes the eldritch fire, and I travel the world, seeking the lost grove. Perhaps it is my destiny to replant those trees. Perhaps they simply did not want to die forgotten and in vain, and knew that I would retain the memory of their loss forever. Perhaps it was just an accident, and their spirits flew by me on the way to their final reward, passing before my newly awakening eyes. Some say it is the ultimate irony that a lifeless thing burns with the green and golden flames of the dryads, but I think it is a sign that life overcomes all, and that I am not fated to be a lifeless 'thing,' the property of my makers, no matter my origin on the forge."

One possiblity for a "good" warlock would be the Draconic Prophecy itself. The Warlock could be drawing their power from it, while it obviously isn't good nothing about the prophecy stops the Warlock from being good aligned.

kinda like the dragonmarks themselves eh? that's an intriguing idea...
