What Forms can a Changeling Take? [Archive] - Wizards Community

09-07-07, 12:18 AM I know that a Changeling can take the form of anything vaguely humanoid, that's a given. But what about, say, a demon of some sort? It's an outsider, but can a Changeling take that form?

I've read the Alter Self spell description, but it doesn't really tell me.

Also, how many HD can the new form have? The spell changes maximum HD depending on the caster level, so what's a Changelings "Caster Level" for his transformations. Is it his HD?

09-07-07, 02:04 AM Well, for starters, the alter self spell states a limit: "maximum HD of an assumed form equal to your caster level, to a maximum of 5 HD at 5th level" as well as saying: "creature of the same type as your normal form".

So alter self does actually give you all the information you asked for. In the first three sentences of the spell description, no less.

But all of that is irrelevant!

The changeling's ability to take other forms is based on the disguise self spell, not alter self, as you seem to believe. The only difference is that the disguise is a physical one rather than an illusion, that changelings can disguise only themselves (not their clothing or equipment), and that the effect has a more lasting duration.

Disguise self also clearly answers your questions:

You make yourself—including clothing, armor, weapons, and equipment—look different. You can seem 1 foot shorter or taller, thin, fat, or in between. You cannot change your body type. Otherwise, the extent of the apparent change is up to you. You could add or obscure a minor feature or look like an entirely different person.

The spell does not provide the abilities or mannerisms of the chosen form, nor does it alter the perceived tactile (touch) or audible (sound) properties of you or your equipment.

If you use this spell to create a disguise, you get a +10 bonus on the Disguise check.
Don't forget the penalties to the Disguise check for changing race, sex, etc. And the caster level doesn't matter, as it doesn't affect anything.
