| Encard06-07-07, 11:19 PM | I've been looking around, but I can't seem to find the answer to the titular question - what does an artificer need, workshop- and equipment-wise, to craft magic items? Is there anything specified, or is nothing mentioned anywhere? One of my players wants to play an artificer to takes his workshop (and Dedicated Wright) with him in a Bag of Holding/Portable Hole, so we're trying to work out the size and cost constraints. Thanks! |

My group allows the lab in a portable hole. Though I would be inclined to say that a medium sized artificer couldn't actually work in it, though a dedicated wright could, and a table could be pulled out to created more space. ~Ukkic |

Thanks! The DMG has the rules on creating magical items. It says you need nothing but a quite place. SRD link (http://www.systemreferencedocuments.org/35/sovelior_sage/magicItemsCreation.html) The creator also needs a fairly quiet, comfortable, and well-lit place in which to work. Any place suitable for preparing spells is suitable for making items. The DMG may differ from the SRD here. |
| Edymnion06-08-07, 08:26 AM | That is in conflict though with another place that says you need a magical laboratory to craft magical items in. I can see any quiet place working for things like scrolls, but not anything more complicated than that. |
| Arryn06-08-07, 01:58 PM | I'm doing the same thing with a Bag of Holding, and have come across the same problem. The closest "statted" thing in the books to an Artificer's Workshop to me is the Alchemist's lab. I'm probably going to spend the gold and factor in the weight of that item, but fluff call it a workshop. Just a thought. |

In addition to the requirements I stated specific magical item TYPES MAY have additional requirements. The link I provided has specific additional requirements, like a heat source and the stuff you are assembling. Additionally you need; bottles and pots for potions, tools and equipment for wondrous items. But all that is in the link. |
