Where am I going wrong with the Humunculus? [Archive] - Wizards Community

06-06-07, 04:31 PM Please, somebody fill me in on something here. An Artificer gets the Craft Humunculus feat at fourth level. In order to create these weird and wonderful creatures, they have to emulate the necessary spell requirements. Arcane Eye is universal to all Humunculus types. However, even given the Artificer's +2 to level concerning spells able to be emulated, doesn't this leave them short a level? Arcane Eye is a 4th level spell. Wizards/Sorcerors can't cast 4th level spells until they are 7th level.

4th level Artificer + 2 level bonus to emulate spells = 6th level.

What am I missing? Seems a pretty lousy bonus to get at 4th level if you can't use it till 5th.

06-06-07, 07:58 PM You are correct, but most DMs houserule that Artificers can craft homis at 4th level without having to emulate Arcane Eye.

The scroll only costs 700gp. That's how I would go about it. If you build the right one, it should more than pay for it's self before the next level.

06-08-07, 09:18 PM Actually, I would count "Free Use of Minor Schema" as a legit use of Favored in House for House Cannith. Without that, I'd still give you a discount on essentially "renting" the minor schema for crafting your homunculus as long as you were a Cannith.

06-09-07, 04:38 PM Thanks, everyone who responded, I just wanted to make sure I wasn't missing something somewhere. I guess using a "house rule" as mentioned above or one of the other recommendations (all very good ones) is the only way out of it.
