| JulesCARV04-18-07, 06:20 AM | Why did they put an "any nongood" restriction on the Child of Khyber? It makes sense from a "high fantasy" perspective, but in Eberron, a guy cursed with unwanted dark powers who tries to fight for good while walking the edge of damnation and facing persecution from the authorities seems to be exactly the kind of "comic book gothic antihero" that is intended to go into an Eberron game. I realize that some are likely to find such a character trite, but for better or for worse, it's the kind of character that fits into the preestablished themes and tone of Eberron. Now, if a character and DM have a good relationship, it's likely that the DM will allow a good Child of Khyber if they can reasonably work something out, but in doing so, they're houseruling against the current rules. Why should that be necessary, when clearly a (struggling) good Child of Khyber fits into Eberron? Why not just say "most Children of Khyber have been evil, with some neutral exceptions. So far, none have been good" in the description, and then leaving it unrestricted, so that a PC can be the first good Child of Khyber (if he wants to be), making him a unique pulp hero? |
| ieattrollsforbreakfast04-18-07, 07:03 AM | I brought up the same point in the Dragonshard thread on General. I see no reason to have an alignment restriction either. I suspect it was added in by someone in editing who isn't as familiar with Eberron as the rest of us. That, or its saying that Khyber would never choose a good character as her progeny. |

Guilty as charged. Please Lord, save me from emo anti-heroes. Good warlocks, good assassins, the "my gift is my curse" people, all of 'em. Any character can fit into the tone of Eberron, IMO, murky alignment or otherwise. Invariably no matter how bright and shiny the setting, you'll eventually have to game with the guy that wants to play a brooder or the "lone wolf," because he's a brooder or a lone wolf in real life. All he'll do is assign his own, real-life emo personality to the numbers on his character sheet. It's been my experience that DMing that personality type tends to get troublesome after a while. That being said, I would tend to remove the alignment restriction because the Lady of the Plague has already been been established through lore from the Dmarked rulebook as fitting the sympathetic, tragic, "cursed with power" archaetype. For all we know, she could've been Neutral Good & her alignment wavered the more she used her mark. There's probably no real mechanical or fluff reason to put an alignment restriction on the CoK PrC. |

You just said it. Being an anti-hero means having at least some flaws. The alignments of Eberron are just defined differently: You can be evil and still don't have to massacre a village every second night. |
| Daydreamer04-18-07, 11:27 AM | i suspect the idea is that somehow they are 'chosen' for this. So if thats the case whatever intelligence, force, or instinct is behind these marks isnt choosing good champions. |

| Wymarc04-18-07, 02:59 PM | It is Draconic Prophesy that's appearing on your skin. A common theory is that abberent marks are corrupted by Kyber. |
| kaionon04-18-07, 03:32 PM | I do not really want to go fishing around, so could someone simply say which book the child of khyber is in? |
| Cifer04-18-07, 03:37 PM | None at all - it's in the latest dragon shard. Click on "articles" on the side bar and search for it. |
| kaionon04-18-07, 03:51 PM | Thank you. I feel sort of silly now that i've been comming to this site for about a year and I have not checked out the articals that much. |
| Vharuck04-18-07, 04:28 PM | You can try to help people and not be good. Take Dr. Gregory House from the TV show House. If I had to assign him an alignment, it would lawful (to the point of making a paladin look like an arsonist) neutral. He's a jerk and doesn't care about the patients' feelings, but still wants to help them physically. |
| ieattrollsforbreakfast04-18-07, 05:34 PM | Keith has given a pretty good answer to the question over on the Dragonshards thread in General. |
