| Evilmonster04-10-07, 01:35 AM | So, Xorat basicaly invaded Kyber, even if only when retreating from Eberron. Did the creatures of Kyber just welcome them with open arms? Or did the refugies from Xorat have to carve out a nitch for them selfs? I kind of have this idea that the invaders from Xorat weren't really evil at first. They were wholly alien and uncaring to be truly evil. They were more like children with a magnifying glass playing with an ant pile until they came into contact with Kyber. It wasn't until then that they learned how to hate. Anyway, what do you think? |
| goblin_pride04-10-07, 02:02 AM | That would actually be a good question. Were the Daelkyr the slighest bit malicious in their intentions to destroy Eberron or was it just them adapting the new world they found to suit their own needs? |
| Teron Gorefiend04-10-07, 02:18 AM | Natives of Xoriat like the Daelkyr aren't just regular creatures that happen to be mad and horrifying - they're embodiments of madness and horror. So, definitely evil. |
| Daydreamer04-10-07, 03:47 AM | I imagine that Khyber has massive power struggles and evil battleling evil. The Rajahs are down there, although bound. The daelkry are there, and so are the Yuan-ti, especially the yuan-ti that follow the coaults. There is also goblins, and some questions over medusas. Khyber is certainly highly up for grabs, i bet whole power structures and groups are battling it out beneath the surface. |
| Nived04-10-07, 03:53 AM | Another topic on this subject some time ago I made this annalogy. The Daelkyr planned on destroying Eberron and remaking it... the Rajahs on the other hand are from Eberron. So its like a home owner getting locked in the basement by their roommate then some random arsonist that planned on burning down the house getting locked down there too. I can't imagine they're the best of friends. |
| Amaril04-10-07, 10:13 AM | I would be greatly interested in a Khyber book. Maybe that's Hellcow's latest Top Secret Eberron Book. |
| korcheck04-10-07, 04:12 PM | There's a plot device for you right there perhaps one of them seems to be getting the upper hand and some epic lvl pc's need to go down and re-level the playing field a bit any number of groups would be interested in this endevor most importantly the dragons and the gatekeepers. as long as they are equal and fighting each ther they don't have the resourses to mount a full campaign against the "overworlders." and it might be harder for a group to level the field than to simply kill everything. |

(Fade in to twisted, mind-warping sounds and alien rhythms that Should Not Be, vaguely reminiscient of Brahm's Lullabye played by an infant's toy with very low batteries layered with the screaming of a thousand conscious human minds trapped in the bodies of worms on fishhooks... Various scenes flit by, all set in foreboding chasms devoid of natural light inhabited by all manner of fiends and focusing on a tentacled horror who occasionally gives the equivalent of a "thumbs up") (The tentacled horror turns to the camera and bows, then speaks Abyssal in a gutteral, gurgling accent) "Hello! I am Xorat, here in Khyber to learn more about ancient Demon race. Here with me is lovely Shanessa, kind of demon called 'Succubus'." (The scene expands to include Shanessa, a leering Succubus with flame-red hair and prominent, heaving bosoms barely contained by her black leather bodice. Shanessa looks suggestively at the camera, licking her pouting lips and revealing just a hint of her delicate fangs) Xorat: "Wowaweewoah! You have a nice, how you say..." (Xorat makes suggestive motions with his tentacles) Shanessa: "You like what you see, squid-boy?" Xorat: "Yes-yes, very nice, I like very much put my tentacle in your mouth." Shanessa: (Wiggling) "Oo!" Xorat: "How come you look so much better than other demon? Other demon all have fire and spikes and a very ugly face, they look just like my wife... Why you not like this?" Shanessa: "Well, big boy, we Succubi are the embodiment of destructive lust, so we can't be looking like that now, can we?" Xorat: "Yes-yes, I see... So, you are happy for lust, yes? You like to make lust with, for me?" Shanessa: (Winks) "Oh, right up front are we? I like that!" (Giggles) Xorat: "Yes, OK, I have good luck with you, no?" Shanessa: "Try me, honey!" Xorat: "Wowaweewoah! OK, very nice, I am so excite, I have been much time without eating brains!" Shanessa: (Concerned) "Umm, did you just say eating brains?" Xorat: (Tentacles twitching in excitement) "Yes, you are for the lust, yes? I am getting lucky soon, yes? I am eat the brain?" Shanessa: (A little skeeved out and worried) "Um, No, no, that's not... That's not how this works..." Xorat: "Yes-yes, you pretend you scared, like you gonna run away now, that make it very much fun for me..." (Xorat advances on Shanessa, looping his tentacles forward towards her braincase as his one yellow eye looks forward with the emotionless stare of a mollusc...) - Ron ^*^ |

| NthDegree25604-13-07, 01:46 AM | I'm a fan of the Quori and the Daelkyr and the Lords of the Dust all being vehemently opposed to each other, partly for one big reason: One of the conceits of Eberron is that there aren't many high-level allies, but plenty of high-level enemies. Now, if the Big Three Baddies are all allied, or even if two of them are together, that makes turning evil a much more attractive proposition for a party, because suddenly all of those high-level enemies are on your side vs. the leaders of the free nations of Khorvaire and all their 12th-level might. On the other hand, if the biggest evil power groups are opposed to one another, even allying yourself with one of them (and frankly, which one could you really ally with? Peon status is the best you could hope for) leaves you with a LOT of powerful enemies still remaining. It simultaneously keeps a good party from deciding "hey, we could switch our alignments to evil and rule the world with ease!", and keeps evil-aligned campaigns feasible, because you'll still have plenty of sources for BBEGs and all their powerful minions. So, from a playability/metagame perspective, I'd say the Daelkyr and the fiends of Khyber are none too happy with one another. :D Of course, there are plenty of in-character, in-game reasons to justify this, as well, but I thought I'd just chime in with a bit of a game design perspective, at least as I see things... Also, Werebat, NNNGAAHHH MY HEAD. Well played, well played... |

Chidlren with magnifying glasses aren't considered evil because their minds aren't yet capable of the higher thought processes that allow them to accept that other people and things in this world are conscious and have emotions, feelings, and pain. Like ants feel pain when they're burned alive. This excuse doesn't work well for the supergenius daelkyr. |
| SwarthmoreDB04-14-07, 01:15 AM | Please please PLEASE tell me this will allow us to spawn a Xorat: Cultural Learnings of Khorvaire for Make Benefit Glorious Plane of Xoriat thread! Your post, Werebat sir, is made of massive win and epic! |

Also, I don't have my ECS with me, but I'm certain that I read at some point - either in the ECS, or in the Ask Keith Baker FAQ - a statement that basically amounted to "the daelkyr are very experienced when it comes to destroying worlds." |
| korcheck04-14-07, 07:22 PM | I believe that the daelkyr are actually THE MOST sane entities around. They know exactly what they are doing and what it is they want. For now they choose to allow themselves to be locked away because it suits them. As for the demons well that also suits them they are just so many playthings waiting to be help along the path. I don't think they have any fear of the dreaming dark at all because quite frankly how can such a creature affect them? The daekyr are not here to destroy but to make it all better and once everyone and everything sees the true reality sanity will reign over all. We are mistaken in feeling that we should fight them this line of thought is only drawn from those who would seek to destroy the true reality if you give in and accept them then the daelkyr will waken you from the nightmare that is this false life.:D Come children rise above it all, follow me and mine, we will fix you.    :angelhide   :evillaugh |

I think that in this respect the Daelkyr could be viewed more like the mid-20th century scientists: they have no problem performing all sorts of experiences on 'inferior beings' just to see 'how it works' . |

| Drag0nUL04-16-07, 01:32 AM | Don't you mean Nazi scientists experimenting on prisoners? I was actually thinking about experimenting on animals. But this is a good example also. |
| goblin_pride04-16-07, 02:43 AM | I was actually thinking about experimenting on animals. But this is a good example also. No, it's not. The nazis committed their atrocities based on their belief that certain groups of people were inferior. The vivisection societies of the previous example would be more appropriate. People disecting animals willy-nilly in the name of scientific progress and as a social event would be more like the Daelkyr. A Daelkyr doesn't see you as a thinking creature, he sees you as a building block for his grand design. |

A Daelkyr doesn't see you as a thinking creature, he sees you as a building block for his grand design. Ya, that's sorta what I was thinking. They wern't Evil with the big "E" in any way a human could understand. They just don't see the creatures of Eberron as important enough to bother forming an ethics for, much less talking to or wondering if they even liked being mutated into bloodthirsty killing things of unimagionable horror. But after meeting Kyber they learned how to hate. |
| Daydreamer04-20-07, 01:18 AM | i see them as malign and evil, and perfectly aware of the depth of suffering they are causing. I suspect they wish they had even more intelligent and worthy individuals to make suffer. I see your interpretation, but from the various takes on daelklr ive seen, particularly in novels, they seem quite unambigiously evil. |
