I've got what I think is a decent idea for a Warforged Fighter/Swashbuckler (Fighter 2, Swashbuckler 4).

Anyone have suggestions about feat selections? Anything that pops into mind as a "must-have" for this type of character?

I'm not looking for exact specifics, but I am interested in ideas that may help me make my choices.

Thanks!

Well first of all drop the fighter and take rogue then get the feat daring outlaw it allows you to increase your sneak attack while advancing as a swashbuckler. Then I would say get Imp init.

Well, I'm pretty much set on the classes I want in order to reflect the background I have envisioned for the character. Thanks for your input, but I'm more interested in feat selection suggestions.

Then, Daring Warrior. Let's your Fighter and Swashbuckler stack for Grace and determining what fighter feats you qualify for. Try asking this in the Character Optimization forum?

What book is Daring Warrior in? (never mind, Complete Scoundrel, found it)

I thought about the CO boards, I tend to avoid them.

Maybe I'll give it a shot, though...

Well, there's the obvious:

Combat Expertise, (Disarm, Feint or Trip). Fencing and flashy swordplay are the stereotypical Swashbuckler stuff.

Imp Crit for your rapier?

Imp Init is always a favorite.

Although I personally would suggest Mithril Body, just for the armor.

Something else you might try is Weapon Finesing your natural attacks. Maybe your swashbuckler is more of a brawler than a rapier user? Focusing on some grappling or something where your guy has more wrestling type moves (throwing people overboard, etc.).

Perhaps it would be interesting not to focus on damage-dealing feats so much as disabling feats. Maybe your guy is the one tripping up and toying with the enemy while your mates skewer him with swords. Sucks not to be a heavy damage dealer, but nothing pisses off a DM more than rendering their NPCs helpless through feints, disarms and such.

Definitely take the mythril or ironwood armor feats. That extra AC rocks the hizzy.

OK, going with my concept I've decided on my preliminary feats:

1: Mithral Body (good suggestion!)
F1: Combat Expertise
F2: Dodge
3: Improved Feint
6: Mobility

Eventually, I'll take Mithral Fluidity to cut down the skill penalty and up the max DEX.

I've imagined him as a tumbling, feinting, dashing swordsman. I think I'll name him Fairbanks (after Douglas Fairbanks).

If you're looking into Complete Scoundrel, it wouldn't hurt to take a look at the skill tricks. Things like 'group fakeout' would work well with Improved Feint, plus I think its nice for flavor, pulling off such tricks and stunts.

That's a good one!

Upon further consideration, I may go with the following:

1: Mithral Body
F1: Combat Expertise
F2: Weapon Focus(Rapier)
3: Dodge
F4: Weapon Specialization(Rapier)
6: Combat Reflexes

That would change his level progression from my previously planned FTR 2/SWSH 4 to FTR 4/SWSH 2. But I think it works out a little better.

Einhander from PHBII is all about single handed weapon combat with no shield. Plus you get a lot of acrobatically inclined abilities.

And since you are going for a class with a high Int, I'd agree with the Combat Expertise tree and Improved Disarm.

Gear wise, I'd suggest the gems out of the Magic Item Compendium that let you score critical hits on otherwise immune creatures (undead, construct, etc) so you can maximize the "Insightful Strike" class ability.

That's part of my long term plan.

Ick. No offense, but I personally dislike the "socketed gems" part of the MiC. My DM agrees with me, so we tend to ignore the fact that they even exist.

:plotting: hmm... well it would be cool to be a warforged dread pirate from the principalities :duel: ... but you should take combat reflexes. me and my buds think its the black lotus for a rogue or high dex character. i assume you're using a high dex? the feat makes up since you probably won't take big dex screwing armor... i never was one for armor when a nice dex mod can boost ur skills and ref saves .

For some reason i had Dodge down twice on the feat build. I've changed it to Combat Reflexes, but I may change it to Improved Feint.

The build I'm currently going with has a 16 Dex.

From a pure optimization stand point, I have found that Improved Feint really starts to lose its punch down the road. First, if you don't plan on having sneak attack or suddent strike, it's not really worth it. Second, after 10th level you are going up against creatures with high natural armor (as opposed to high Dex scores) and very high BAB, which is added to the Sense Motive check that they make to resist your Bluff check.

I'm playing a rogue 5/swashbuckler5 and my improved feint was proven quite useless against a dragon with a CR of 13, despite having maxed out the skill and rolling 15+

And yes, I agree that gems are weenie. I was just throwing it out there.:D
