Pretty much just as the subject line asks -- is it possible for a docent to have class levels?

Also --

If the answer to the first question is "yes," would it make sense for a 'forged to take leadership, taking his docent as a cohort?

If so, is there a reasonable way to calculate cohort LA for a docent?

Yeah, mechanically the docent is just an intelligent magic item, like a sword. It doesn't get to take class levels, and it doesn't count as a "person" for things like Leadership. Anyway, why would you want to waste Leadership on a docent? You plug it in, it already does everything you tell it to.

Well, I was thinking that a warforged fighter (or somesuch) with an artificer docent cohort would be kinda neat. Just an idle thought of no real consequence.

I wonder how the docent will do its verbal and somatic components...

Maybe the docent is a wizard or sorcerer with the still spell feat?

IDEA! A weapon of legacy docent, it would gain powers as you level up.

Not so, actually. Like any intelligent item, Docents have ego scores. If they dont like whats going on, they can vie for control, be given control willingly by you, or presumably take over if you lose consciousness.
All of which make the levels question very reasonable.

Docents have no class levels, period. They can have abilities that mimic class levels, but such a docent should be considered artifect level and handled with care.
