| BrokenJade05-31-07, 03:15 PM | This question poped into my mind when i commented in the Guns, a stupid question thread. Anyways what are your ideas on the use of this supplement in the Ebberon setting here is a link to a summary of the supplement http://rpg.drivethrustuff.com/product_info.php?products_id=680 |
| Vharuck05-31-07, 04:21 PM | Possible, but I'm leery of the "technology." Technology really is just the application of what we can do to make our lives better, more enjoyable, or easier. Magic is technology in Eberron. Sure, you could spend a lot of money on gears, turbines, copper, and the harvesting and creation of a magnet, or you could use a much cheaper eternal lantern(short run cheaper, why invest in something with the hopes that one day a "breakthrough" will occur to make it actually an economically sound investment). But Eberron has a plane of chaos, Kythri, and some of that stuff sounds like the purview of madness and utterly alien horror (the daelkyr and Xoriat), so I don't think it'd be hard to introduce it. |
| tallric_kruush05-31-07, 05:10 PM | Chaositech was created as a counterpoint to technology in Monte Cooke's Ptolus setting, which has been around longer than 3rd Edition itself. Since Eberron doesn't feature true "technology", I'd be very leary of introducing Chaositech. I'm pretty familiar with the stuff. I own that supplement, and have played quite a bit in Ptolus. In my opinion, it doesn't fit Eberron well at all. It might appear feasible at a glance (with a Xoriat tie-in, for instance); but once you dig into Chaositech, you'll realize that it assumes a lot about the setting. It would take more work than you might realize to shoe-horn it into Eberron. You'd basically have to dispense with all the Chaositech "fluff", and try to invent a new explanation for the crunch. It's probably not worth it. |

| mhacdebhandia06-01-07, 07:59 PM | If I made use of the material in Chaositech in an Eberron campaign, I would probably connect it directly to the servants of the daelkyr and the invading forces of Xoriat. That is, you wouldn't see random cults of the Dragon Below using chaositech, but if the PCs came across a hoard of artifacts dating back to the original invasion, chaositech might be part of it - and if they ever delved into the deepest parts of Khyber and came face to face with direct servants of the daelkyr, they could be using the stuff. |
| tlarham06-02-07, 07:17 PM | I've currently implemented Chaositech into my Eberron campaign. I've written it in as the preferred "warping" tool of a Daelkyr Lord beneath the Mournland. The Daelkyr stand-in for the Galchut in this case. IMC, the glowing chasm is a sea of liquid chaos (from the supplement), that is being harvested from Khyber by the Daelkyr lord and his minions -- it has allowed chaositech to be "captured" by the rogue Hobgoblins from the Seven Caves (Red Hand of Doom), and have been enhancing the Red Hand Horde as they march on New Cyre. The PC's have already defeated a few foes, and gathered their chaositech, which they plan on selling to House Cannith -- which is exactly what the Daelkyr Lord wants (his servant is a House Cannith excoriate). Once House Cannith has the chaositech, the Dealkyr will use it as a conduit to take control of the house, and use them to build an eldrich machine to open a gate to Xoriat in the mournland. I have limited the chaositech elements that are too "scifi" for Eberron, like the ray guns and jet packs. But my Daelkyr Lord DOES wander Khyber in a Leviathin Chaositech Kraken that swims the deep subterranean seas, with all his servants piped into the walls of metal and flesh (like the matrix/bord). The high level elements of the campaign are going to focus on the PC's trying to undo the damage they did by trying to earn a few easy gold pieces. They're going to have to explain themselves to the Lord of Blades, who has taken-up a "holy war" against the Chaositech warriors in the Mournland, and the Lords of Dust, who view the Xoriat Gate as a threat to their eventual rise from Khyber. Rakshasa, "Yea...I'm evil...but -I- didn't hand the continent over to the realm of madness." Should end with a nice epic set-up against the Daelkyr/Galchut. -- Tallon |
| tallric_kruush06-02-07, 11:05 PM | I have limited the chaositech elements that are too "scifi" for Eberron, like the ray guns and jet packs. Yeah, that is a must. The problem I see with Chaositech is that it imitates technology. It's a foil to technology. Technology is something that has existed in Praemal (the world of Ptolus) for centuries, and is only in recent years on the decline. Technology has never existed in Eberron. Magic took it's place. So the "-tech" aspect of Chaositech is what makes it a tough fit. I definitely agree if anyone's going to do it, they'd have to tie it somehow to the Daelkyr. (Though the "energy" that powers it could just as reasonably be drawn from Kythri, as Vharuck mentioned). Also, as you've done, they'd definitely have to limit the stuff that completely diverges from Eberron's setting, such as the gun-like items. |
