I have a gnome artificer that wants to build a neat helmet that has three mounted goggles, so you can just raise one and spin it and lower another.

Could someone please explain to me how to combine these effects into a single item and cost it appropriately? What checks will I have to make when crafting this thing? Thanks!

Talp's Helmet includes the effects of:
- Headband of Intellect +2
- Goggles of Minute Seeing
- Cannith UMD from savevsdm.com (http://www.savevsdm.com/?q=node/48) (the read magic and detect magic effects would each have their own set of goggles)

Your help is vastly appreciated! Hopefully after I have this explained to me once I'll be able to figure out the other items myself.

Well you got four effects going for starters

lets start with the basics

Helmet of Intellect +2
2 X 2 X 1000 = 4000

Lens of Minute Seeing
Market Price compared = 1250

Lens of Detect Magic
0 level spell, 1st level casting, 1 minute per level duration
1 X .5 X 2000 X 2 = 2000

Lens of Read Magic
0 level spell, 1st level casting, 10 minutes per level duration
1 X .5 X 2000 X 1.5 = 1500

Now...

there's four effects so beyond the first effect which is the intellect each other ability is non-slotted so we have to increase the price of each by 50%

1250 X 1.5 = 1875
2000 X 1.5 = 3000
1500 X 1.5 = 2250

Base/Market Price
4000 + 1875 + 3000 + 2250 = 11,125 Base Price, 445 Xp Cost

Final
Material cost is always half the Base price so..

5,562.50 Gold, 445 Xp Cost to make.

So far i've got counted up "Four" use magic device checks for each effect on the item, and there might be more, but i'm at work and don't remember what the Item construction ability Artificers get exactly reads.

And that is just if you construct it by RAW, Your DM may want to increase the price on something like this becouse of how usefull of an item that is, or maybe even impose a seperate increase in some of the base prices becouse of the multiple effects you want on it. But its truely up to your DM.

Awesome! I really appreciate your help with the costing. What checks as an artificer would I be required to make?

My other question is, if the 3 effects (read magic, detect magic and prestidigitation) cost so much, how did savevsdm.com price the combined item at only 2.5k gp?

Well Im' not very familiar with that website but if you look at an item like Helm of Comp Lang and Read Magic

Comp Langu and Read Magic
Market Price 5200,

Comp Language 1st level, 10 minutes per Level Duration
1 X 1 X 2000 X 1.5=3000

Read Magic 0 level, 10 minutes per level duration
1 X .5 X 2000 X 1.5=1500

As a second Ability there's a additional price increase of 50% so
1500 X 1.5 = 2250

Total I came up with is 5250, Market Price 5200

So I'm 50 Gold off so my math isn't perfect, but you can see it comes pretty close.

It says in the DMG that any additional ability, Spell Like or so forth those are increased by 50% becouse there addtional abilities your getting that are slotless.

I think you are making a slight mistake. The helmet the OP is trying to build does not use 1 slot on the body (head) but two (head and eyes). So it would have only two unslotted abilities, not three.
Corrected math:

Helmet of Intellect +2
2 X 2 X 1000 = 4000

Lens of Minute Seeing (unslotted)
Market Price compared = 1250 X1.5=1875

Lens of Detect Magic
0 level spell, 1st level casting, 1 minute per level duration
1 X .5 X 2000 X 2 = 2000

Lens of Read Magic (unslotted)
0 level spell, 1st level casting, 10 minutes per level duration
1 X .5 X 2000 X 1.5 X 1.5 = 2250

Base/Market Price
4000 + 1875 + 2000 + 2250 = 10,125 Base Price, 405 Xp Cost

Manufacturing cost
5062.5 gp, 405 Xp

oh yeah that be right, Two affinity slots would be taken up so the lesser two abilities would be X 1.5 and the other two would be at normal. So I was close, just a little oversite.

I have a gnome artificer that wants to build a neat helmet that has three mounted goggles, so you can just raise one and spin it and lower another.
.

I think you all forgot this feature of the item. That means it doesn´t use all abilities at same time. The wearer can swap glasses and only uses the effects of one at same time. Then you dont have to multiply by 1.5, just add the price for swaping between magic items.

The prize would be:
cost of Headband of Intellect +2
+ cost of Goggles of Minute Seeing
+ cost of Cannith UMD
+ cost of ability of swaping.

But if intelect is permanent and independent of glasses multiply the most expensive of the items by 1.5.

Becose this items is just how if you had those 3 items in your bag except for you dont need to spend a move action to take them off/in from it. I think this item could swap them as a standar action.

In my criteria I would add 3000gp or 4000gp for this feature comparing other items like Evard's bag that avoid attacks of oportunity when take an item.

To know spells involved use the spells needed to make all three items and another one related to swaping.
