| Cambian0003-23-07, 01:51 PM | I was recently playing in a Star Wars game and had an epiphany. Mechanically, Star Wars is compatible with DnD. I started thinking: would it be possible to have a Jedi Lightsaber in Eberron?? Manufacturing a lightsaber requires a colored crystal and some technology so why cant you make an Eberron version with a dragonshard and some magic? It could function the same as any other magic weapon of its type (ie. bastard sword) requiring the Exotic WP feat to use one. It would simply be a cool bit of fluff for atmospher. That said, what would it take to make one in DnD? Im looking for what Craft Feats and spells to use so I could present it to my DM. Cheers Guys..... |
| Kamikaze Chicken03-23-07, 01:53 PM | brilliant energy bastard sword FTW? |
| Syltorian03-23-07, 02:26 PM | Brilliant Energy is the most logical way to replicate what a lightsabre looks like, and how effective it is against most things. Other ideas might include: An elemental based one by binding it to a Khyber Shard. I believe there was a Water Whip in Magic of Eberron. Something similar with lightning or fire could work, though it's not exactly the same as a lightsabre. More esoterically, it could be an artifact of the original 'House' Tarkanan, channelling elemental-based or damage-dealing aberrant dragonmarks. Otherwise, I would recommend you read these links, which are creating hilts to channel a soulknife through. Kalashtar and Inspired could well use them. http://boards1.wizards.com/wotc_archive/index.php/t-378078 http://boards1.wizards.com/showthread.php?t=385453 |

| Syltorian03-23-07, 03:17 PM | Technically, any race can use them. Of course. By "Kalashtar and Inspired could well use them" I meant "mindblade hilts could well be common amongst Kalashtar and Inspired", not that they would be exclusive to them. |
| Dragom03-23-07, 03:50 PM | The Druidic: Flame Blade spell. Wouldn't it be easier? |
| Cambian0003-23-07, 06:30 PM | I was mostly thinking something along the line of a disintegate spell bound into a crystal. You know how lightsabers can cut through anything?? Or maybe something similar to an extremely modified wall of force spell.. |
| Edymnion03-23-07, 06:54 PM | I was mostly thinking something along the line of a disintegate spell bound into a crystal. You know how lightsabers can cut through anything??Take a longsword. Make it out of adamantine. Describe it as being a glowy blade of light. Fini. Never let flavor text keep you from using workable mechanics. If you want a sword that cuts through anything, adamantine is what you want. Just describe it as looking like whatever the heck you want. |
| DragoonDarkfire03-23-07, 07:10 PM | Did I mention the new term given to Inspired soulknifes of particularly high skill? Darth is to be placed in front of their names. |
| Bluebrush03-23-07, 07:13 PM | A lightsabre? Sounds Vorpal to me. PSSHEEW! HMMMMMMMMMMMMM VOR-pal VORPAL HMMMMMMM |
| BoneLord_of_Skullthrone03-23-07, 09:17 PM | +1 Keen, Vorpal, Brilliant energy, Great cleave, Admantine Great sword with a special rule that it is to be treated as a light weapon. Say the "blade" dissapears into the hilt when it is "sheathed". Then have it deal some extra "force" damage. Obviously this is some kind of artifact, but where did it come from? Jedis, of course. ;):P |
| Creature_Mastermind03-23-07, 10:31 PM | seeing as i am a big fan of Star Wars and Eberron i like this idea thx Cambian00 |
| sooperspook03-23-07, 10:33 PM | Theres only one problem with the Brilliant Enegry weapon idea. BE weapons only affect living matter, it couldn't cut through doors, armour or even a spiders web. |
| ArcTan03-24-07, 03:09 AM | I was recently playing in a Star Wars game and had an epiphany. Mechanically, Star Wars is compatible with DnD. Not exactly. They're both built on a d20 skeleton, but tons of the assumptions are different. I started thinking: would it be possible to have a Jedi Lightsaber in Eberron?? Manufacturing a lightsaber requires a colored crystal and some technology so why cant you make an Eberron version with a dragonshard and some magic? It's not just a "colored crystal", it's a specific kind of crystal, that may or may not exist in Eberron at all. It could function the same as any other magic weapon of its type (ie. bastard sword) requiring the Exotic WP feat to use one. It would simply be a cool bit of fluff for atmospher. I don't think it's realistic to have something flavored as a lightsaber that still happens to work just like a regular bastard sword. That said, what would it take to make one in DnD? Im looking for what Craft Feats and spells to use so I could present it to my DM. The easiest way to do a lightsaber-like thing in D&D is to have a brilliant energy weapon. |
| ArcTan03-24-07, 03:10 AM | Theres only one problem with the Brilliant Enegry weapon idea. BE weapons only affect living matter, it couldn't cut through doors, armour or even a spiders web. So use the spell from Spell Compendium that turns your weapons brilliant energy but wears off. |
| ArcTan03-24-07, 03:11 AM | Or maybe something similar to an extremely modified wall of force spell.. Ah, you mean you're thinking of Mordenkainen's sword -- a lightsaber-like effect if I ever saw one. |
| Bodger03-24-07, 01:13 PM | Now I do not have a name for the class yet but suggestions will be concidered. Any where a "________ " is the name of the class should appear. I have worked on this new class and the lightsaber issue is handled within. I am not done but have most of the basics done. This is roughly a Psion monk Level Base Attack Fort Save Reflex Save Will Save 1 0 0 0 +2 2 +1 0 0 +3 3 +1 +1 +1 +3 4 +2 +1 +1 +4 5 +2 +1 +1 +4 6 +3 +2 +2 +5 7 +3 +2 +2 +5 8 +4 +2 +2 +6 9 +4 +3 +3 +6 10 +5 +3 +3 +7 11 +5 +3 +3 +7 12 +6/+1 +4 +4 +8 13 +6/+1 +4 +4 +8 14 +7/+2 +4 +4 +9 15 +7/+2 +5 +5 +9 16 +8/+3 +5 +5 +10 17 +8/+3 +5 +5 +10 18 +9/+4 +6 +6 +11 19 +9/+4 +6 +6 +11 20 +10/+5 +6 +6 +12 Abilities Manifest Blade At first level the __________ can manifest a blade thru his weapon. It creates a dim light/glow around the weapon. As long as the character has a focus. At Fifth level the ___________ can manifest the blade/area completely. Ceremony At first the ___________ can perform a Psi-Ceremony and imbue/merge the weapon focus with a like weapon (Swords with Botons*, double sword with double boton* etc…). This can be only done for a total of three weapons each needing a separate focus. Once in every ten days the person needs to put 2 psi points into the item (s) to keep them active. Also the items can not be sold, but can be given to Psi types as long as they expend the points to keep the item active. This does count to the __________ allotment of weapons. Finally if the weapon is separated / lost etc.. the weapons will split apart once the 10 day period has elapsed. At fifth level when the ______________ can manifest the complete blade, the ceremony can still imbue/merge the weapon in to the focus and every time the blade is manifested so does the other weapons abilities. (examples: If a sword is merged with a boton* it gains the strength and edge, if it is a +1 magical with d6 frost the boton* is now +1 with a d6 of frost damage etc…) The cost is 1/day per “+” of the item that gets merged with the focus minus the level of the merger (1 day x “+” of item - level) and can not be less than a day. It also costs 2 pinpoints per “+” of the item if this total exceeds the allotment of points for a day then this to can extend the ceremony by days ( 2 pinpoints x “+” equals total). Craft Boton* Each member of the class creates his weapon focus via carving, etching or sharpening. They can make as many as they want but can only perform the ceremony on three. Mindblade Augmentation At fifth they can now create the whole blade instead of outlining their weapon focus. Return Shot As per the Feat but requirements are not needed. The ________ uses their mind blade to deflect. Return Magical Shot Modification of Return Shot feat, This Feat lets the target redirect a magical missile either back at the sender or at another target. The ________ uses their mind blade to deflect magical effects that would hit a target not an area. (Searing ray vs. fireball). Bonus Points Wisdom bonus + level equal the points gained additionally per day. Note: the merging ceremony it to allow access to magical swords that would not normally be created for this new class. | Nundahl03-24-07, 01:20 PM | Well, it happens with every setting ... I'm going to kick myself for this but ... Warforged Vader? http://bp2.blogger.com/_fYpsA3iAQDU/Rf-N688qOCI/AAAAAAAAAEI/QojPmgiwKmM/s1600-h/LordVaderDesktop.jpg And other Steampunk (which is kinda Eberron) Star Wars http://ericpoulton.blogspot.com/search/label/steampunk%20star%20wars Enjoy. -Nundahl |
| Cambian0003-25-07, 12:58 AM | LOL!!!! Warforged Vadar... Thats the best thing Ive heard in a while..... Psionic Warforged with a lightsaber... That would be awesome... Maybe with a few levels of Warblade added in for good measure |
| Tome_Chandler03-25-07, 07:26 AM | That sounds pretty cool. So Vader is a Psiforged Soulknife/Warblade or something. There are already stats for Han Solo, and I think maybe Chewie. Someone could take these and make a game of "Star Wars in Eberron". It sounds like it could be fun. |
| Edymnion03-25-07, 12:30 PM | Or you know, hey, just flip open Starwars d20, take the stats for the lightsaber, and just use them in the normal game. Its all d20, it'll work just fine. |
| Ryoden_Anariavas03-26-07, 09:39 AM | Or you know, hey, just flip open Starwars d20, take the stats for the lightsaber, and just use them in the normal game. Its all d20, it'll work just fine. The OPer was asking how to make one in a magical setting using the item creation feats. |
| Cambian0003-27-07, 01:30 AM | The OPer was asking how to make one in a magical setting using the item creation feats. Quite Right........ Had a thought - maybe a Kyber Shard item that focuses and maintains a disentegrate spell in a stable, albeit short (sword sized), beam. The reduced damage between the standard disentegrate spell and the "saber" could be due to the extremely tight focusing of the spell and restraints on range...making a weapon that does damage as per any of the standar swords (whichever it was built to emulate), and bypass a certain a amount of hardness similar to the effects of adamantine. |
| Cambian0003-27-07, 01:35 AM | And the question still remains: What would the crafting requirements for such an item be while maintaing the "fluff/feel" of a Star Wars style lightsaber? |
| Ubermog03-28-07, 12:33 AM | <Deleted> |
| Ubermog03-28-07, 12:34 AM | Well, it happens with every setting ... I'm going to kick myself for this but ... Warforged Vader? http://bp2.blogger.com/_fYpsA3iAQDU/Rf-N688qOCI/AAAAAAAAAEI/QojPmgiwKmM/s1600-h/LordVaderDesktop.jpg I thought his name was the Lord Vader of Blades :) |
| Nundahl03-28-07, 10:47 AM | I thought his name was the Lord Vader of Blades Oh man, thank you for that. I must resist the temptation to introduce LoBster in that way. It's not going to be easy ... -Nundahl |
| DyloniusFunk03-31-07, 07:34 PM | Oh man, thank you for that. I must resist the temptation to introduce LoBster in that way. It's not going to be easy ... -Nundahl I allwasy think of General Grevious when i think of the Lobster. Maybe it's the scene in Clone Wars when he's fighting like 5 Jedi and has 4 lightsabers he's whirling around. |
| Kaodi03-31-07, 11:37 PM | Khyber Dragonshard + Fire Elemental + Wall of Force = Exotic One-Handed Finessable Weapon, Must Have +1 Or Higher Enhancement Bonus, Doing 1d6 Fire and 1d6 Force, 18-20/x2, Weapon Damage Multiplied Normally On A Critical (2d6 Fire + 2d6 Force + Et Cetera) |
| JiCi04-01-07, 08:10 AM | Lightsaber huh ? A mindblade would fit, but it doesn't easily pierce through objects and cannot burn through things. In short, no melee touch attacks or heat. A thing I have in mind is a continuous or at-will Khyber item with a bound fire elemental. Add for prerequisites either Flame Strike or Hellfire, make it a longsword that deals 2d6 points of damage, make it finessable, make it attack with melee touch attacks without Str modifiers, and you're done. |
| Roxlimn04-01-07, 01:30 PM | Base weapon: Adamantine Bastard Sword Item Creation Feat: Craft Arms and Armor Spell Required: Flame Blade Effect: 2d6 damage weapon. Don't add Str to attack damage, melee touch attack to hit. Ignores Hardness of any item that's less than 20. Not Finessable. |
| Kaodi04-01-07, 09:20 PM | How does the actual d20 Star Wars lightsaber function? |
| Sir Elton04-02-07, 12:42 AM | Brilliant Energy is the most logical way to replicate what a lightsabre looks like, and how effective it is against most things. OH, really? Beam Sword The beam sword is the Energy Age’s most potent melee weapon. A small metal handle generates a solid beam of plasma contained by a gravity-induced force field. Beam sword 2d8 19–20 Fire — Medium 1 lb. 17 — |
| Sir Elton04-02-07, 12:43 AM | How does the actual d20 Star Wars lightsaber function? Like a mindblade, only it does 2d6 damage and can bypass adamantium based armor (it can cut through anything). |
| Kaodi04-02-07, 11:09 AM | Then why not just use the Star Wars rules and create some mumbo jumbo explanation if you really want lightsabers in Eberron? That would be better than creating a lightsaber+, better in every way than the real thing. |
| Deekin04-02-07, 11:48 AM | Wand of Energy Admixtured (Electricity) Flame Blade. Does thr right amound of damage, and the right type. |
| DarkWarriorKarg04-02-07, 12:23 PM | magic item compendium has the force wand....:D |
| Sir Elton04-02-07, 12:34 PM | Fortunately, the Light Saber idea isn't copyrighted. :) |
| Cambian0004-04-07, 03:00 PM | Fortunately, the Light Saber idea isn't copyrighted. :) Quite right... thats why I thought about it.. I know that there are more potent magical weapon in D&D. I was just wanting something a bit different.. |
| Cromag04-05-07, 02:45 PM | Wand of flame blade would work fine. |
| JiCi04-05-07, 02:59 PM | except that you'll need a UMD check every time you would like to activate it... unless you're an artificer or a spellcaster. At best, a rod of Flame Blade could work, similar to the Rod of Lordly Might, since no check is required to use it. Just add Bind Elemental to the prerequisites and you're done. |
| Sithraldor04-14-07, 04:35 PM | What is you use this melee touch attack on hit. 1d6 fire +1d6 sonic damage, x2 crit, finessible, bypasses all harness 20 and below. |
| John Q. Mayhem04-17-07, 03:34 PM | Take a longsword. Make it out of adamantine. Describe it as being a glowy blade of light. Fini. Never let flavor text keep you from using workable mechanics. If you want a sword that cuts through anything, adamantine is what you want. Just describe it as looking like whatever the heck you want. Excellent idea! This is my philosophy, too; why bother making up new mechanics when you can just change the flavor of something else? |
