Interesting idea, but I have a question, a comment, and an observation along with my suggestions.

First off, why a gold mask? I would think that as a ranger specific item, it would be "less bling" and "more camo". If you stay with gold, I would state that it’s appearance is more like scorched gold or that aged bronze color – something dark that might not necessarily glimmer or flash in light.

As for my comment, it is actually technically incorrect to call the death mask symbol the holy symbol of the Undying Court. IIRC, it states that the deathmask symbol was really only for outsiders to associate with the Undying Court. For true worshippers of the UC, I do not think that they have a single unified holy symbol because each elf kind of worships their own ancestors and some racial heroes. I think it states all of this in the Players Guide to Eberron.

And for my observations, I do not think a summoning spell is really what would be needed for an item like this. I would have gone with undead bane weapon spell from the Spell Compendium or another. Also, I think triple the modifiers for having undead as a favored enemy might be too much. If the ranger selects undead each time (first favored then selecting it again at each 5th, 10th, 15, and 20th levels), we are talking about a really significant number - it would give such a character a +30 to related skill checks and damage rolls! Even double would be too much. I would make the bonus a hard number like an additional +2 to maybe a +4 for a greater version. Doing so might really reduce the price too and make it something more undead-slaying Aerenal elves would be able to afford. If you keep the price, maybe you would allow the wearer to cast undead bane weapon on his...hmmm...weapon for like the spell - though this would also mean you would have to adjust the creation requirements.

Anyway - I hope this helps!

Thanks for sharing.

it was based of of a Dragon mag Magic item by the name of the girdel of hate that is a belt that doubles you favored enemy bonus but against all of your favored enemys and also instanly cures any trophy you take from a favored enemy that you hang on the belt( ex a orc ranger FE(Elf) with the throphy hunter feat( Elf Head) can hang the head and it is now instanty peserved. But I wanted to make a limited verson yet more powerful version that would still look like a good PC would use it. If you want to look at it take a look through the link bellow. It only had racial or favored enemy bonus as a pre-req and a CL of 5 along with the usual feat to make it.

So I thought why not make a item for the Death Guards to make give them a really good edge. An then I though about that and altered the girdel into a mask and limited the effects to one favored enemy, gave it the pre-req's of a bane wep, with the worship req and the favored enemy undead as its pre-req's to try and balnce it out, so I boosted the CL to more than double, doubled the price and added the race, spell and classfeature pre-req's to make it more balanced.

Sorry about the discription prob I do not work with these guys much. The scorched gold does sound cool though.

Now that I got that out tell be do you have any new thoughts on the item now.

Actually, it only works against one favoured or racial enemy, chosen when the item is first donned, so it is already limited. Furthermore, the item, as you have it, is not particularly restricted: it would be if the bearer (rather than the creator) had to be a follower of the Undying Court, preferably even an elf or a deathless.

While I like your change to a death-mask (with the understanding that it is not a symbol of the Undying Court, but still a much-used accessory), I agree with Kalthandrix that tripling the bonus is too much, even if you restricted it so much that only one character out there could wear it. I love the Girdle of Hate for some of my rangers, but it is powerful, even if limited.

If you want to improve on the Girdle of Hate - and your concept to base a Death Guard item of it is very nice - perhaps consider letting the wearer add the improved bonus to his saves vs. undead; like the Unquenchable Flame of Life feat (FoE), or allow multi-classed cleric/rangers to add the bonus somewhere on turn checks.
